Avatar: The Legend of Korra - Book 4

This a million times.

Female characters seem to have this problem especially in today’s climate of political correctness. When I first heard korra would be the lead character for this new series I worried she would exist simply to appease the idiot feminist who want more lead female characters. Now mind you I don’t have a issue with female characters but often times they aren’t written as characters…they are written as representations for all womankind.

The unusual thing is that this series has plenty of well written female characters who could easily hold this show as the lead character but for some reason korra is basically just a check list of “female empowerment”. How odd that the checklist includes being a bitch and unlikeable in every capacity.

So because Korra is a multifaceted character she’s no longer a real person? In real life people are made up of a bunch of beliefs and ideals that they believe in so to say she’s a bad character is just stupid to me. It’s why we have so many terrible female character in shows now, because people get bent whenever one has multiple motivations.

Comparing Korra to Chi Chi is too dumb for words, Chi Chi was a useless and intentionally annoying character. Korra is not intentionally annoying but a young character making mistakes in judgement and has valid reasons for doing so. Tenzin and her father keeping her locked up made her miss alot and now that she experiences freedom she’s a little bitter at them for, in her eyes holding her back.

Korra is likable. Korra just isn’t likable around Mako because their actually did force the relationship thing in for the female audience. I think this show would be alot better once Korra goes off on more solo adventures. Her main sidekick being Mako is a problem because it’s only gonna make her look worse because their characters don’t play well off each other at all.

I don’t get fake female empowerment anywhere on this show so far. Just a girl bitter at her father figures because she feels like she missed out imo.

The reason I hate Korra’s attitude is that it shows lack of growth. I can understand burgeoning relationship trouble for teenage girl who has never experienced one and has a “special destiny” (albeit tiresome to watch in a children’s cartoon), but her overall personality traits denotes a reversal of growth to such a degree it seems like her past struggles with her relationships and her fight with Amon never happened.

And her bipolar turnaround to “nice Korra” after making the sky turn into Crayola colors just felt tacky and unresolved.

If they wanted more conflict, they should’ve made it more external; emphasizing the archetypes as well-established and bonded… at least until a real threat surfaces.

@infernoman We both know there’s so much that could be done with other bending styles (Lightning bending to stimulate electrical impulse in muscles, earthbending to break bones due to calcium composition, etc…) but the show has that pesky [TV Y] rating holding it back.

Major thoughts on the new season opener…

-Yeah Korra was on the “crazy nightmare female teenager” characterization that we saw flashes of last season and thought after everything she out grew. This is a turn off but I see they are building her personal arc for the season. Aang was annoying early on and at times as well but he grew out that junk. Korra’s biggest flaw is that unlike Aang, her supporting cast that gets screen time isn’t nearly as strong to over come some of her less then desirable traits, at least toward parts of the intended audience. No idea if females or younger girls relate to the character acting like she does or not.

  • The Uncle better not be behind everything, that is way too easy and cliche. I am expecting a swerve especially since my initial thoughts of the twins or rich guy being evil may be wrong as they didn’t show much outside of comic relief.
  • Bolin pretty much carried the first two episodes outside of action scenes. On one hand, that is good for the character but bad for the show because his comedy shouldn’t be forced to put in this much work. Mako, Asami and the Windbender clan (+non windbender siblings) need to step up. Don’t expect them to suddenly split a majority of the time with Korra (wasn’t really that big of a fan of how much Zuko time the first Avatar gave the character or some of his filler story in the 2nd book) but they are going to need these characters to help take the burden off Korra as Aang had his supporting cast do for much of his series.

Overall, nice but could be better and hopefully will improve as the season goes along. I’m glad the title is the same as before, I set my DVR for this show during the first season and was surprised the day before the premiere to see that it was debuting on Friday and then surprised again to find it was a 2 parter. Technology, I love you.

Then we’re clearly watching 2 different shows cause all I get is a bitchy girl who isn’t likeable nor relatable. She’s a mess of conflicting ideas because she’s trying to be everything to every girl fan of the show…instead of being a well written character defined by some core base values like ang, she instead is the amazo of every female fan fic that existed during the last airbender days.

