Not sure how useful this is but for an easy combo that does a bit over 400 damage I’ve been doing this on stunned characters if I don’t want to risk dropping a link or I don’t have ultra available.
FA3, fwd dash, cl.hp xx RFxx throw.
It’s about 413 damage for 3 bars. For some reason Balrogs FA and red focus seem to do a bit more damage than other characters. I’m guessing it’s because it’s hard to actually hit anything with it.
Well, it depends on the stun, but why not do lvl3 red focus, cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.lk xx hp.hb? I’m sure that’d either do more damage or equivalent damage for less meter and almost equivalent execution. Also IMO most of the big boy combos scale heavy after red focus so cr.lp, cr.mp xx hp.hb or cl.hk, cr.mp xx hp.ds do significant damage after red focus.
In terms of damage/stun/meter build, it’s better to not use red focus and just go for advanced combos if you can execute them. In the video I linked above, I show the difference between these 2 combos:
Red focus combo – 408 Damage
Crouch MP xx MP dash straight xx EX Red Focus, crouch MK, crouch MP xx Headbutt
HP DS fadc Combo – 435 Damage
Crouch MP xx HP dash straight xx FADC, crouch LP, close HK, crouch MP xx EX rush upper, crouch LP, crouch MP xx HP headbutt
The HP DS fadc combo builds a full meter back if you whiff a LP dash straight after the headbutt and it does more damage/stun than the red focus combo. The benefit of the red focus combo is only that it is much easier so it’s good to close out the round.
Also, just to debunk this theory I saw you guys talking about… Crouch MP does have a pretty big cancel window into special moves when it connects but no top rog player is confirming from
a single hit into the dash straight. They are either pressing the crouch MP from a range where it will only cancel if the opponent presses a button (or walks into it) OR visually confirming that it will hit when they see a whiffed throw or normal. PR Rog is a good friend of mine and we share tips often and he never told me he’s hit confirming from the initial crouch MP when he does the shimmy. Just because someone is able to do that in training mode by setting it random block (a controlled setting with no pressure) does not mean they are capable of doing it in a real match.
Here’s an example of me using an advanced combo in a real match instead of red focus. http://youtu.be/TWo81wRjsKg
That punish on her LP rapid dagger did 385 damage and almost gave me a full meter back.
P.s. If you see me dropping combos or completely not anti airing (aka blocking with my face) that’s lag lol
i swear on the life of my son… pr rog does confirm the cr mp when he sees it hit, same with the far mk. i have to real life friends that watched my money match vs him that can confirm.
From st.lp? Try plinking it. Right after the jab crouch and press hk followed immediately by mk, almost at the exact same time. Kinds like rolling your fingers on a table, but just use your ring finger for hk and your middle finger for mk.
As chadouken said: plink it. Also, outside of jump ins, FAs, and meaty/counterhit setups, it only really links off a far standing jab, or hp/ex dash swing blow.
it’s in the spreadsheet: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/20617091/char_spec.xlsx on the character specfic page under cl.hp, cr.lp. That link ONLY works on crouching characters, generally ONLY after a jump-in, there are some cases where it works from neutral, but i don’t think i ever tested for that.
Also noticed some strangeness with comboing against poison. Close normal activation happens much further away than expected, so combos like ex.ru, cr.lp, st.lp, cr.hk won’t work because the st.lp is actually cl.lp which doesn’t have the frame advantage. So you have to modify it with something like ex.ru, cr.lp, cr.lp, st.lp, cr.hk. Just FYI if anyone else ran into the same problem.
You can do things like ex.ru, cr.lp, cl.mp xx ex.ru. You can get all of the close normals out. I think the only useful one is cr.lp, cl.hp for the extra stun. None of the Red focus combos works on her already so nothing there. But you can hit-confirm cr.lp, cr.lp, cl.mp xx ex.ru with a little back-charge or delay cancel into ex.ru. I’m sure that’s possible on more of the cast not just poison.
e.g.
j.hk, cl.hk, cr.mp xx ex.ru, cr.lp, cl.hp (402/750)
j.hk, cl.hk, cr.mp xx hp.ds xx FADC xx cr.lp, cl.hk, cr.mp xx ex.ru, cr.lp, cl.hp (472/880)
It is possible, just really hard to do and I doubt you’ll ever get it off in a match. With that being said you net 402 damage/190 stun from the combo, so while not the most damage or worthwhile use for u1, it does look pretty.
Yeah, cl.hk, cr.mp doesn’t work in certain circumstances.
those that i’m aware of: Makoto after a j.hp/hk (I think both standing and crouching) and Ryu after a lvl 3 focus i think, i believe it works after a heavy jump-in.
Hi all - It’s been a long, LONG time since I’ve been here (quit early AE and only just bothered to buy USF4) - not sure if anyone remembers me but hello either way.
Sup 3nigmat1c - I noticed your comments on Poison. I’ve been hitting the training room to record more nonsensical keyboard shenanigans (and been using her as my punching bag for a video) and noticed I couldn’t pull off some basics thanks to her tall/thin hitbox so I’m not surprised she’s a bit lopsided for a few combos. Just noticed I couldn’t combo into CLK from Overhead, though replacing it with CLP or FSLP works - and it brought me here to read up on the matchup for more info. Also, I’m not sure if it’s Poison specific (or has been mentioned before // is known already) but I noticed I could combo JRH CSRH into DS Super - I don’t recall that being possible in previous versions so it’s new to me but probably old news. I’ve been away so long that I’m out of the data-loop and am under-researched but worth re-saying it again anyway considering the amount of damage that combo does.
Will include it in the combo video and can post it here if it’s at all useful. I’m still messing around with the impractical stuff like FADC forward dashes into specials, or neutral jumping roundhouses into specials, like the old days.
Ok, it’s been years since I’ve made one, but here it is. Old-school keyboard Balrog combos from almost practical to downright stupid. No, I would never try NJRH HB Ultra in a match
Includes the JRH CSRH DS Super - Can someone confirm when this was made possible and/or if it’s well known? If it’s been possible since before Ultra, then I never knew…
@RopeDrink, sorry i meant to post when you first made it, but i got caught up in work. Happy to see your return (lol) nice vid! @BlankaRog SA is saving attack or focus attack, when you hold it and release it will crumple the opponent.
Don’t know if it’s been discussed, but you can punish for DP-FADC forward (-5) with c.lp, cl.hk, c.mp dashpunch or c.lp, cl.hk, st.lp, c.hk or… You get the idea, basically anything you can do after cl.hk (or almost anything)
Just wanted to share some findings. Not sure if this has been posted before but I was looking through Rog’s frame data and it looks like you can combo out of TAP level 4 if you FADC it. (+3 on hit)
After testing it the timing and execution seems pretty much the same as the hp ds fadc cr. Jab link, so if you have that down this shouldn’t be that hard to pick up.
Not sure if this would be practical in a real match, but it does decent damage if you can get it to connect. Also if the frame data is to be believed you should be relatively safe if you FADC it (-1 on block with fadc forward dash).
So far the max damage I’ve been able to get with 3 bars is 511. (TAP 4 fadc Cr jab, cs rh, cr mp, xx ex RU, cr jab, cr mp xx hp headbutt)
