Boulder Punching 101 - Chris Redfield Thread The Director's cut

Well you can use darkhole to cover trish while he sets up a mine, so you kinda alternate between shooting with chris, and laying mines while being covered by darkhole and peakaboo respectively. I do think wesker might, fittingly enough, be a bad match up for chris. But check out the video thread, there is a match between sanfords chris and andres wesker, sanford was still rusty as hell but maybe u can learn a thing or two from it.

Yeah, I watched the video I think you’re talking about yesterday and I came away from it feeling that he didn’t have a real solid answer for Wesker either.

Found a useful combo with Wesker Samurai edge assist.

cr A, cr B, C, -> C (Stun Rod), S

after your opponent is launched up: B, B, C, S (try and delay the S a bit so chris has time to land)

after you land: Wesker Samurai edge assist, dash, <- H (flamethrower), cancel into sweep combo

It does right around 600,000 damage and can be done anywhere on the screen… not bad for only 1 meter of use and it isn’t too difficult to pull off. If you don’t want to burn any meter at all then when Wesker’s assist pops them off the ground RE-LAUNCH them with S the in the air do the same M, M, H, S in the air. If the 2nd time you send them into the corner go ahead and end it with a ->M or crouching towards diagonal H (the pistol shot… either version work)

There is also a way you can extend the combo slightly if you have Doom rocks to go along with Samurai edge. You also have to slam them down into the corner after the second set of M, M, H, S in the air, and Chris needs to land right next to them in the corner. It is a little less practical because of scaling but it just looks flashy and cool lol.

Right when you hit the ground call Doom rocks and follow up with the ->M or diagonal forward + H like before. The gun shot will continue to stun them long enough for Doom to get come in and juggle him with his rocks. While he is being juggled by doom you can either do flamethrower cancel into sweep combo for about 700,000 damage if I recall… or instead you can hit him with the magnum (You want to try to do this near the end of Doom’s assist) and relaunch them again and end with H, S… but I usually tend to end it with just S. This combo does around 525,000 for no meter… it is long and like I said not practical but it looks cool.

Any other ideas how maybe once you hit them with the magnum in the corner off of Doom’s assist I should try and follow up with

Well I think it was mostly due to both match-up inexperience and lack of experience with the character, if you watch the sets, he gets destroyed by nelson, does better against andre, and beats yipes and rahsaan and his keepaway was getting better with each game. Even in the match against andre, there were situations where he could have killed wesker or avoided getting opened up by wesker but he didn’t due to lack of experience.

@Carpark: That combo actually doesn’t look that difficult, and I am assuming that was a lvl 1 x-factor you used right? Btw you should upload those vids to youtube, the quality isn’t really that bad and the video thread is kinda dead at the moment anyway.

Do not cancel into Sweep Combo, waste of meter, try my combo, :d:+:l:,:d:+:m:,:h:,:f:+:h:, :l: BP>:l:>:m:>:h:, Magnum, Air Magnum, :f:+:h:, :s:, :m:, :m:, :h:, :s:, :a1: (Weskers Jaguar Kick, low shot also works, but Jaguar Kick is better for Chris):d:+:h:assist connects, Flamethrower does 554,500, this builds TWO bars.

Carpark, would your combo work if I used Spencer’s armor piercer (which causes wallbounce)?

I’m really having a tough time connecting the magnum > air magnum from midscreen. The first magnum hits them way too far for an air magnum to connect, even if I jump forward. Am I missing something here? If it’s not too much trouble a video would be nice.

The Sanford video made me cringe. sanford was so rusty and awful at the game omg.

Any good GTFO assists other than Haggar? Zoning in this game is fucking hard, at least with Chris, he has shit mobility, all his moves have terrible startup so good luck trying to land that no range slow c.L, it looks like every jab in the game beats it, he also has no antiair and seeing how half the cast have instant fullscreen supers, all they need is some lame guess to take back the damage you did by keeping them out.

Captain America is an asshole, you can’t do anything if he has meter since he can do charging star on reaction from any distance and make you bleed, and then you can’t do anything aftewrwards as he is already in, unless you have Haggar, you are screwed.

Any suggestions?

i think hsien ko’s dark force pendulum will be the best assist for chris

Morrigan, she has a good amount of invincibility. Not as much as haggar of course so you gotta know how you throw her out or you’ll get torn up. Plus she doubles as an AA, so your killing two birds with one stone by including her on your team.

Does Chris have any decent combos that he can do on his own? No assist, no xfactor, just Chris.

Check the past couple o pages, carpark posted a TON of combos. Plus check out the video thread there are some combos there as well.

Can safely call in an assist or go for an air throw attempt

a nice ground combo is: :l:.:m:.:h:,:f::h:,:l: Combo punch (do full followup) which causes a wall bounce which you can follow up with Magnum (if youre far away) or a launch (if youre close)

but in the corner, after any launch to knockdown combo (including the one above) he can then OTG with Air Magnum -> Ground Magnum -> H Boulder punch -> Level 3 for nice damage. Im sure you an cancel into Sweep combo after the ground magnum.

does anyone else end block string with the mine? whenever I see :f::h: blocked, just cancel it into the mine and its pretty much safe.

So far my “pattern” has been

-Machine gun at max range
-Around 2/3 distance throw out grenades
-Anywhere between 2/3 and 1/3 distance toss in some jump back/jump in/jump up shotguns, confirm into combo on hit - back up on block
-Once they get close contemplate switching out, calling in anti air/gtfo assists, or tossing out land mines
-If they toss out projectiles stuff it with magnum shots

Ending with the mine is actually marginally worse for you if they decide to block, mine is -7 frames on block whereas :f: :H: is -6.

Shotgun is +6 frames on block. Combination punch L is -2. I think his :h: is also around -1 or -2.

No invincibility on ANY assist except Haggar. Hsien-Ko has armor mode that should work. As far as using his :d:+:l:, I suggest you use it early, while buffering into :d:+:m: (it has surprising range). Chris’s Stun Rod while unsafe is hard to punish at proper ranges, however, you should also know the maximum range where you can launch them after it connects, because you can’t do it at max range.

If he does Charging Star he just wastes his meter, and he doesn’t build much. Anyway, jump/s.jump a lot, he can’t do much about it because you recover once you land/before he can punish.

Finally the combo requests, I’ll try/record them when I get home.
