Somethings wrong with the torrent for ‘The Blind Bandit’
Ok, fixed.
I’d think other than Air bending, water bending and anything quiet Toph probably has the advantage. That or simply putting her on metal, which apparently fucks up all Earthbenders.
She was the first impressive Earth bender I have seen in a long while, the shit she did with just fucking people’s foot placement is beautfiul. It’s like Daredevil but even worst cause she has the entire ground as her fucking billy club.
I also agree The Boulder did seem like a combination of the Rock and Macho Man, hilarious to watch.
And firebending, since that manifests seperately from the body and doesn’t touch the ground.
The only people she can really fuck are Earthbenders, and anyone without bending skills at all. Offensively, she beats almost everyone-- especially if she just throws a barrier up around herself, and beasts people from inside there. And probably at night-time, too.
Defensively? Garbage. She can’t sense air currents, water-benders detach the water from their bodies, and firebenders shoot shit.
The more I think about this girl, the more she sucks. =/
I think you’re underestimating Toph, that I am quite glad that she has a weakness. (“Death from above!”)
I mean, since I’ve caught up on Season 2 via my roommate burning episodes 3 and 4, I realized that pretty much everyone but Aang has to touch the ground at some point for them to manifest their techniques. Sure, maybe it’s not necessary like with Earthbenders, but even Azula had to touch the ground/stone cart to do her blazing fire wheel thing it seems. (Hell, in that same episode, Bumi proved that Earthbenders don’t have to touch the ground to effect given that he moved earth with his face.)
See above. You’re mostly right, but you’re still underestimating her some.
Given that she dropped several attacks that traveled in air at the episodes’s big fight, like that Fire Nation heel’s dust attack and that guy swinging on the rope or the ring’s managers boulders, she dodge things that come from the air…as long as she feels people touch the ground. (This is perhaps also the factor of her being familiar with Earth-bender forms considering that teacher guy was her private tutor for a while.)
But, yeah, if Azula doesn’t need to change her stance to use her lightning or blue fire*, then Toph/Toff is fucked.
Speaking of that…
And yet you probably still think, rather eeriely if I may say, that she’s still hot (blind) jailbait at the ripe age of 12, no?
Anyway, I quite liked the episode, and the Boulder was so totally a parody of the Rock with Macho Man’s voice.
Oh, and Stabby, remind me to make a post about the supposed “brokenness” of Water-bending now that I’ve seen “The Swamp”. There’s something that I disagreee with you on…
*I’m assuming that her lightning and her blue fire are difference. Or are those the same? I really have to watch the rest of the season 1 episodes…
Yes. Also, after watching the episode again, I realize that I also hate her voice. But she is still hot.
The only ones that have to interact with the ground are earthbenders. When Katara weilds her water-bottle, the actual fluid isn’t in contact with anything but the air. Even if Toph could sense the swaying motions of a waterbender, she would still need to be familiar with the waterbending forms to be able to deal with it.
Firebenders have their source in the breath. While I’m sure that Toph can sense breathing (no sarcasm-- she could feel those ants, remember?) she’d still need to be familiar with the firebending forms/exersizes to defend effectively. For an example, something like Zuko’s fire-daggers that he fought Azula with. A weapon like that, which is basically just energy and can’t be sensed through touch, would fuck Toph as hard as I would.
Nail on the head, in my opinion. And besides, all medium/long-range aerial earthebending is very linear. Even when that guy was ‘summoning’ rocks and kicking them at her, he really could only follow one path with them towards her body.
But, all of this is moot since the series is just going to pretend that she can see, except when it is significant/comedic.
That was a nice episode. The current-time stuff felt a little rushed, but the flashbacks were well done. And that fight was pretty badass.
I was hoping for at least a little bit of Toph and co, though. I mean, she was introduced an episode ago.
Stylistically, I do think the animation budget for the show was increased. It looked smoother, and was in general a nice looking episode. And I also like the direction that Zuko’s hair is taking.
Actually, no. We don’t get a new episode next week. Next week is some Nickelodeon thing. It should be a new episode the week after next Friday.
Also-- every fucking show on Nick (besides Avatar) is terrible. What the hell is this “The Xs” shit?
I’ll upload the torrent when I sees it.
oh snap the new episode just dumped a metric assload of new questions on us
ozai’s a dick, that’s for sure.
Gotta start them young, right?
Yeah, she was exactly the same as she is now, which isn’t that surprising. And yet, it doesn’t seem to come from stereotypical, regal spoiling. While Ozai obviously favors his daughter far more than his son, we didn’t ever see him being affection towards her. The closest we got was the close of the smile when they were in Azulon’s chamber and he asked her to demonstrate.
Anyone else thinking that part of the reason they haven’t shown Ozai’s face is because Zuko’s blocking it out? I can’t imagine I’d like my father if he openly disliked me AND burned the hell out of me in found of a significant part of the nation while I grovelled for mercy.
