When I bought it I knew it was not going to be that great but I recalled having fun with fatal fury 1 and 2 special. So I was hoping this game to be similar.
I feel AOF was SNK’s rough rough draft which eventually lead us to fatal fury, king of fighters, samurai shodown ect…
No matter how bad I suck at playing AOF I can’t help feel a determination to complete the game. Once I reach that goal, I don’t think I would play it again for a while.
Ok, so I played AoF 1 last night for about 2 hours.
Now, I’m not an AoF fan, nor did I really like this game before buying it (I only did it to support fighting games), but I have to admit, it was pretty damn fun!
I remember playing it when I was younger in the arcades - and I remember hating it because I thought street fighter 2 had way better controls. But now that I go back to this game, I’m noticing a lot of things that are pretty bad ass; considering it was released in 92 (?). Things, like dashing, taunting, super/special meter (of chi meter?), camera angles, were all pretty innovative for its time.
And the music is great! I don’t even think I had it set to “arrange” last night either. I’d have to go back and check.
Can’t wait to give AoF 2 & 3 another try.
Anyways, if you haven’t already picked up this game, I’d highly recommend it. If not for the fun of it, at least do it to support SNKP so they’re more inclined to release other games.
I finally beat AoF2 the other day, the CPU is an ass-kicking machine in that game (honestly, the clumsy controls don’t help either). In the end, I guess it’s just like any other ber-difficult old-school fighting game – it’s really not about trying to play the game well, it’s all about finding and exploiting cheap patterns. For example, I was pulling my hair out against Mr. Big until I realized you can simply walk backward and poke him to death. After that, I defeated him in two rounds straight and didn’t get hit once.
BTW, went to EB today and almost bought KoF 2006 for $15, but dammit, DragonQuest VIII for the same exact price was just too irresistible to pass up.
Yeah I was finding small tricks too. Like when I jump off the wall against temjin, temjin suddenly does his flying super man thing where I can then hit him from behind.
It reminds me of street fighter 2 against zangief where you can just keep jumping kicking in the corner until zangief is defeated.
Aigle’s “White Doe” finisher is the bombest wrestling finisher ever. She body slams you on your fricking head with a dull thump. Awesome. Rumble Roses had the potential of really being a quality female wrestling franchise…but, it took a bad turn. Now the series is ruined forever. Too bad.
I know what you mean. For me AOF 2 is about beating the CPU by any means necessary. The controls are kinda clunky and tedious sometimes…but there’s a strange enjoyment I feel getting owned by the computer. I put it on the highest difficulty, chose Ryo/Temjin, and got jobbed by Eiji for about an hour. At first, I honestly thought I would never beat him. Ever. None of his moves are punishable. It’s ridiculous, really.
But, after a while, I started learning his patterns and stuff, and I got used to the game. And, when I finally beat his cheap @$$ it was satisfaction defined. Heck, I thought Temjin(sp) was a throw-away character when I first picked him. But, his crouching strong punch is NICE, he has a muscle buster (way before Tekken’s King got it), and his win poses are stupid. So, he’s like my favorite character now.
For me, AOFA has turned out to be more enjoyable than expected…
Yeah, I’m already kicking myself for not picking it up, it’s not like spending an extra fifteen bucks would have killed me. Oh well, there were plenty of copies left, I’ll more than likely get it this weekend.
AoF1: Nostalgia’s sake only. Garbage command interpreter, trash system, but it looked good for it’s time. Spirit system hurts the game. This was the first game to introduce supers iirc.
AoF2: Broke shit but has a unique buffering system (tap down + BBBD and Robert will do the complete chain even if you tapped it out way before he actually completed the first kick). Once again the garbage spirit system hurts the game, and the buffering system makes what should be 1 frame links as easy as pie.
AoF3: Pretty and has some cool stuff with the chain combos. Garbage spirit system that is trademark of the series. Also the damage factor is way too high, a lot of characters have easy 60% damage bnbs.
Thankfully these characters managed to at least make it to better games (hi kof98/2002/XI) because the series they came from sucks balls.
Aof2/3 are playable to some extent though, but your mileage will vary.
AoF3 in arcade also had a system where if it was your character’s birthday that character got upgraded damage and slight changes to their moves (kind of like kof98). No idea if that got ported over with the game.
So long does it take any of you to finish art of fighting 2? I was playing it for like 3 hours and almost finished it (mind you I died uncountable times)
Unfortunately it was time to eat so I had to stop playing.
