I think it is reasonable, but you lack a safe way to tag IF out. Since Proton Cannon doesn’t scale much in combo, its great after a long IF combo, but I doubt you need it because IF does 900k on his own.
IM can play very lame with Vajra assist. The combination of normal jump back s, SJ ADD s, SB and air Unibeam can be hard for some characters to get in, all of those with fly and Vajra can totally control all of the air space. You should play defensive to get them to come close to you, so IM won’t need to move an inch to combo from the assist.
If all fails xfactor level 3 Strider is as dump as they come. I think he is one of the few character that gets more out of level 3 xfactor than level 2
Wasn’t sure if I should ask this on the Cap forums or these forums, but I figured since this one is much more active, I’d go ahead and ask here.
I’m currently running Cap and Iron Man, but I haven’t been able to find a 3rd. I try to play a very defensive zoning/spacing game with both characters, and so I’m trying to find a good assist that compliments this. I’ve fiddled with Doom a little bit, but I don’t particularly like how he plays on point. Any ideas?
Doom and Sent stick out to me for those two. Doom adds really solid damage to cap by allowing him to double super at the end of combos, and also obviously adds to his zoning game. Doom is probably Iron man’s best neutral partner in my opinion, as missiles cover his air game very well, allowing him to throw out more bombs and beams, and at the same time safening up his air dash game.
Sent on the other hand provides his own interesting dimension to the team, drones are great for cap, allowing him to extend combos, zone, or apply crossup pressure with cartwheel. Sent is probably Iron Mans best offensive assist if you’re trying to use him that way, safening up his pressure game, but can be used defensively as well with applications such as confirming off of repulsar blast.
While those two are somewhat obvious and great picks, other mentions would go to Dr. Strange’s bolts, Hawkeye’s triple arrow, Vergil’s rapid slash, or even Shuma’s mystic ray if you feel like being a unique little flower. However I would definitely recommend Doom and Sent first and foremost.
You could also consider running Jam Session if you want and put Dante either second or 3rd. It helps out with IM’s neutral and combo extension, and it serves to eliminate one of Cap’s main weaknesses which is characters like trish who can stay in the air and fill the screen up with nonsense.
When in doubt try pick up either Dante or Doom, they can probably give you what you need.
Thanks for the quick replies. Doom and Sent do seem like the natural choices, but I hadn’t even considered Dante. I’ll do some messing around when I get home with these three, but does Dante actually work well as anchor? Most Dantes I’ve seen run on point or 2nd, so I don’t know too much about his anchor abilities.
EDIT: Or I guess more importantly, is it more optimal to run Dante 2nd and try to make use of unibeam, or can the two of them switch back and forth pretty interchangably?
So far I’m set on Dante/IM, where I can switch between them on point depending on the matchup.
I’m really lost on my anchor. I’ve been running with sent but I lose badly against any good keepaway. I’d like to have someone who I can extend combos and provide an benefit to both Dante and IMs neutral game. I’ve considered using trish, but I question her assists to help Tony.
Yep, that’s the challenge. Here are my suggestions that don’t include Drones - these can all extend IM Combos and serve some purpose in the neutral game.
Doom Plasma Beam - Good clearing beam assist neutral game, but then you’re playing Doom anchor who has similar issues as IM.

Akuma Tatsu - Great all purpose clearing/lockdown assist in the neutral game. Solid anchor, too.

Felicia Rolling Buckler - Tricky low hitting assist in the neutral game. Scary anchor potential.

Deadpool Quick Work - Another Tricky low hitting assist, has some pros/cons at anchor.

Haggar Lariat - That “get off me” assist. Has definite anchor issues.

Rocket Raccoon Pendulum - Pendulum is alright in the neutral game and extends IM combos. RR has some anchor issues against Up+Back, though.
Guess I’ll wipe the dust off my Akuma and give him another shot.
Deadpool seems interesting, could lend to more zoning if happy trigger was used, but on second thought both Dante and IM can contend at jump heights relatively well. I’ll fiddle around with both.
You can switch them out but it’s prob better to run Dante second. I just do it because Dante switches sides during combos alot so he may not be able to DHC back into Cap as smoothly.
i’ve been messing with dante and strider… i really want iron man to be more then just an assist on my team and for that HE NEEDS A GOOD ASSIST!.. sadly iron man isn’t an attacker on the current team that has been giving me success at tournaments(which is why i stuck to bbcs relaunch bbcs crap) … weskers best assist is iron man and dane jam session is one of the best assists for Mr.Starks
I’ve also been trying out a lot of different Whoever / Dante / Strider teams, and I gave Tony a shot on it. I’m having trouble getting results out of IM + Strider. It’s possible to convert off Vajra hitting, but you have to be reading it well in advance of it happening.
Vajra still serves its purpose to keep long distance characters in check though, which certainly helps his zoning games, and lets him approach keepaway he normally couldn’t.
Jam Session + Vajra seems like more anti-air than he needs though. I haven’t tried it with Weasel Shot and Vajra yet, but that may be a good solution. Weasel Shot’s definitely not as universal for extending combos because if I remember, it doesn’t work as well midscreen.
why anyone would try tony plus vaj is beyond me… absolutely no synergy from strider to tony imho and vaj is a lackluster assist unless you’ve got some serious ground control which tony doesnt.
If you feel that Tony is weak to characters that control from super jump height (like Trish, Zero, Morrigan, etc), than Vajra is a good answer to that. Even if he can’t get easy combos off it, it still forces them to change their gameplan.
cr.H + Vajra is a pretty good combination. He has a lot of different options off cr.H which does a good job of covering the ground area in front of him. If they jump to avoid it or approach you, Vajra is hanging over their head.
Strider assist is really dumb on any team that has another strong assist backing it up. It basically covers anything that the other assist doesn’t. Tony with Vajra and that’s it…not the scariest shit. Tony + drones or missiles + Vajra…I like it.
Well like KJunk said it allows IM to confirm off unibeam, also it’s an amazing assist that helps his neutral game greatly helping him against the likes of trish/zero and other sj happy chars.
On the other side of things unibeam hold the adversary down long enough for ioas and teleport+beam is one of the stupider things in the game.
ok, you have a point with a move like c.H + vaj.(or,actually kjunk does) i never really thought about that. it gives tony a ground controlling move plus an air controlling one that tracks.
im not convinced about it cause ive never liked c.H in neutral, but at least there is a gameplan behind it besides call vaj cause its good and hope for the best.
run it if you want to, im actually interested in how much mileage you get so if you could let us know if it goes well that would be cool… though as i said i have my doubts.
Yeah it’s not an assist you’d be looking to spam like drones or anything like that. I’d use it specifically in certain match-ups and situations, and to keep people from hanging out in the air where IM has to work hard to hit confirm on them.
I get a lot of mileage out of cr.H after my basic approaches. Since there’s nothing tricky about a square dash j.S or tridash j.2H or j.H, it’s highly likely they’ll pushblock you out.
That leaves you safe to launch a cr.H cancel into flight, gain a little air, and do it again.