Whoa people… We’re just one(technically two) episode(s) in and people are already jumping to conclusions.
Yeah, I said Korra is being a bitch*(because she is being one)*, but it doesn’t mean its going to last the whole season. She was fine in Season one, and I’m sure once the kinks are worked out she’ll be fine.

Aang wasn’t always likeable or agreeable either, but he was balanced out by having a much better supporting cast-- Sokka, Toph, Zuko, and yes, even Katara were all much better and well-rounded characters than Korra’s current supporting cast. All Korra has is Naga and Bolin as far as likeable support characters. There’s Tenzin, Lin, and Asami, but they seem as if they’re going to be pushed into backup storylines for the time being…

Which leaves us with the blackhole of charisma, Mako. You’d think with this series’ history of badass and interesting Firebenders*(Zhao, Zuko, Azula, Uncle Iroh*) that Mako would have, well y’know, a character. I’m not ready to throw him off a cliff yet, but dude needs to develop into something more than just “Korra’s Boyfriend”. Bolin is a far more interesting character just by virtue of not being as bland and ‘safe’ as Mako’s character is portrayed as.

Give it some time, guys… Korra will get better as a character. But Mako’s got a limited shelf-life… dude is going into Uchiha Sasuke territory of unlikeable… and you never go full Sasuke.

I think korra has the potential to be a good character but until she moves beyond being a simple fan girl’s wet dream, she will remain as a stale unlikeable cunt.

You know what the worst part of it all is? I know these writers are capable of better. Katara, Azula, Toph and so many other great female characters from the last series. They were real characters that had their own thoughts and attitudes. They had a wide range of different emotions, they even had good days and bad days like real people. Not just the ones I listed, but so many characters, role players right up to the main characters.

And then we get Korra? She doesn’t compare to any of those characters. It’s as you state, they want to push that idea of female empowerment and sell that. It’s like FF XIII pretending that Lightning was the first female lead character ever, when that very same series had one about 15 years prior. They are just pandering to a certain mindless demographic at the expense of good writing or their core audience.

And it never really works. Because that mindless demo is just going to move onto the next new thing. It just doesn’t lead to memorable characters. Normal females aren’t even interested in it, my sister hates Korra. All her favorite characters in video games and anime are female, but Korra comes along and she can’t stand her. In fact, she disliked Korra a lot quicker than I did, as I kept giving her a chance and at this point with this first episode she’s just beyond hope right now.

You can’t give into a vocal minority and write something for them. You have to just have your own vision, and then let the chips fall where they land.

Things are in obvious need for improvement because they’re supposed to get better according to basic storytelling. The issues is, it feels like a waste of an opener if it’s the same issues as last season. That’s the complaint, we didn’t need this shit again.

Bloodbending erectile dysfunction!

Who the fuck gives a shit about tumblr fans?

White Shadow and Wellman always reading my mind and I find myself always posting the same shit they just said, lol.

Agreed on the fact that this series has a reputation for writing great characters, male or female, which is why a lot of people are annoyed right now. Korra took two steps back in her characterization for no good reason other than to set up a rift between her and her father figures and create some fake tension between her and Mako.

We don’t need to waste five minutes per ep on Korra/Mako… If the writers really want to play up some relationship crap it could easily be done with a Bolin/Eska/Asami triangle. I just hope the writers get back on track and focus on the Avatar doing Avatar things rather than wasting time on shipping crap.

I always hated katara but it was for the right reasons…that girl was straight up villain territory sometimes but she also felt like a real "well rounded"person who just happen to be a evil cunt more often then not lol. I think if they played the "fish outta water"and "immature"aspect about korra she could be a sympathetic character we want to see grow and get better…but as it stands she comes off like the worst aspects of last season. Couple this with the worst relationship ever in a animated series and you have a series in which you wanna see the lead character get the shit beat outta them…her disrespectful attitude just makes it worse.

