Well, it was a good episode focused on the other characters. It would suck if that business guy is really looking to steal Asami’s business. He’s in business, so maybe he’s scum.
Next week will be the best episode. “Beginnings”
This entire episode I was like, “Man, Varrick has a really crafty business mind. He’d be a legit threat if he were to go evil.” Something about the way he described movies being used to subtly influence people was a little too sly. And lo, there it is.
Also, when I saw Korra at the end I had almost forgotten that she existed. She really wasn’t doing much for the plot and it showed in this episode.
Can someone link me todays episode as well? Had to miss it again sadly.
always check nick
Another great episode. Someone here made a good guess about Varrick. Looking forward to seeing where this goes now.
Spoiler
How much does Zhu Li know? Now that I think about it, she’s probably the one who paid the triads to keep Mako & Asami busy. For all we know, she could be Varrick’s right hand.
Is it me, or is everything set-up to emasculate Bolin. First it’s the controlling and vengeful ex-girlfriend, now he’s playing a character called Nuktuk? LOL!
It really isn’t that far-fetched to see Varrick for who he is. This dude bribes and pays-off people for almost anything, makes jokes about profiting off of wars, and creates war propaganda for children. All of that just adds up to someone who isn’t afraid to use unethical means to stage a manipulative hostile takeover.
Varrick does have a humorous-charm and charisma though, and that makes him seem harmless. But that is what a good villain should be like, it should be someone who camouflage themselves and their motives, someone who throws off enough misdirection personality-wise to not even be remotely suspicious by most standards.
I dislike Mako’s character so when I realized that much of this episode would be focusing on him, I was a bit let down but it was pretty good. Asami probably should get out of the business world, guys seem to lead her on too easily for her at this stage of her life, her pops, Mako and now seemingly Varrick. She is no doubt a great driver/pilot of any vehicle but horrible judge of character apparently. That being said, he had his moments, even though his plan with the mobsters was one that I wouldn’t have expected from the “smart” brother. But then again the idiot ball seems to be changing hands throughout this season maybe it was just his turn, although Lin Beifong keeps having it whenever she shows up on screen this time around since they got back from the South Pole.
Everything else was good, the last scene with Korra, the old school movie effects they used for Bolin’s movie/serial, his inability to tell the difference between reality and the film. Nice time to be had by all.
Spoiler
Yeah, if Varrick is the evil mastermind then no doubt Zhu Li is also in up to her neck. But as a bone for the Varrick fans there is also the potential that he is a red herring and Zhu Li is the REAL mastermind behind the attacks just using Varrick’s name plus tech all while secretly controlling the company.
I’m not seeing how Mako going to the triple threats is a case of him holding the idiot ball. He was running an off the books operation, he has a history with them and exhausted all his available options.
Varrick being the supposed “true” villain of the season is far from being a shocker, it was pretty much hinted since episode 3. It would be cooler if Zhu li was the spiteful mastermind who manipulates Varrick, but new Avatar hasn’t been that good to use such a detailed plot.
Scar going into the spirit realm seems more like he might be getting orders, probably from a Avatar ancestor who has her own agenda and is creating this spiritual ruckus. (Remember the glowing statue that Tenzin’s daughter saw earlier?)
Korra losing her memory serves as a tool to rebuild herself into a new person. She’s going to have to lose everything to become spiritually transcendental, but in the process permanently lose Mako and her “normal” life. Which why we’re seeing Asami with Mako together again, to bond them and create a similar shift that Tenzin and Lin had relationship~wise.
This is also probably why Asami is so likable and trustworthy in the first place, so she can serve as a logical fallback for Mako once Korra makes her sacrifices to “save the world”.
It’s rather sad that I watched this entire episode and never once wondered where Korra was.
Mako is arguably one of the most level-headed characters this season. I didn’t like him in S1, but here he seems like one of the few people that actually puts thought into what they do.

Varrick is a businessman in the most extreme sense. He can and will make money off of anything and anyone if given the chance. Looking at it now, I see him as more of a Chaotic Neutral type as opposed to evil. He just follows wherever the paper trail leads.
I’m honestly not liking how they’re handling Bolin’s character. What are they doing with him? He’s just there for poor comic relief now, but with everyone else tending to more important business, I guess he has nothing better to do.
However, I slightly feel Varrick will simply kill him off for no reason, or at least try to. On that note, poor Asami. The girl basically lost everything and now has her company completely bankrupt by the man who was supposedly helping her without realizing it. I don’t even know what’s going to happen to her, but I doubt it’ll end well for her.
I’m not that surprised that Varrick was a “villain”, but the way the writers handle it was good. They placed most of the focus on Unalaq while Varrick assisted the main characters in rescuing Korra’s father. They’re not much to say about Zhu Li, but as a right-hand man she wouldn’t be of the combatant-type (maybe).
Zhu Li could be a badass bender who just happens to be an assistant. A guy like Varrick would keep powerful people around him since he himself isn’t a bender.
Of course, we could be being fooled by those dirty looks Varrick gave Mako (the writers wanted to trick viewers). The writers couldn’t reveal another villain that easily after Unalaq, could they?
I wonder if Varrick took the remote from the station when he popped up.

I think that statue was Wan
Korra having amnesia is the best thing that could’ve happen to her. She was on the wrong path for too long. She lets her emotions guide her too much to be the Avatar. It’s like the previous Avatars voted and agreed to cause damage to her brain and give her a refresher course on being an actually half decent Avatar.
Here’s a nice interview from NYCC…
- Impossible to believe “villain reveal”. Came out of nowhere, so, bad writing.
- Amnesia… LOL. The only thing the current season needed to finish its metamorphosis into a stupid and cheesy soap opera.
