Becoming the Strongest Woman in the World (MVC3 Ed) - The Chun-Li Matchup/Team Thread

Huh, deviljin… Chun li is chun, don’t try to compare her with others. She’s a true fighter, forget about the other characters… and she can kill two characters with one hit without xfactor…

Well I know you would do that and I respect your love for Chun and all. Well specifically what I was talking about with X23 is that she doesn’t even need to mix up the person coming in. She can basically trap people with Dante’s jam session or Iron Man’s repulsor blast so they basically have no choice but to die as long as she used her XF correctly. Only 2 characters can get out of it and one of them needs 3 meters to do it. Plus it’s not based on an overlooked altercation of the game like an infinite that Capcom is going to steal from Chun any way. I agree that her infinites just like C Vipers make her very viable but once the infinites go away (which they will) I just feel she’s going to be very average at best in Ultimate unless they really buff her up in some areas.

She just doesn’t bring anything to the table that nobody else does that’s worth talking about minus things that Capcom is going to patch.

So, Because her combos does not kill, she doesn’t bring anything to the table? She brings enough and she’s really fun. Other characters might have it easier and better but that’s just how games are, not every one is gonna be top tier, someone gotta represent that lower tier. Chun li is at least better here and easier to use here than chun in mvc2. X23 does her own thing, that’s good for her, i don’t like her though.

I think you are taking DJ’s comment far too personal.
The man is not lying, in a game like MVC3, Chun Li DOES SUCK.
I use Chun Li since the very first day, and she’s the character I need to work the most to land the first hit.
Even Lei Lei seems to have a better mixup game despite her awful speed.

You cannot compare MVC2 to MVC3; they are totally different games.
I could say “Chun Li is awesome in TVC” [wich indeed is true], but I cant compare the games.

Chun Li IS a bad character, too much work for too little reward.
I don’t know why Capcom took away 2 of her best moves… and giving her that EX SBK will not help.

Also, why do you guys say she needs an OTG assist?
I really don’t feel like I need it.
In my game, I believe the only time I’d like an OTG assist would be after a throw, but I believe the only throw that may give me enough time to call an assist and hit the opponent, is the back throw in the air.

And Chun Li’s damage output is a fine example of balance.
Have checked Magneto’s? His Disruptor does almost the same damage as a Shoryuken, and can be spammed, is safe on block and super fast. That’s not balanced at all…

I could be totally wrong here but it seems like everyone is saying something fairly similar with only slight variations. Nobody is saying Chun is 3rd strike gdlkbbq, but that’s not the issue. I think people (i.e. RyanBlood, Lud, and myself included - please correct me if I’m speaking for you incorrectly) are tired of hearing that she’s low tier as if that’s a reason to dismiss her entirely. We know she’s low tier and we don’t mind that. We’re over it and interested in finding new ways to work with the tools she has.

Also, please do not misunderstand this post as criticizing DevilJin or Brian Kasugano. I respect both of your opinions and essentially agree with both of your posts. I still believe we’re all roughly on the same page about Chun’s state in the game - the only difference is where we go from there.

I think there’s 2 reasons for this difference. The first and obvious one is that you’ve adapted to Chun as an anchor character while many others play her on point. The second is purely combos. Your combos are way beyond anything 99% of Chuns are doing; more specifically, most Chuns rely on her extensive air series, which can’t end in a hyper. If I had to guess, I’d say this will probably change as our BnBs progress toward more ground-heavy ones like yours.

In fact, her aerial game is stronger because she can combo in the air and come back to the ground (Not in SJ height, though), and also thanks to her Hyakuretsu Kyaku and I’d say her jL and air dash too too.
That’s why I believe her Shichisei Senkukyaku would be an awesome Lv.3 for her.

About my Chun Li, I use her as an anchor character, but in my Phoenix team, she’s my point.
And to be honest, maybe she does a little better with Ryu’s Hadouken covering her approaches.
But when she’s an anchor, she’ll probably face 1 or 1/2 characters. If you can lure his assist and punish with Kikoushou, it will be awesome for you.
And I’d like to know why you guys say she needs an OTG. Maybe she’s got some techniques I haven’t thought about.

I’ve been thinking about something… I believe it’s safer for her to approach with dash + crouching M when’s she’s facing your opponent’s last character, because if he’s got characters like Akuma, he’ll probably do a random HC sometime, and if you are close to him, you can use her Hoyoukusen to punish.
I noticed that when I realized how much I end up getting hit by random HCs when I try an air dash.
Do you guys believe that might be a better strategy?

I’d really like for someone to give a description of how they use their Chun-li in their fights. Like, a real description, based on their real strategy. Be honest about your tactics.

