Best Ultimate Tech Talk Hang Out Loud Edition season VI, RIP MarkMan's #BeardStache

Just curious about your opinions guys

I skipped this gen although i was tempted but i was satisfied with ps3 and had a huge library of games, still have a backlog that at current rate will last me through another generation

At no point was i tempted to upgrade until sf 30th anniversary collection came out.
But i still did not as i had most of the games individually from psn

Anyways i see a hype train building for next gen and fanboys arguing ps5 vs xsx and for the first time im not even remotely interested

The only thing im looking forward to is a killer arcade stick that will top the VLX diamond (did not happen this gen so did not buy any sticks)

Anyone looking forward to it? And how will you get time to play, a lot of you have so many supercharged retro systems, will you utilise them all and a new gen console and feel like you got value for money?

I have what’s left of this guy that was being used as a change jar coming in.

Hope shipping wasn’t too much for you. It was $80 for me so I passed.

I think I modded two of theses sticks, one I turned into a Twin Stick for Virtual on, the other is my “SNES” stick.

I’ve been a day 1 adopter of consoles/portables since… the GBA SP.
So GBA SP, DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL, 3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS XL, PSP-1000/2000/3000/Go, Vita, Wii, Wii-U, Switch, PS3, PS4, X360, XBO.

I usually jump on getting the new consoles because there’s inevitably games that I want to play, despite having a backlog on older platforms to no tomorrow.

However, I’m a bit torn about the next generation of consoles.
On the one hand I know there for sure will be exclusives that I’ll need to get them for. Which is really the driving factor here.
Since day 1, my XBO hasn’t gotten the use it should’ve considering the price I paid at launch. It’s been just about exclusively my Halo and Gears machine, and only for their campaign modes. But I’ve been playing those series as a group with my brother and some friends for years now, so it’s not like I had any other real option.
My PS4 got more action originally, and that had died down for a while until recently with Resident Evil 2 Remake and Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Right now, outside of the RE2/FF7/RE3 Remakes and Gears, my gaming is almost entirely focused on the Switch.

I’m rambling, but all that is to say that I’m considering NOT being a day 1 adopter for the next gen of consoles, and that’ll be the first time since 2003. But we’ll see.

In terms of sticks, I’m also curious to see if there’s going to be a VLX-killer out there (very happy with my VLX Kuro, although even that doesn’t get very much use these days), but I probably won’t be buying it even if it happens. I mostly use custom sticks at home, or my modded Exar Exaprize for my Switch on the go (because it’s so tiny and portable). For now, the only sticks that are still on my “to buy” list are:

  • Agetec
  • VSHG
  • HSS-0130

Funny you talk about consoles, as I am thinking of selling a few of mine

I was really close to selling my consoles to cut down on clutter when I got a CyberGadget Retro Freak, a few years ago. Emulation was 95% good enough, use almost any controller/fightstick, and save states

…but no zapper/menacer/super scope 6 support, the rom dumps were encrypted to run on my specific Retro Freak only (so still not a “true” backup copy of my games), and I learned that breaking out the NES, Genesis, or SNES in the middle of the living room, busting out all the cords/multi-taps/controllers, and playing some 4P RC Pro AM II, General Chaos, Super Bomberman, NBA JAM, etc. with the homies and\or kiddos is really how I grew up enjoying these machines.

…if Arcade1Up ever makes that NFL Blitz/NBA Showtime combo cabinet they’ll have my $$$ so fast!

I sold all of mine.

Just have ps3’s… Loads

I have 2 with 1.5tb now since i upgraded hdd’s this week with all my games on

And i have another 5 ps3’s, just waiting on a sale for 5 x 27" monitors to go on sale so i can eventually have that 5 screen gran turismo 6 setup with my t500 rs wheel

And im down to less than 20 sticks, from about 50+ 2 years ago

I’ve never sold any systems, but I keep amassing them.
I bought super-slim 500GB PS3 from local classifieds about a year ago because I wanted something light, small and with a big hard drive that I could bring to local shows for people to play on (my alternative was my 60GB PS3 phat, which was big and annoying to carry around).

But I have multiples of a ton of that generation, weirdly enough.
3 Wiis - Black US version, White JP version, Red UK version
3 X360s - original day 1 version US in white, the “budget” version in white JP, and the gloss slim version US
2 PS3s - 60GB phat, 500GB super slim

For the Wiis and X360s, I didn’t care to mod them, so I bought other region versions for imports.

Started customizing my JYS Arcade Stick.

Shipping was delayed so still waiting on the buttons. I suck at cutting artwork, but the buttons will cover it up. Then aesthetically it’ll look good, but I still have to wait for quick disconnects to in the mail to do the wiring. Honestly if you want a budget stick for the Switch I’d just get the Mayflash F300, only reason I own one is because I got a good deal on a used one. However this has been a fun project.

