Best Fighting Game of the Generation?

So I feel as if Ive gotten back into fighting games in a big way this generation, fell out of it for a while when everything seemed to be in 3d

this gen, there’s been a shift baq to 2d planes in fighters; or maybe it was just MK, but im a big MK guy

Wondering what the forum thinks of this last console generation’s offerings in Fighting games…

me and a few friends sit back an reminisce over the last gen on our podcast, hope yall check it out.

share a few memories and opinions here, let us know bc were doing a 4 part cast covering everything from Fav moments to best DLC to best character

to Fav Fighting game, and Id like to be able to say…well over at Shroyuken they got a lotta love for KOH XIII or skullgirls, etc

SSFIVAE2012

Netcode aside, KOF XIII

SFxT or SF4

Still waiting for it.

KOFXIII
A real honest fighting game.

Super Street Fighter 4…you mad?

Probably TTT2 for overall gameplay, design, presentation and online experience

A shame I never bothered to learn it properly

Well, this is all personal opinion. I’d say SF4 was great for sparking a lot of interest in fighters. But I don’t feel the gameplay was anything worth getting excited over.

My personal favorite is KOFXIII, but the Steam edition for the improved netcode. Skullgirls is awesome for a number of reason, like the art style, and the fact that it’s a MvC type of game(which you don’t see a lot of outside of Capcom releases). And SG used GGPO, which is a plus.

All-in-all, this console was amazing for fighters. We had a ton of XBLA/PSN re-releases, and so many new titles. There is no clear “best” game. I wouldn’t go by sales figures either, unless you want to put Mk vs DC as one of the best(which would just be insane).

Several factors are important: Originality, Fun factor, Future Potential, Presentation, etc. Taking all those factors together, personally I would say Skullgirls. IMO it has the best visuals, soundtrack, most original (besides divekick), most future potential (it has problems now but the devs are constantly patching and working on perfecting it), and its fun factor is right up there with the best.

SF4 is shit.
KOF 13 takes the title.

Best = / = Most sucessfull

Dong dong never die

As I said, still waiting for it. I’ve yet to play Persona Arena. But if I could elaborate.

SF4 went in the direction of “Let’s make this easy so casual players can get some kind of result and feel good about it.” and it just made a boring and a scrubby game.

KOF13 had the same idea but instead of making it easy they made it all about basic EX/HD mode combos, get 'em in the corner, make them guess block, GG. And intentional or not EX moves, Drive Cancels, and EX Supers added ridiculous anime-game-esque corner juggles that go on way too long and are extremely powerful.

Marvel is just whatever.

Skullgirls does a lot of things right but again it gives you ridiculously long combos that easily kill any hype you had and aesthetically it’s just not fun to play.

All of these games (Except maybe SF4) have features or ideas that are great but they’re not just fun and get retarded once they’re figured out.

3S is still, still, the best fighting game of all time. The balance is good, there’s a lot of character variety, the characters are unique and fun to figure out -none of them really feel copy/pasted from other games- and you can play them how you want for the most part, and there’s a level of strategy that is perceptible to a casual player that’s also easy to pick up but difficult to master. And (for the most part) it doesn’t feel like the kind of game that’s basically “I just need to know this 1 setup and I can win.”

This

No Versus Threads

Let’s not open the can of worms, “best of all time”. This is about this current generation.

Virtua Fighter 5, Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection.

I don’t think it can be SFxT due to how much people spurned it… if it’s 3D then it’s TTT2 hands down (you should probably separate the 3D from the 2D imo since they’re so different)

So TTT2 hands down as the best 3D (imo)

As far as 2D goes SFIV is by far the most popular, most played, most loved, most enjoyed, it brought the most people into the fgc, it brought the most people out of retirement, it has the largest pots at tournies… BUT

At evo Melee had the second most amount of individual viewers while MvC3 had the most, but would you say melee is this generation? It surely is this generation of FGC youth, but reviewing your post you’re limiting it to console generation.

IMO this disqualifies KOFXIII since the definitive version is hands down PC, and hopefully KOFXIII will have a strong online scene well into next gen.

No matter which game takes the title people will be angry, however less people will be angry with SFIV or MvC3 taking the crown, since they’re by far the most popular.
And since video games are a hobby and solely exist for enjoyment then I believe the metric for evaluating them should be whichever title provides the most enjoyment is the objectively better game.

But that’s my opinion.

Give the rose to SFIV with TTT2 as an honorable mention.

However if it was my podcast I’d celebrate this generation as the second coming of fighting games, and note how the fgc has swollen in size. Since every game brings us new toys to play with it shouldn’t be a dick waving contest about which game is better (unless we’re being stream monsters, in which case fuck injustice). Really you should discuss how successful fighting games have been with Blazblue, GG, SFIV, SFxT, MvC3, TTT2, SCV, SKULLLLLLLLLGIRRRRRRLS, Melee (fuck brawl), MK9, and here’s to many more years of smashing each other’s virtual faces in.
