I really wish people wouldn’t take our desire to see more brown skin in these games as some mistaken belief that we’re the majority in the countries we ask to be represented in.
Bring a bit of nuanced discussion on race to the topic and that somehow gets turned into us saying, “ALL BRAZILIANS ARE BLACK YES 100% BLACK LIKE IN AFRICA AND AS DARK AS OIL.”
Like no. That’s not what we’re saying. And the way some people talk, you’d think only the majority race of a given nation should ever be represented in this franchise.
To be clear, I admit my saltiness about Laura’s complexion stems from the fact the game has no black representation so far. She looks great and as others have highlighted there are plenty of Brazilians that look just like her, so I apologize for that.
Its just when I heard there was going to be a Brazilian character I anticipated that potentially being the black representative. She is though at least partially. She looks Pardo which is a mix of stuff that includes African descent. Plus the hair pays homage to traditional African hair styles.
She looks generic but I’m probably hating because I wanted to do chicken combos and sling rocks in SFV.
Eh. Her skin color is typical. Gotta be from the (mainland) United States, Jamaica with an almost 100% black population or the continent of Africa to be “certified” black in sf.

They were few and far between though. It wasn’t pretty much the norm like it is now. Which is likely due to gaming becoming mainstream and everyone wanting to put their two cents in now. Where as before the mainstream attention, zero fucks were given.
Describe your ideal representation of a black fighting game character. Because most people who make such a complaint, when put on the spot. Don’t know what the hell they want but somehow expect the devs to know. But maybe you’re the exception. So please describe this ideal black character.

Birdie isn’t what he or she would consider a “good” representation of black people in a fighting game. Which is why I asked he or she’s to describe their ideal black character. Still waiting on a response, but likely not gonna get one. Because like I said, most people who complain when asked what they want can’t tell you what they want.

Maybe Capcom can just make a black as coal, muscular as Arnie, gay/lesbian, pure zoner/grappler from Canada/some other underrepresented country, ‘non stereotype’ but still stereotypical enough to be recognisable and shut everyone up. Good luck Capcom.