What’s your team dynamic?
What’s your favored way to get in against zoners?
What’s your favored defense against Rushdown?
What are your mix-ups? What are your follow-ups to those mix-ups?
What’s your bread n butter? How much damage and meter do you get for it?
What is your strategy for snapped-in opponents?
Are air grabs a part of your offense?
What attacks don’t you use and why?
What’s your overall strategy? (rushdown, lockdown, zoning, footsies, etc)

Absolutely. I always try to stay on the ground with Chun when I don’t have coverfire. The threat of hoyoukusen on reaction keeps them honest. And 9/10 people play Akuma as anchor…so yea, that’s an appropriate example.
I’ve also had a little luck with using her triple jump as a way of fishing out bad habits from other players. Just hop around a bit to see how they react and you can block so you’re safe. If they try to meet you in the air, Chun’s j.L seems fairly dominant.

Come one, people. I’m sure someone here has to have an answer to at least one of these questions.

I’ll give it a shot. Here’s a rundown of my general gameplay with Chun.

Spoiler

Team dynamic:
Chun-y/Storm-a/Sentinel-a. Storm assist pushes foes into corner and can beat out a lot of projectiles. Sentinel assist helps Chun get in and controls a lot of space.

Vs zoners:
Call an assist then superjump. She doesn’t have many other options. Hoyokusen hyper through projectiles if they become predictable.

Vs aggro:
Try to catch them with cr.M at max range if they’re coming toward you. Airdash j.M if they become passive.

Mixups:
Honestly my mixups are lacking. Sometimes I’ll mix in a F+H after a cr.M to catch someone sleeping.

BnB:
I posted it in the combo thread. Headstomp BnB into standard triple jump ender then THC.

Snapback setups:
Nothing special here. All of Chun’s options against a snapped in opponent can be beaten by blocking.

Air grabs:
Only useful as an antiair and can only combo after it with THC in/near a corner.

Unused attacks:
SBK and Kikoken.

Overall strategy:
Chun basically has 2 approaches: dash up cr.M and air dash j.M. Neither is effective against an airborne opponent, so she needs to keep foes grounded and in a corner. Given Chun’s lack of options to get in, this is a difficult feat.

Thanks for the response! I needed to know the general mindset of a player here so I could choose what to focus on in the tutorial. This helps out more than you know. I’ll put in a part that focuses on her mix-ups and potential mix-ups when assisted by drones. Is there anyone else here willing to share their thoughts on their strategies?

Looking forward to it, thanks. Also I listed Sentinel for simplicity’s sake. He’s arguably the most effective in that slot, but I dislike him anyway so I’m trying other characters (Ironman/Doom for beams and Ammy simply because I like the dog).

Please dedicate as much space as possible to ‘getting in’ tactics. I feel like Chun’s approach is very 2-dimensional. Also some examples of good assists that allow her to get in would be awesome. Thanks again!

Just to get this thread active again I’ve decided on Chun-Li and Ryu together for UMVC3. I wanna use a new character too but I might not able too if Chun-Li really needs an otg assist. If I’m not mistaken it seems like her more advanced stuff doesn’t transition into an air combo she can go straight into a super so maybe I can get by without one?

What do you guys think of Trish/Chun-Li/Viper for UMvC3? I know that Trish and Viper have really good setups and seem to work great with each other, but how do you guys feel about Chun-Li in the mix?

I don’t really know if they mesh well together. Chun really needs assists to help her get in. Trish’s best assists are helping control space or lock an opponent down. Viper’s good assists are usually anti-air or combo oriented. They don’t contribute to her two major problems:

 1. Getting in
 2. Opening up the opponent once you’re in.

They work well DHC wise but I feel like the assists are wasted on Chun. You’re better off not using Chun or switching assists.

Just my thoughts.
Is there going to be a new thread for UMvC3?

Anyways, I’m hoping you can help me. My team was originally Chun/Storm/Ammy but when I’ve been playing today I’ve been doing horribly and am raging hardcore. My problem is getting in. I just get zoned out all day. I’d like to keep Chun/Storm as I like their chemistry together (and they are my favorite Capcom/Marvel characters.) I know Doom’s Plasma Beam is popular but I’m not really crazy about it for some reason. I think it’s mainly because I suck with Doom xD I also used to play Sentinel in the 3rd spot but I hear this game isn’t very good for him.
They unstickied like every “Team/Matchup” thread from the other sections. This will still work.

I’ve decided I’m going to make this section work the following way:

Character Name
-Character as a Teammate
-Fighting against this character

Example:
Trish
-Good/Bad on a Chun team because of X Assist/Y DHC is good/bad.
-This is a good/bad matchup for Chun. She can lame you out so you need to do blah blah blah.

Planning on picking up Chun in UMVC3. Which new character would you say works the best with her? Otherwise, I’ll probably pair up Chun+Storm with another old char like Sent/anyone with a good projectile assist.

Chun/Storm/Sent is still a good team, even without the DHC glitch.
Chun/Storm/Doom is also a great team. Doom beam makes certain matches winnable, period.

Thank you, probably gonna roll with Chun/Storm/Doom.