I also do have to wonder how many more girls will eventually get tired of her BS like your sis did. Girls are quick to call other out other girls BS so korra could lose her fanbase if she continues to act like a dumb cunt.

Well ya’ll keep forgetting this show has undergone a rather rocky planning schedule, they had to cut short what they had been planning to do, and then suddenly has to extend well beyond what they had originally planned, mid season of the first run when they had been cut short originally.

Korra’s probably going to regress a bit in characterization cuz they are going to get to do what they had originally planned and delve deeper into her characterization, which they really had to rush through in Season 1.

Give it time before you start sounding like some kind of silly ass fan like Serpent and Repus. Boxing characters after a series premier. smh

Okay, people keep talking about female empowerment but what the hell is Korra doing that has anything to do with that? It’s not like she says she’s as strong as she due to being female or any of that crap.

She’s not trying insanely hard to be a badass. She’s done that a grand total of once, and that was a legitimate plot point. She’s not playing the unfair sex card. She’s bitter at her father and Tenzin for LEGITIMATE reasons. And most of her motivations are understandable.

The ONLY issue most people have with her, or should have with her, is her interactions with Mako. THAT’S IT. Without that, Korra’s a fine character. What they need to do is what’s been said a couple of times already. Get her away from Mako. Get her out on her own, or with different characters. Have a complete cut from her love life for a bit. Let her focus on being the Avatar.

Aang also had issues and annoyances when it came to his love life but those issues were a lot more spaced out and a lot less intrusive to the series. The problem with Korra’s is that they throw it in our faces every episode. THAT’S the issue. Mostly because we don’t give a damn about it. We want to see her grow as an Avatar. I don’t want to see her endlessly bitch at Mako. It also doesn’t help that Mako is inherently boring and a douche.

TL;DR: Korra’s a fine character…as long as Mako isn’t around to drag her back down by association.

Yea but even that’s tied into the rocky planning the series has had, Mako never really got the chance to do anything in season 1 that would have built his character. I don’t really think that’s his or anyone’s elses fault (Aside from the higher ups at Nick for dicking around with what they wanted to so with the show for so long).

I refuse to call anyone a crappy character until they’ve actually had real screen time to actually do something and have time dedicated tot hem to actually grow.

Dude for real.

Maybe korra could be decent but mako is one of the defining characters in korra’s development…we’ve seen korra grow mainly out of her relationship with mako which is just fucking painful to watch.

The show basically has 2 Uchiha Sasuke like characters and both happen to be the main series. Could you imagine if young justice had lagoon boy as the main character or if bleach was lead by Tousen…

Just watched the premiere…oh man I didn’t realize how much I missed/loved this show until dat intro, also GDLK episode. Really funny writing as usual, that eccentric business dude is my favorite
I agree Korra has the right to bitch at Tenzin for being overprotective and confining her especially since he lied to her about “Aang’s orders” but she was unnecessarily bitchy at Mako, although unlike the rest of you I’m cutting her some slack because all teenage girls are bitchy and PMS’y so hopefully she’ll grow out of it. We all know by the end of the season she’ll learn to appreciate Tenzin and Mako more and be at least slightly less bitchy. Definitely too early to call it, but that’s the point of predictions, I don’t think the Tarlock looking dude is evil, I actually agree with him he seems to personify the moral voice of reason and the rest of the water tribe are stand ins for typical greedy, selfish, consumerist Americans who are too inwardly focused and let their culture wane.

Bolin brings up an interesting point: If you’re attracted to a girl who has an identical twin brother does that make you any more/less gay than a guy willing to fuck a girl with another guy fucking her at the same time?

Which is why Korra should go off doing solo things while Bolin and Mako do things together. We barely have any show of their brotherly bond. I want to see how these guys operate more often when Korra isn’t around. They both need more shine away from her and it would also delve into their backstory a bit more most likely.

Real girls are not this annoying…if they were this cunty then every boy would become gay by simple virtue of avoiding that shit.
