I thought it was really good.
The first was my favorite. I liked the Fatman look.
This was really great! It was what I thought it would be, like Batman Black And White - different authors and writers tell different stories about Batman and Bats never looks the same from story to story - but with an anime twist and in color.
Really good to hear Kevin Conroy doing Batman’s voice again!
Each part had something I really dug, from Yagami Light of Death Note Batman to Ninja Scroll Batman - - and not to mention stuff I didn’t think I’d ever see related to Batman like mecha (kind of…) and round anime forcefields… :wow:
Ha ha at Scott Menville’s part, he does the voice of Robin in Teen Titans and there’s a pretty cool scene in there for fans of that show.
If I had to pick one story that I liked the most it would have to be ‘Working Through The Pain’ because I love stories about young Bruce’s adventures around the world, it’s one of the reasons I liked Batman Begins so much. Lots of love for the Deadshot one though. Again, there was something I liked in each story.
Good fun! Pretty hyped for Dark Knight now. :woot:
Off to watch the commentary now.
Are there two versions of this DVD release? Like a special edition? I’m thinking of picking this baby up soon. I picked up Justice League: The New Frontier special edition over the weekend. This face sums it up: :amazed:
Just watched it, my favorite was also “Working Through The Pain.” I loved how it was really about the emotional pain he carries with him everywhere he goes. And how in his delirium started freaking out about all those guns he found, almost a physical manifestation of his pain…
… then the next short he’s like, “I’d never use one, but guns are pretty badass!”
So is the 2 disc special edition blu-ray?
No. Basically it takes 2 discs of regular DVDs to fit what is on one Blu-Ray.
Regular DVD - No Special Features
2 Disc - Special Features
Blu-Ray - Everything the 2 disc set has on one disc
Were any of the shorts influenced by the artist revered in DMC3 for his devil designs and kamen rider style?
This is what I needed to know cuz I was like fuck the special extra is not on blu ray? lol thx.
No… Do you mean DMC’s main artist Daigo Ikeno (SF4 also) or the Shin Megami Tensei artist Kazuma Kaneko that did Dante’s Devil Trigger design in 3 as payback for Dante being in Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne? Kamen Rider? Well there is a Gatchaman-like (G-Force) Batman in ‘Field Test’ but the inspiration is most likely Gatchaman as Bruce Timm points out in the commentary… Closest thing I can even think of. There’s a few demonic things in the flick but not a whole lot and no insect people like Kamen Rider…
I thought Gotham Knight was decent. I really liked the first three stories, the last three were better in retrospect… maybe it was cause I was tired at the time I didn’t feel them when I was watching them. I hated the art in “In Darkness Dwells” though. Field test was one of my favorites.
Anyone check out the BTAS eps on the disc? I didn’t like that they seemed to zoom in and cut off the frames in the BTAS episodes on the BR though to make it widescreen. I did like that they included the “Legend of the Dark Knight” ep that the GK story “Have I got a story for you” emulated… and if you didn’t know, or haven’t seen it before, watch that BTAS episode for a great shot at Joel Shumacher (sp?). I can’t believe they got away with that.
Haven’t checked the BTAS eps but yeah animated TV eps that old are the hardest things to upgrade to HD. It was easy with the Justice League eps on the New Frontier DVD since that was animated digitally. You can un-letterbox it though via either your HDTV settings or PS3 settings, I’ll usually play around with the settings on both until it looks right with older stuff like Captain N, Ranma 1/2, etc.
Again haven’t seen it, but picking up the entire BTAS series is probably a better bet… And watching it un-letterboxed too.
Just watched it, loved it.
I’m shocked at some of the directors they got for different ways.
Shoujiro Nishimi (Have I Got a Story for You) was a great choice, Tekkonkinkreet was too good.
Yasuhiro Aoki (In Darkness Dwells) was a good choice too, I’ve been waiting for him to do art direction since Mind Game, and his short in Animatrix. I love his art style.
Futoshi Higashide and Toshiyuki Kubooka (Crossfire/Working Through Pain respectively) really surprised me, but it was a pleasant one.
They haven’t done ANY art direction whatsoever since Giant Robo: The Day The Earth Stood Still in '92 which I love, and I thought they had retired or something. It seems like they have a sort of Satoshi Kon and Peter Chung feel to their animation respectively now and I can’t complain.
Now for the bad.
Field Test was one of the best stories, but the art was truly awful.
I haven’t liked Hiroshi Morioka since .Hack//Sign, he’s just been turning out mediocre animation for crappy adaptations and spinoffs for years now.
Tsubasa Chronicles, Madlax, .Hack//Sign: Legend of the Twilight?
Ugh.
Other than that, it was worth the buy.
Just upscale the old episodes on your PS3. It looks REAL good. DVD is still trash, but you get the idea.
Gonna try that out thanks!
“Working Through the Pain” was excellent. I believe it captured the essence of Batman and why he does what he does. Batman holding all of those guns in his arms at the very end was masterfully done.
Dead Shot was also awesome. Lots of great quotes in that one and it looked awesome. Good stuff all around.
CROC AND FUCKING SCARECROW. DONE AND DONE. I coulda sworn I’d heard paul giamatti and fucking Kevin Spacey. Fuck this fucking misleading pile of dung. Jerks.
Just finished watching it. Dead Shot is obviously the best one(action-wise). The others are alright. Working Through The Pain was definitely good and so was Field Test. Those captured Batman’s crime-fighting persona down pretty well.
i liked working through the pain the most. it had really nice metaphor at the end. dead shot was good too, because of the action it served. the animation was top notch in all parts but the other stories were pretty mediocre in my opinion.
