I’m being spiteful?
Sitting in the theater. Dreading this movie. =(
Dr. B being introspective created parallel universes.
And I was incredibly angry and it was incredibly late. I don’t want this to turn into a huge hate fest between you and me so can we at least agree this movie was trash and move on?
What the? Shit all I said was your writing needs work. Fuck calm down damn. There’s no hate going on.
lol looks like I will NOT be seeing this movie…I guess I’ll rewatch the series instead
America is pro at destroying decent series.
true.
A buddy of mines just came from it today and he thought it was decent plus the movie was sold out again. So its a pretty good indicator that there will probably be a second one being made.
If they do go ahead with it, my only advice is to not have M.Night write the damn script. Apparently the studio went with his first draft and thats what this movie was based off of.
Well thats good, cause I didn’t want there to be. =D
The original Hulk movie opened strong and tanked dramatically the next week. We’ll see if this movie does the same.
I’ll never forgive you, specs. Neither will Dr. B.
I really hope it does. I don’t want there to be a second version of this trash, at least if M. Night Shaymalan is still on board.
I mean, Ang Lee’s Hulk probably was that it started up too slow for popular tastes since people unreasonably expect for the Hulk to take most of the movie rather than the last like hour only. But at least it was otherwise decent, especially compared to The Last Racebender.
I can understand taking out Jet, June and even Momo, but how the hell do you leave out not only Bumi, but the Kyoshi Warriors, who were integral in every season? Wait, did they cut out Jeong-Jeong too?
That said, I also kind of fear that the movie will damage the name of an otherwise excellent series since America tends not to give a fuck about animation, which is why we got this life-action tripe in the first place.
Ugh. Lose-lose.
Bumi wasn’t much of a critical character till the second season. The Kyoshi Warriors actually did get filmed but was cut out. Don’t know why they cut it out. This movie would’ve had more weight to it and cut out the exposition if it was longer like the Harry Potter movies. At least that way thing could be shown instead of talked about.
And I mean never, specs.
Oh, I get that Bumi wasn’t used much until the second season, but by “cut out”, I’m assuming that means they didn’t even MENTION him, which seems rather odd. Did they at least mention the king of Omashu or something? That would kind of vital to the second season in and of itself.
Also, this reminds me. I’m guessing they cut out the Cabbage Guy, didn’t they…
quakes with rage
Garbage.
Tons of exposition, from a dude that proved he knew how to hide it (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable). This is NOT what you do in good storytelling.
Parts that needed to be explained further were rushed.
Parts that didn’t need elaborating – or, indeed, inclusion in the movie in the first place – took up way too much screen time.
The movie adhered to the series formula where it SHOULDN’T have: what works on TV doesn’t necessarily work in a movie, especially a rushed one by a hackjob writer/director/producer.
The movie deviated from the series where it shouldn’t have: what WORKED in the TV series that would have worked in the movie is inexplicably missing.
The humor is all gone. The series had shitty toilet humor and actual funny humor: neither is present.
Katara, my most hated character in the series, at least elicited an emotional response from me in the TV show. Here, I was just indifferent. Towards everyone.
Dev Patel as Zuko was okay, but Patel seemed like he was lost, thanks to M. Night’s idiocy.
Iroh was the best character in this mess of a movie.
Amongst the rare good things about it: the scope of the world, visually, was pretty cool. Locations looked like they should, and special effects were okay.
The soundtrack, on CD/iTunes, is amazing, but in the movie it’s drab and lifeless. Not sure why.
Garbage dialog on top of woefully omnipresent exposition.
This is a bad movie, period, let alone a bad Avatar adaptation. Still better than anything Michael Bay has ever done… but not by very much.
I went with a group where some people have never seen the animated series… and now one of them doesn’t want to. Good work ruining a franchise, M. Night and Avatar creators.
I’m legitimately and honestly pissed off.
If opposites attract, Dr. B and M. Night’s The Last Airbender are a mad orgy of attraction.
you don’t see that as a problem? do you normally pay $15 to read cliffs notes for entertainment?
you usually read cliffs notes because you have an essay due tomorrow, and you’re only on chapter two of the book you’re supposed to have had finished.
but you’re right… the movie was like cliffs notes. it doesn’t pay any mind to conveying themes and relationships, and is comfortable with covering important character development in detached exposition. it cuts out parts they don’t think that are important to preserve time. things like “build up” “foreshadowing” “cause and effect”… normal everyday themes and literary devices used to tell a story theatrically are blatantly ignored. the viewer/reader isn’t engaged. they aren’t entertained. its like information is thrown at them and they are expected to emotionlessly process this information and understand it without experiencing anything fun to watch.
dude, if you liked it, cool… i’m not here to hate. but i’d have to say its semi upsetting knowing that this movie could’ve and should’ve entertained more people if certain steps were taken, such as making a movie instead of exposition > actual dialogue. there’s a reason why people buy and read the real books instead of reading the cliffs notes. and there’s a reason why movies aren’t made based off of the cliffs notes versions of books. i would be okay with DRASTIC storyline changes and having the movie go COMPLETELY HOLLYWOOD as opposed to an emotionless, storyless, poorly acted, poorly filmed money hole.
anyways. here’s something funny:

“Are you saying that in general they didn’t dig it?”
No Mr. Shamalan, they didn’t.
I was just about to post this. Beat me to it.
I don’t know if shamalamadingdong is delusional or not but his “artistic” reasons for why the film isn’t doing well shows why he’s lost followers, he’s missing the picture entirely. (no pun intended)
Reading that interview with Shamalan further cemented my opinion that he was the wrong “artist” for the job.
