Batman: Gotham Knight DVD - anime style prequel to Dark Knight. Dir. by Bruce Timm

$30 for the 2-dsic SE? Aw, screw that, I’ll wait til I get more green.

Not Field Test I meant the one with Killer Croc, the way they drew Croc and Batman’s mouth design with the mask. Reminded me of the DT designs. Also Sano check your message wall

I really hate to say it but I think he’s rite I’m a huge Batman fanboy/fanatic but I watched half of it and went to bed. Granted I worked early this morning but the first half was not keeping me awake I’ll watch the rest tonight especially since everyone is saying the last ones are the good ones.

I really liked Gotham Knight, especially episodes 1, 5 and 6. Working through the pain was visually amazing.

Checked. But yeah nothing about inspirations from either artist. Would of been nice if we got commentaries from the Japanese staff like Animatrix did so we could get answers to things like that. But the bits during the commentary about Kevin Conroy putting people at ease during 9/11 and Denny O’Niel talking about how Batman at one point carried a police badge and at another time Alfred was a big fat goofball in the comics - lol -was pretty cool.

Oh yeah, the Blu-Ray package lies to you. It says there’s a Japanese 5.1 track, which there isn’t. Damn you, WB.

Yes. Yes, yes, yes.
The last line of “Working Through the Pain” was great.
Of course it’s just me over-analyzing, but that last line summed up so much about Batman and Bruce Wayne for me. The more you take in the context, the more awesome it is.

Alfred: “Take my hand.”

Batman: looks at guns
"I…can’t."

Brief interview with Bruce Timm about Gotham Knight -

I agree, “working through the pain” is the best.

Field test IS a great story, but shit animation.

Deadshot best action.

Who/what is Tekkonkinkreet? Also I did like fat Batman, makes him a fucking human and not a greek god.

The first skit had a great premise, and thinking Batman is hiding in shadows is a pretty believable way some kid would see Batman. The flying one is a bit more of a stretch, and the robot perspective was hella gay. Ending with that kid sneaking up on a guy who had Batman in a corner was ghetto.

The second skit would have been better if that conversation about Batman’s merits or lack thereof was focused on more than the gunfight.

The third skit (Field Test, I think) had crappy animation but was otherwise great. This was classic Batman right here. He totally would have freaked out when the bullet hit one of the criminals, and despite the animation style, his expression when that happened was BEAUTIFUL.

The fourth skit (the one with Scarecrow and Killer Croc) was okay-ish. It was too focused on detailing the setting, though.

The fifth skit (the one about pain) was also great, and Batman’s last line was a classic.

The final skit (Deadshot) had some great animation; in fact I would have preferred they used that animation style for the whole thing. BUT WTF @ BRUCE WAYNE APPRECIATING GUNS!? Batman is not a rational man; yes, he’s a great detective, but a rational human being he is not. This is not a guy who will acknowledge the benefits of the sort of personal firearms like the kind that killed his parents. The fight with Deadshot ended way too quickly.

Kind of depends on the writer at the time and which Bat Book, but to me it was very in character.

In Nightwing during Chuck Dixon’s run, when Dick Grayson applied to the Police Academy he knew how to use a gun, basically because Batman taught him how to use it. The reason was, Batman and both Robin had to know EVERYTHING about guns in order to avoid using them / getting hit by them.

Things like knowing how many bullets a certain gun carries, the likelyhood of something jamming, how to escape the path of bullets (can be performed in real life to some digree) and how to dismantle guns are all things Batman has to know. So he has to no guns better than the people actually using them against him.

In short he might not like them, but he can’t ignore their existence in his line of work. So on some level, he can and probably does appreciate the power they have, being a powerful person in his own right.

IMHO anyway…

Very true, but what bothered me about the Deadshot skit is that he talked about guns as though he liked them. He was a little too… enthusiastic about them.

SNAKE SNAKEEEEE. Like he said he admired how a gun looked and feel IIRC.

I enjoyed the whole thing, my least favorite being the first skit.

Despite everyone’s opinion, I actually enjoyed the animation work in “Field Test”, but then I’m a stickler for that design hook.

“Field Test” and “Working through the pain” Were probably my most favorite, since they had the most emotional impact and humanized Batman. Batman finding all those guns, his freak out of finding so many, and unwillingness to leave them behind was pure gold.

“Deadshot” was a great piece, but more from an artistic perspective for me. I loved the take on how Deadshot looked, and if I’m not wrong it was done by the Hellsing crew (Hope I’m right here…)

Overall I enjoyed it for what it was, and I think it was a great take on Batman.

Naw, they didn’t do Hellsing. It’s from Madhouse, (Ninja Scroll, Highlander, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, etc etc).

Yeah, and that was the whole point of that short, which is why I like it so much. The kids tried to make Batman look like some supernatural ultra awesome unbeatable entity, while in fact he’s very human.

Thanks for that, now my Vampire Hunter D fandom side hates me at the moment lol.

The shorts were all pretty good, my least favourite being Field Test. It’s a nice build-up to TDK, although not nearly as amazing.

I didn’t really care for it. To me (since I’m not into much Anim), the idea of the “chapters” or “stories” seemed to jump around, and much of the dialogue I didn’t understand (it seemed to not fit with the story). Plus, I don’t think that animation style works for batman (though the first “chapter” looked the best, it was the worst overall). Plus, it ended sorta weird, with the Bat Signal then just cutting off.

So I guess a 5/10 from me, but that’s just because it isn’t really my kind of thing.

P.S. the first story seemed kinda like watching a Gorillaz video.

I’ve watched it 5 times now…every bit of this is so nice.

The extra disk is full of win also.

I liked how hard Batman was in “Crossfire.”
