On June 23, 2012 Darren Rainey, a 50-year-old mentally ill state prison inmate in Miami-Dade County, died after guards responded to his defecating in his cell by locking him into a 180-degree shower for two hours—at which point his skin was separating from his body . Local police, and the state, failed to properly investigate. The case was only brought to light in recent months by The Miami Herald. After two years, no one has been held criminally accountable, or even charged.
Darren was serving a two-year sentence for drug possession and housed in a psychiatric unit. After his death, guards forced another prisoner, Mark Joiner, to clean up the shower where Darren died, including chunks of skin.
Only the U.S. Department of Justice can properly investigate this terrible crime, and a broader culture of abuse in Florida’s prisons that has led to other unnecessary deaths, and which falls especially hard on the mentally ill.

Gator wasn’t on the menu but one did make an appearance inside a Wendy’s just east of Loxahatchee in Royal Palm Beach. And it wasn’t by choice.
A Jupiter man threw it through the restaurant’s drive-thru window, according to a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission incident report.
It happened in October but the suspect was just taken into custody by US Marshals.
FWC officials say 23-year-old Joshua James pulled up for his order and after a server handed over a drink and turned around James reached into the back of his truck and tossed the 3-and-a-half foot gator through the drive-thru window.
The incident report showed a picture of the gator inside the restaurant.
James faces charges of aggravated assault and unlawful possession and transportation of an alligator.
FWC says James admitted to picking up the gator on the side of Southern Boulevard and bringing it to the fast food restaurant.
The alligator was later released in a nearby canal.

The gator was probably supplies for the day, except some higher ups from Wendy’s must have been there and they couldn’t bring it in through the service entrance, so someone just thought “lets just toss it through the window and scare the non-Floridians out, then put it in the fridge afterwards”.

Speaking as a Floridian…REALLY?? When was the last time ANYONE in Florida saw a doctor who wasn’t white or east indian (never, in the case of my family, and we’ve gone to like 6 different doctor’s offices and the VA in the last 7 years alone due to changing healthcare plans and offices shutting down)? He never shoulda made it past the first day. I can believe nurse, but DOCTOR?? And the funny part: he looks like an old co-worker of mine from 5 years ago.

Malachi Love-Robinson, who officials say was known to unsuspecting patients as “Dr. Love,” turned himself in to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday on new fraud charges and appeared in court today. The 18-year-old is charged with five counts of fraud by using identification without consent and one count of larceny of more than $20,000.After his court appearance, his attorney Andrew Stein, cited the teen’s “entrepreneurial spirit” as a factor in the case.
“He has the entrepreneurial spirit of someone like a Donald Trump or Bill Gates,” Stein said in a video shared by a reporter for ABC’s affiliate WPBF. “I’ve never met somebody, and I’m much older obviously, who has such entrepreneurial spirit.” Love-Robinson was ordered to undergo a mental examination, according to ABC affiliate station WPBF-TV. Police reported in his notice to appear that these latest charges are connected to his earlier arrest for grand theft larceny because further investigation into the losses sustained by an 86-year-old woman whom he reportedly treated found that he had allegedly “criminally used” her checking account to make $34,504 in car and credit card payments.