Anyway, I rather liked the “bleakness” of the episode, and it does definitely bring up a lot more questions, most of them being about what actually happened between the “private” meeting that Ozai had with his father the night of his death. It doesn’t help that “Azula always lies”, but could she have been right about the supposed “punishment” that Azulon supposedly wanted Ozai to exact? If so, then if Ozai did have something to do with his own father’s death, then could have possibly (been partially) to save Zuko? Or does he just really hate Zuko that much that it’s not probable? Still, what are the chances of Azulon’s death being “natural”?
I don’t know…but I know that I liked funeral pyre part for some reason. Probably because of the listing of the names…for some reason.
“Husband of Ila, now deceased.”
shrugs
P.S. Stabby, I also completely agree with your assessment of Toph. What I was trying to point out is that while the other benders don’t need to touch the ground, they most often do, if only do the necessary thing of movement after or while attacking. Hell, as I said earlier, Toph is also somewhat screwed against Earthbenders that can move things without having to stomp the ground or otherwise move, like Bumi in “Return to Omashu” when he moved rocks with his face.
Should be interesting to see…two weeks from now.
I missed a few eps of this season…any seeded you-know-whats for the eps after The Cave, but before The Blind Bandit?
Ugh, Toph fucked me up. I like the loli versions of those girls better than the actual ones. Especially Azula. She has a huge goddamn forehead, present-day. She should try cosplaying as Sakura.
And Zuko’s mom is(/was) hot.
But Azula shows no respect for anyone, except possibly Ozai. She is a bitch to her mom, to Iroh, and to the old Firelord.
I always hate it when the producers of a show hide some character’s face, just for the sake of NOT showing his face. Unless the Firelord turns out to be another character-- which is pretty-much impossible-- then all of this ‘mystery’ is for nothing. And he has been shown before (sans face), outside of flashbacks. Most recent example I can think of was at the end of Season 1 when he told Azula to go get shit done.
But that could be for effect, like you said. I don’t think Ozai ever even looked at Zuko, except for when he burned him.
That was always my take on it, which could be what you mean as well. He simply didn’t realize that his transgression against the general was, in effect, against his father as well. It finally hit him in the ring when he had to face Ozai instead of the general, and so he yielded immediately instead of fighting-- which he felt would have been further insubordination against the firelord.
In my opinion, Zuko doesn’t hate Ozai in the least. He just wants his approval. If he is blocking out the image of his father, then I think it again just ties into respect-- he feels so shamed by his actions that he can’t come to look at the face of his father, even in memory. Check out the episode in which Azula tells him to return home. That isn’t the reaction of someone that hates his father. Even now, in a state of DOUBLE-exile, I don’t think he hates his dad. He gave up on his search for the Avatar, on his search for approval-- and now he is just trying to find his own identity, which is why he left Iroh and is wandering on his own.
As to the meeting between Azulon and Ozai, I ain’t got no clue what happened there. Like Itachi killing the Uchiha clan, I don’t think we have enough information about exactly what happened there. If all of that happened in a single night, then anything could have happened. I heard a theory about Zuko’s mom killing Azulon… which is dumb, but kind of makes sense. It goes with the speech she gave him about the turtle-ducks (COW-PIGS O_o), and if the coup was orchestrated by Ozai…
But it still doesn’t make sense. At least we should get more information on what went down then from Zuko. I think it will be something drastic-- Zuko seems like he’ll be the one to succeed as the new Firelord, which means it’ll have to be something to turn him against his father.
I agree.
As to Toph,
I think that girl can sense any movement, though-- as long as the object moving has some (even indirect) contact with the earth. Earth benders always are in contact with it, unless they are jumping (which she can still manage), or if the earth is being lifted/thrown-- and like I said before, any long-range earthbending is always very linear. From here, we can only see how fine her sense of touch is. That she could sense the ants (which were waaaaaaaaaaaaaay the fuck over there) as independent impacts from the blades of grass, I think she’d actually be able to sense the muscle-shiftings inside of other living things.
Yes, I do think that Bumi would kick Toph’s ass-- but Bumi said himself that he was likely to be the strongest earthbender that Aang would ever meet, and Bumi also seems to know his shit much better than anyone else. Chin-bending must be extremely rare, otherwise they probably would have sealed Bumi up quite a bit tighter.
Rhio,
www.voiea.net/things/avatar
Kinda torrent archives for the episodes. If I was on broadband, I’d perpetually seed them, but they should have seeds anyway. If not, check www.mininova.org with a search for “Avatar”.
Heh. You could replace Insaniac in the pseudo-pedophile department.
Yeah, that’s what I mean.
She’s exactly the same, so it does seem like its the product of regal spoiling. Maybe fraternal coddling, since Ozai called her a “prodigy”, but other than that, we don’t know why she’s like that; you know it’s bad when even her mom doesn’t know why she’s like that.
Nice way of remembering detail. They never showed him face-to-face with Zuko in the last episode, and, indeed, the only face-to-face scene we’ve seen is the Agni Kai snippet.