So my PS4’s HDD is on its last legs. It’s quarantine here so I can’t just go to the store to buy a new one. That said, I have a spare laptop that we basically use once or twice a year to run an old scanner, and I’m thinking of using the HDD for that to replace the one on the PS4 (it’s even bigger). The thing I’m wondering about is the speed. I’ve been told that I need a 7200 rpm drive, and the one from the laptop is only 5400. However, isn’t the stock HDD on the PS4 5400 rpm as well?

Must…resist…wallet…no!

Yeah to my experience there are no 7200rpm drives on PS4 models. Even my Pro was 5400

It seems the Tanita twin stick white proto is just a relabeled gen1 SEGA Boardmaster supergun shell from the original company who made it : the Tanita prototype twin stick had the same white powder coat , but now it’s revised in matte black, the twin stick proto also had the exact same structure and even the same function button holes (two toggle switches and one 24mm central button) as the 1st version of the SEGA Boardmaster… plus all their promo pics NEVER showed the left side where the supergun connector slot was located…how convenient. Shown on the bottom is the proto. The final black version VDC-18-C doesn’t have the top function holes like gen1 boardmaster anymore .

Supposedly a new joystick was to be designed for Tanita and this is it now in the final black case : image

Seems like it’s in the same vein as some of the console VO sticks apart from that collar which seems to house the pivot bearing, with a typical sanwa JLK type handle

image

the demonstration proto for the black twin stick has what seems to be a Sanwa JLF type transparent snap-fit assembly for body and gate (here is only the body upside down without the gate)
image
notice the final release picture shows a black body and transparent plastic gate but the explanatory video shows a presentation/prototype model which is all transparent clear plastic (even the actuator) as seen in chinese ls56 clones and some “led” jlf clones.
presentation video from september 2019 (joystick is shown at around 06:41 ) :

at first, before viewing the proto video or seeing the final release pics i though it could be somewhat similar to the ascii joysticks(ls56 style), or even revised JLJ-PL2-8V, going as far as thinking the new tanita joystick it could be a microswitch revised version of the analog JLK-GF2-AT (including me) or better , as what was seen in the arcades.
The thing is the final joystick is just a JLF styled flight stick, with a specific pivot housing and hinge lever OMRON switches (unlike the JLF which has pin plunger type).

Since the twinstick is to be sold via Sanwa’s official shop (link) , it seems evident they made the new JLF inspired joystick for Tanita.

The white Tanita proto seemed to sport, from the look of handles, the same Sanwa joysticks as seen in the HORI hx3-50 twinstick (JLJ-PL2-8V ).
image

The suction cups otoh scream cheap as hell, like those budget wholesale fightsticks. For 510 bucks one would hope they’d have at least put quality rubber feet.

Edit 2:

GUTSHOTS available in this LINK

caption :

handle has a couple of OMRON SS-5D subminiature pin plunger switches rated at 5A and 150gf actuation force, and the OMRON SS-5GL111 long lever subminiature switch at 5A and 40gf actuation force. all are SPDT.

Switches in the joysticks (shown still on the SNAP-FIT JLF style gate) are just OMRON V-152-3A5 hinge lever switches which are rated at the same old 125gf actuation force as the OMRON switch V-152-6A5 used in Sanwa JLW before . V-152-3A5 is the official replacement btw. It’s a bit on the soft side then, for those who aren’t aware of the specs on this type of stick, as the JLK type sanwa handle exerts a stronger force than say a JLW shaft, up to you to replace them with 180gf (OMRON doesn’t make 180gf) or 250gf switches if that’s your thing. This type of switch swap is done often in the Korean joystick world today.

My only concern that the Sticks are Microswitch and not analog.
Most likely I am not getting this stick, but it does not mean I can’t dual mod my existing Dual Stick controller.

i edited the post, check the vid. they really got us hoping with that joystick but it isn’t anything else than a revised JLF with hinge lever switches as in the JLW.
The final stick has a black nylon body like the JLF, it’s not transparent anymore.

I mean, it’s for Virtual On. Why would it need to be analog.

Indeed, the VO sticks have always been digital , I was speaking of quality in terms of “hope”, so that the Tanita would be as good or better than the cab models or say the sanwa JLJ in the hori hx3-50. The JLF styled custom designed joystick for Tanita doesn’t look anything special to me …

There no need for it, I was just hoping I have a easier time converting my current twin stick for PS4 support. I probilly pull out the existing dual mod inside and go with a project box, a PS4 Box and a Saturn Box (I got a Saturn to Dreamcast adapter that that supports Virtual On controllers).
Or I can dual mod with those two PCBs. I would definitely use a clone pad, perhaps the new RetroBit licensed Saturn controller
