Best Fighting Game of the Generation?

Not if you can’t play games locally

Every fighting game sucks if you can’t play locally, pick up a moba or rts.

I have to drive 45 minutes each way to play locally, something I’m actually so poverty at the moment money-wise that I can’t afford to spend $20 on gas a week to do it, so essentially 90% of my time spent playing against people in fighters comes from online. And even with that, I still can see that KOFXIII is an awesome game. Though, the good netcode has certainly helped me enjoy TTT2, Blazblue, and even P4A.

Locally is always better, but if your friends aren’t into fighting games it’s a bit more difficult. Organize with strangers? Peruse the scant arcades? This isn’t like that golden age of arcades 70s/80s/90s where arcades were everywhere and huge lines waiting at cabinets.

Tekken Tag 2

Side note but, does anyone else find it weird that the Killer Instinct 3 thread has a strict “positivity only” policy where you’re like…not allowed to say anything bad about or criticize the game?

You gotta realize the fans of the series are living their dream right now. Let them bask in it before the inevitable downfall.

The thread doesn’t have that policy at all, they just want actual discussion about what might be wrong with the game. not blind stupidity.

Why would you post this here?

Well, the thing is just I’M a fan of the series who’s upset with how it looks and the “main roster by season” thing, so it seems odd to me having spoken to some people in there and to just be treated like a troll for pointing out the game comes across as mashy and as having a kinda scummy business practice with the characters. Hell, I’ve wanted a new KI since the year 2000 and want to like it, so it just seems to me like all the people kissing its ass are doing so either because A. they’re required to for whatever reason, or B. it has the name “Killer Instinct” as opposed to actual gameplay mechanics or changes in it thus far.

When I look and stack up what I’ve seen to stuff of the fighting games out today, or even to the stuff of GG: Xrd, from a game mechanic/engine perspective it’s just a head scratcher I feel.

Dude, seriously, there is a thread for this. Using this thread to talk about a completely unrelated thread is just ridiculous.

I’ve said what I needed to say, there’s no need to be going slapping unnecessary "Off-Topic"s on it. This is a topic that in and of itself is about comparing fighting games to each other, so I don’t really think it can be considered “Off-Topic”. Either way though, I’m content dropping it.

Remember how hype SFxT character reveals were. Yeah, call me when it’s out and has time to be explored. Til then let them bask in aimlessness.

SFXT, at least the 2013 version, is an awesome game. It emphasizes the neutral game way more than SF4, and is pretty well balanced.

Yeah I remember all the FGC celebs being a part of Capcom’s hype machine and praising v2012 and where are they now? They jumped ship like everyone else. Even fixing 50% of the problems of the game in v2013 didn’t bring them back. Now Max is doing his “manufactured hype” routine for KI and people can’t see the similarities…

For 3D games? Probably TTT2. Maybe VF5? Not too familiar with the VF series but everybody has positive things to say about it.

2D is hard…
SF4 - Definitely the most popular. Not a bad choice by any means.
MvC3 - The most hype and probably the most “fun.” But if we examine it critically… the game is a mess with character balance and the balancing of game mechanics. And the netcode is awful.
KoF13 - Another good choice. Original release suffered from lack of online community. Maybe Steam will help? Seems like there are very few great KoF players in America though. So it’s hard to get competition.
Skullgirls - It was nice to see a game developed without a major company. Personally, the pace of the game and the animation didn’t feel fluid so I wasn’t a fan. Fluidity is very important to me.
MK - It was nice to see them try to make a more competitive game. Problems were the graphics, the animations, the horrible netcode… too many issues.
Injustice - Another good step. I still have issues with the graphics and choppy animations and the netcode is hit or miss… maybe it will get better on PS4??
P4A - Good choice. I just couldn’t get into it because I wasn’t able to find any character I connected with. For a game series praised on its stories and characters… is it odd that I found all of them annoying?
BB - This was my gateway into FGs. I enjoyed it but it never seemed to catch on. After the first game… the mechanics got overly complicated and charging full price for a re-balance and 2 or 3 extra characters was a rip-off IMO.
SFxT - Terrible launch. I have to say… even with the re-balance I’m not a fan of the gameplay. I just don’t like how the Tekken characters play (Never been a fan of Tekken… except Tekken 2). The art direction is horrible too. How did they make the SF characters look so great in SF4 but so hideous in SFxT?? The music was pretty bad too.

If I had to choose… I’d say Street Fighter gets 1st place, KoF 2nd, and P4A 3rd.

Wait. Since when is SF4 an American game ? I can see MvC3, but Sf4 ? Last time I checked, Capcom is a Japanese company.

I find it funny when some people complains of SF4 being too scrubby to casual friendly, and then in other thread you see complains of SF4 being too difficult because 1 fr links and all. And usually are the same people.

As for 3S, I like that the first thing you said about that game is that is well balanced.

So somehow this thread hasn’t been driven into mod-locking yet. :stuck_out_tongue:

So many different opinions, that’s how you know we’re living in good times. Mostly every game has been pretty good… even MK9 and DoA5U are decently good.

About the KI3 thing, I can deal with the hype and whatnot. The gameplay isn’t anything great, but it’s good enough; other factors will determine it’s tournament success for that reason. Hopefully people give the game a chance to grow (I like how Double Helix has handled the game despite Microsoft’s conditions). If not, there’s like 10-20 other options people can choose from (not on XB1 of course).

That said, my fav games of this gen (in no order) are SF4, UMvC3, KoFXIII, GGXXAC+R, and Tag2.

Skullgirls has the most frames of animation per character ever. It is in the guiness book of world records for that. So I don’t understand this complaint.

Well since this versus thread is still open…
The best FG of this generation is obviously GGXXAC+R