Yeah. You’re probably right again. It does seem more like shame and respect than hatred given the quote that I found on imdb, apparently from that same episode that you said (which I haven’t seen, since I’ve still only about half of the first season):
Interesting… I’m assuming you’re talking about the whole “If a mother’s child is threatened…” thing. That would make her quotation make sense, and it’s quite plausible. In fact, the biggest question would be how capable could have been against the Fire Lord, apparently one of the strongest Fire Benders (at the time)? We didn’t see her do anything, especially since she seemed more like a (royal) housewife.
Still, that makes sense, at least in connection with explaining Azulon’s simultaneous death, than Zuko’s mom sacrificing herself in her son’s place.
Very interesting.
Agreed, projectile Earth-bending is understandably limited since it’s the only bending style that has solid projectiles, which thus have relatively rigid (ugh, so many puns already) trajectories.
Still, and this is why I thought Earthbenders were broken, wouldn’t she get owned by
Provided that she couldn’t sense the ground changing beforehand.
He did? Hmm…must have been one of the later episodes or else I’m not as observant as you, which is possible.
It makes sense though. Even if Bumi wasn’t as old as Aang was when Aang got sealed, Bumi has at least 110 years of experience when it comes to Earth Bending.
Yeah, I know…this is where I got The Blind Bandit today. The problem is only the last 2 eps are seeded. The rest were “Unable to connect to tracker. Operation timed out.” And the other places only have the eps I want in “Ipod” format, so I’m guessing quicktime. It finally happened, Apple has EARNED my disdain. If not for thier nano, I’d have this shit in avi.
Watch the rest of season 1!
I remember Bumi’s stuff because I’m was a fan. Now my Avatar tiers go something like
- Toph (I’ve watched that episode 4 times)
- Aang
- Iroh
- Zuko
- Bumi
Did you forget how much shit Azula was talking about the old man?
“Grampa isn’t exactly the great firebender he used to be.” etc, etc. Azula seems to respect strength and ambition, and she was hating on Azulon constantly.
What would really be fucked up, is if she killed Azulon, only to have Ozai kill her immediately afterwards.
I don’t think that attacks of that calibur would really phase her. The ability to move underground has been displayed several times-- offhand I can recall Bumi “falling” through the ground during his fight with Aang (coincidentally, the same episode in which he made his strength claim), and more recently the monocle-wearing guy that was burrowing in Toph’s episode.
Offensively, it seems more like a technique to use against the other schools than it does against an accomplished earth bender.
Also, didn’t you say you took issue with my bending school tiers?
Rhio,
Thanks for letting me know. I fixed two torrents-- “Avatar Day”, and “The Swamp” with seeded torrents, and I’ll look for others as well.
Nice point. Still doesn’t mean that he probably wasn’t relatively strong.
Right. That seems like a possible given that your thoughts and the fact that I already thought that Ozai had a hand in her death, if she died of course.
Though, there’s something else that bugs me: If Ozai wasn’t involved, then why did he get the title of Fire Lord after the part we saw where his own father chewed him out about being so cold to Iroh’s loss? This especially bugs me since Azula, thought she “always lies”, didn’t mention as a way of making up for the punishment of killing Zuko.
Meh.
This is more of what I was talking rather than transportation. Anyway, this makes sense, since Earth Benders could un-bury themselves and the like, assuming they had the skills as you say.
Not really a big issue with the tier itself. Merely your interpretation of the episode “The Swamp”.
I still don’t think Water Bending is broken. It’s immensely variable, granted. However, even if can be used to control the water in things, there’s nothing to show this extends beyond (relatively) inanimate things, like plants. There’s nothing show far to suggest that it can actually greatly affect humans besides healing. I emphasize “greatly” because, unless I missed something in the episode after the fourteenth one of Season 1 and that few episodes of Season 1 I’ve seen beyond that, I see healing water as more of an “aid” or acceleration of healing rather than out and out manipulation of the human form.[/run-on]
That was all really.
the theory running around is that Ursa dropped the hammer on Azulon. Azula’s “dad’s gonna kill you” story was true and a mother always has to defend her children, right?
i bet she had a talk with Ozai about that and he probably would’ve let Zuko get the axe too just to keep his position.
the other theory running around is that Azula is a bitch because no matter how awesomely powerful she is, she’s a girl, and they don’t make girls into Fire Lords.
just some theories i heard. but anyway, next week is some Fairly Oddparents junk but the week after that is:
“The Chase”: As the kids are pursued relentlessly by a mysterious machine, their exhaustion puts them at each other’s throats.
But he wasn’t in danger of losing his position, and he really didn’t have anything to gain unless Iroh died as well. Azulon just wanted him to suffer for stepping above himself, or at least that was the way he sounded from what we heard.
Ozai seems like a ruthless, manipulative dick, so I’ll just keep on thinking of him that way.
I was thinking about this.
Outside of main characters, the water healers, and avatars, they haven’t shown any female benders at all.
Toph, Azula, and Katara are the only female combat benders.
Have you drawn any fanart for Avatar yet Zazz?
And Damned,
We’ll see. I was mainly talking about theory. I don’t expect anything vicious from this show, and so all of the benders get nerfed.
