Here’s some videos of recent tournament play for me. I got 4th but I scrubbed out big time in the match for 3rd lol. I’d like a critique even on the matches I won as I feel like sometimes the opponent was more inferior then my skills were good.
Boxer vs. Rufus and Akuma
I suck at fighting Rufus and this guy knew it that’s why he picked him. So i don’t count beating his rufus as meaning much. I’d like some critique on what i woudl be doing vs. a real rufus though.

sigh I have to shed a tear everytime i watch this. Huge choke job by me.
Anyway thanks for any critiques.
Gotta work on consistently landing your combos man. I notice that the only time you really landed jab jab short hb was off of a jump in, or a whiffed dp or something. I saw a lot of jab jab… nothing. If you know that your getting pushed too far away, take a step forward and continue the string, maybe throw. Keep mixing it up.
Another thing is that your game was very one dimensional. You didn’t use a lot of variety. No overheads, no ex rush uppers, no low smashes. If your opponent is really trying to bait to FA punish (like that ryu), you need to bring some armor break into the game to scare him off. All I saw were straits and lows.
Against Bison, you could have been way more offensive. When he’s waking up, you can seriously safe jump in at him for free every time. He has no solid option, except maybe teleport. But when he starts to fall in love with it you can make him pay by either just dashing up and throwing or if he becomes obvious you can charge a TAP and smack him while jumping.
When your getting crossed up on wake up, if you really need to HB out of there, don’t use ex. Fierce is much better as it takes your farther away.
On the bright side, you don’t do random shit and you have a good AA game. Your footsies aren’t that bad either.
Just practice the match ups and you’ll be alright.
So seem to only have two things you do when there’s a fireball coming at you. One of them being you charge down back and wait so you can headbutt, or you just jump over it into j. HP or j. HK
There’s a few problems with this. Balrog is a rush down character, and either is a very effective way of making in on your opponent, especially good Ryus will not throw fireballs that you can punish once you’re in jump in range, instead he’ll see your jumps and react to them with shoryukens into EX fireballs or ultras and headbutting through fireballs can be punished as well if they see it coming. You can’t be afraid and hold that charge forever, you gotta get in and keep the pressure on him. You also had some instances where you from half or full screen EX Dash Punched your way in, both of with can be beaten by a simple walk up throw, or worse combos into ultra.
Ryu left a few openings where you could of done some good punishes on him, one specific one is when he missed HP shoryuken and you sweeped when you could of c. MP xx HP Headbutt for more damage
The dash forward to ultra was nice, but the Ryu did seem to have a good zoning game so you’ll have more trouble applying that to better players
When you have someone in corner, keep them there. In the second round you jumped over, put yourself in the corner and took an ultra when you could of simply stayed in front of him and kept the pressure on with jabs, grabs, and other attacks, don’t give him room to breathe but watch out for wake up shoryukens
Don’t be afraid, you can walk forward and lose that charge and still have plenty of great normals to play with
You had a lot of jab, jab, nothing. Work on your execution, and use overhead sometimes when you have you opponent blocking low.
Also, don’t always end your block strings with a RH. Good players will pick up on it and begin to FA punish your poke. Sometimes it’s better to just walk up a bit and reset your mix up.
Don’t be afraid to FA fireballs and neutral jump. Revenge meter is your friend vs Ryu and Sagat, because it keeps there FB spam in check.
You can’t rely on jumping forward to be your only way to get in. If the Ryu player was better, he could have spanked you out of the air over and over again. It’s ok to slowly walk towards him, blocking a fb or two.
I have to disagree with what was said above. You can play Balrog as a rush down character if you want, but that’s not how he should be played. You want to pick your spots, gain a life lead, and hold on to it. Balrogs defense is just as solid as his offense.
Overall, your execution and throw game needs the most work. Just keep at it and you’ll be solid.
im your standard newb, willing to take criticism trying to improve my game. i guess only way to get better is play alot? i hate matches with zangief, vega, fuerte. seems like the only matchup im not completely clueless about are the shoto’s.
This is his and myself’s matches together today. I was hoping I could get some tips for my rog, in addition to the tips he wants for his. I think my biggest problem is not punishing hard enough, using throws instead of c.mp xx headbutt to punish. Also I get a bit aggressive when life is even, throwing out some stuff that does not always have a great risk/reward (random dash punches. I use them for pressure but I think I overuse them). Also dash upper + throw is balls against another rog
ex-overhead is really effective in rog v rog. It will eat most of rog’s dash punches and on counter hit it stand them up so you can connect c.lk, headbutt. If it’s not a counter hit just do cr. rh after. You guys definitely didn’t use that at all and it’s a key to the mirror matchup. Also TAP can be effective but only 1. Anything more and they can punish it with a straight. I wouldn’t bother using any ex-moves besides the overhead. EX-headbutt is only to use if you think they’re going to sweep you when you get up. Out side of that the bar is all for the overhead.
nah, i’d sweep punch them then. Balrog has no wakeup options that can’t be swept outside of ex moves and ultra. ex overhead should be thrown in randomly and against their dash straights if you know it’s coming.
i managed to do final tap super last night on a sim…was hilarious. i have yet done full dash upper ultra combo online to this date.
the biggest thing i think is that you forgot balrog has special moves. Sakura doesn’t have a way to just knock rog out of moves on reaction unless you do dash punches from really far. Definitely need to do more random straight dash punches with the occasional low and overhead. She can’t do much of anything to TAPs either. You pretty much let her stay on offensive and didn’t do a lot more then mashing on jab for the most part. Gotta poke on her with more then just jab. Cr. rh, and standing fierce and rh come to mind.
IIRC you can get punished by dragon punch 3 frame startup on a ex low rush punch if it’s deep? I think ex low rush is like -4 on block? I’m not 100% sure but if anything i’d be going for ex rush torpedos. Those are pretty safe like -1 on block.
Against ryu this is obviously a better option against his FA baits. Also i think you blocked c.HK by Ryu a few times in which case you can punish that with just straight dash punch and even probably c.HK.
Other then that the only other thing is you FA mid screen when ryu isn’t doing anything i’m not sure what this accomplishes really. It’s not like you’re baiting anything from him.
only thing i saw was there was a couple times he jumped in where you coulda anti-aired him with s.mp or cr.hp. So just work on the spacing on those. Other then that pretty good. Oh also always be prepaired for random uppercuts by ryu when he has 2 ex bars and ultra. It’s pretty much a free dragon punch attempt so there’s hardly any risk in him doing it which is why it’s highly likely he’ll just throw it in randomly.
