Wow, the Rhino armour looks really cool now that we get a better look at it.
the SF4 updates basically are the same as the Call of Duty formula. release a very similar game on a very similar engine and make some multiplayer/balance tweaks. Call of Duty brings in a new 5-7 hour campaign each year but that doesn’t apply to SF4.
they don’t rework every Call of Duty game from scratch, it’s no surprise that the CoD franchise has been running on a slightly modified version of the exact same engine since like the first Modern Warfare
also, don’t forget that CoD has really stagnated the FPS genre, so while it’s a good cash cow I’d argue that it hurts the gaming industry at large. fighting games are meant to be played and savored over more than just a year’s period, so even if it were possible to release a brand new SF game every 18 months with new game mechanics/characters/engine, I think it would hurt the scene… like, think about it; we’ve basically had tons of new FGs to choose from over the last 4 years, but only SF4 and Marvel have stuck for more than 6 months, because a) many people don’t want to relearn all their stuff and b) some of the new games haven’t hit it off with the community as expected. Brand new SF games that frequently wouldn’t be much different… some people would fall off just because of the sheer amount of learning they don’t want to do, and some of the games would feel rushed and probably suck, so they’d just die in 3 months anyway.
also, I think there are tons of really good new players to the scene, players like Jayce the Ace and Nuckledu are like 17 years old and are beating the world’s best players, and Capcom is doing more for the scene via tournaments than they’ve ever done in the past, so I think the scene is decently healthy?
wait what… why is it actually a mechanical rhino? that looked dumb lol
can’t top the cartoon of the guy rocking grey spandex with a rhino hood/horn
He’s a mech in the Ultimate universe, and apparently he’s only in the movie for a total of 4 minutes. Just setting up the Sinister Six movie.
Chris Cooper should make for an awesome Norman Osborne.
i agree it might be bad for the scene but im just speaking from a business standpoint. the scene doesnt make Capcom money. they straight out said that after the 25th Anniversary Tournament. thats the same reason IPL got rid of the FG division. its also another reason they may not make another season of ESGNTV.
CoD has a huge scene, much bigger than the FG scene. if i were in charge of Capcom, my main job would be to make muuunneeeeee.
from a fanbase point of view, youre absolutely right. every 2 years might be too soon but come on Capcom, every 10 years is farrrrr too long.
ESGNTV made no sense to begin with, "lets dump a bunch of money into something and hope it goes somewhere!"
Thats just dumb.
ESGN doing poorly in ratings doesn’t have much to do with SF4 not being popular as it does with them kinda mismanaging the whole thing. Not enough character variety, streaming mid-afternoon in America, lack of good commentary, etc.
If they streamed Topanga League for free at 9pm EST, I guarantee you everyone who cares about FGs would watch it. It’s the best players playing long sets with the most character diversity, with good commentators and the best rivalries.
ESGN did a lot of stupid things at first… but it definitely also has something to do with the popularity of FG’s. SF4 gets 1500 viewers… and when ESGN did Hearthstone they got 50,000 viewers. So I assume the game has something to do with it.
Screw the new generation. Capcom doesn’t have to do anything. The “new generation” is a bunch of retards raised on Angry Birds and COD who want their games to spoon-feed their victories to them. Capcom tried appealing to them and the result was the abomination we got with Vanilla SF4. Let them keep playing garbage.
Mature gamers don’t get anything out of these companies “appealing to a new generation”. If they do that we only get shitty watered-down games for children and stupid people. What we should want is for them to do the exact OPPOSITE of that.
apollo justice.
man that was like a mega disappointment.
i remember playing the 5th case on the original DS phoenix wright, and that it was basically a preview for what they would be doing with a PW game built specially for the DS. man i was so fucking hyped for that. that last case was one of the best ones in the whole series imo, so dark and twisted. The whole part with meekins and that video that you had to rewind through it to find the inconsistencies. a whole game of this? yes fucking please!
and then once id finished it i was pretty gobsmacked. again ive played through all the PW games at least twice now but i have never had the urge to revist that one. the last bit where you dont even destroy the guy with a final piece of super descisive evidence. you basically just press a “win” button and then its done.
it’s no surprise that hearthstone, an accessible card game with no lag issues that exists only online and is built off a multi-billion dollar IP, is more successful than SF with the online crowd, but my point is that Topanga League is the type of thing that SF4 players love to watch and ESGN isn’t quite there yet
I’m really not sure it would. I consider myself the LCD. I like explosions and boobies… and I really have no interest in listening to shouty Japanese commentary, and I find the personalities of the players boring. I assume a lot of stream monsters are like me… so I’m not entirely sure it would take off that well with Western audiences.
Anyone at tubby tonight?
I’m not talking about appealing to the LCD, just that… if you’re an SF4 player and you want to watch a SF4 stream with good SF4 players, Topanga League has consistently proven to be the highest quality gameplay. If you don’t want to watch these things then that’s fine, go watch something else, no SF4 stream will interest you then.
If you like explosions and boobies then a LoL/Hearthstone stream won’t get your blood pumping either
But you were talking about ratings so now I’m confused… Ignoring the LCD and having the attitude of “if you don’t like it go watch something else” seems like a poor way to get ratings?
you were comparing ESGN’s coverage of SF4 to ESGN’s coverage of Hearthstone, and I’m saying while SF4 will prob never be as successful in the streaming world as Hearthstone, ESGN can still improve their SF4 coverage so the numbers aren’t quite as low as they are now, one way to do it is to broadcast at a reasonable time for America, another way is to recruit the Topanga League talent
geeky note here, Unreal Engine 4 was released today. for $20/mo you get full source code access and stuff. apparently the new Blueprinting scripting language is so powerful you can make some crazy stuff without ever having to program. and of course, it is very pretty in motion
Could also get better commentators than Gootecks and Adam Sessler prime.
I also agree with Andrew at least as far as fighting games as spectator events.
You need to make it interesting to the non-initiated without compromising the quality of the event (yes it is possible) first and foremost.
Fighting game players are a laughably small subset of the gaming population, but giving these games wider exposure would be a great way to generate more interest.
As far as tweaking the games themselves I would take the exact opposite approach and only listen to the experts.
The new Duke Nukem game was a huge letdown… I think we all knew it would suck, but there was a glimmer of hope.
ME3 ending was pretty disappointing too.
Yeah… tasteless is pretty awful at SF commentary… in SC2 he kind of thrives off artosis’ which he can’t do with gootecks
