Calgary Thread 2014

very cool dev. model, will definitely help out a lot of indies get over their technical hurdles and make more varied experiences. combined with the oculus coming out soon-ish i expect to see a lot of really great little games in the next year or two.

didn’t think apollo justice was really that bad… it wasn’t as good as PW1 or 3 but I liked some of the DS stuff they did

biggest disappointment in recent memory for me was probably smash bros brawl’s gameplay (the graphics/music/etc were all great)

I tend to not play games unless I’m fairly sure I’ll like them though

the music was really good at least :stuck_out_tongue:

i agree the final case was a real letdown (they show you the psychelocks that phoenix can’t fuck with, then do nothing with it) but I thought the game was pretty alright overall. It did a pretty good job introducing the new characters into the series imo.

I think there’s still room for innovation, and not every single child has been reared playing CoD and AB. The camp arguing that we need to go backwards instead of forwards is always a losing one without much chance of ever succeeding, outside of a few ‘retro’ titles or whatever label they decide to slap on them. In terms of fighting games, I’m pretty sure it’s over. You’re going to get your few people who are interested in it whenever they walk by an arcade cab at their local movie theatre or whatever and that starts the spark, but of course that is less and less now. There’s far too little that’s appealing about fighting games outside competition. If you’re not seeking heavy competition (as that is what you will find), then they will almost instantly become alien and cryptic the second you head online and get your shit pushed in.

For me, moving forward with fighting games means supporting new projects that we’re fans of. That’s why I was so stoked about Yatagarasu for example, a 4:3, indie, fighting game with non-HD sprites that I can get behind. It’s not catering to anyone except for maybe fans of 3s/SNKlikes. It’s appealing to someone like me so of course I’ll go out there and support it. There are other people doing the same for skullgirls and whatever else they have noticed and support. This gen is going to be different because OUR say is actually making more of a difference compared to even 5 years ago, and it’s noticeable.

Now I’m not 100% advocating this format of progression, there’s been some greasy details behind the indie games that a lot of people don’t like talking about. I see this as progress for us getting the games we want though, in particular fighting games, because outside of a couple devs like french bread and the arcana team all we are gonna get is companies continuously pandering to the lowest common denominator, which I would argue is going backwards. There are a lot and I mean A LOT of easy to play games out there already (Breakers, WakuWaku, Gem fighter, Marvel series, and a large array of SNK fighters) that either weren’t overly successful or have an incredibly niche market. Another reason they weren’t as successful is that they end up having less replayability as there becomes less to discover and the games gets fleshed out way too fast.

My favorite fighting game is still Garou, and it nails it imo in terms of the whole easy to play/learn but there’s a shitload going on there to master as well. More games could really use a simple model like that, where depth becomes a matter of the player’s choice more so than the necessary steps to learn to play the game. That type of game should be what is presented to the new generation.

Oh thank god, I’ve been wanting to use this for my game

you mean your imaginary game? you havent even posted screenshots or anything. i call bullshit.

Haha I was going to post that sfxt was the biggest let down for me last year.

I should pay attention to time.

Therefore no bad games from last year! Everything performed to its expectations, At least, the ones I played.

biggest gaming letdown - every Battlefield game since 1942

or maybe just every game not called Mass Effect, Street Fighter, Forza or Marvel since Halo 3 came out back in 2007
I played barely 15 games last console generation

There is a bit of stuff, I have artwork and other assets, but it isn’t much because I’ve been learning to do nearly everything myself (composing, modelling, programming, drawing). Eventually I’m gonna hire more people to alleviate my workload, which is what I’ve been trying to save money for. I also plan on releasing a couple of much smaller games before this one.

That is assuming you care and you weren’t just trying to own me because you somehow got insulted by my reply to you.

Did you play 2142? Good god that game was amazing.

i am interested. im sure everyone else would love to see your work in progress. id support you man if you actually are pursuing it.

Just noticed the new Spidey trailer shows Doc Ock’s tentacles, and Vulture’s wings in Oscorp. So I guess we have Rhino, Electro, Vulture, and Doc Ock confirmed for the Sinister Six movie… and since Ravencroft is in the film I’m guessing Kraven or Chameleon will be there as well… And hopefully Shocker or Mysterio to round the six out ;). The director said his favourite villains are Kraven and Mysterio… so pretty likely, I guess.

Looks like I was too late in seeing this. i’m actually already at Tubbies rn

See you soon daniel

A dark souls knockoff, good stuff Capcom.

if it’s fun, who cares

I don’t think Capcom remembers how to make fun stuff. They’ve had what? 6 bombs in a row?
