Dismissing all my nostalgic feelings for this entire franchise, my big issue with the prequels is that they’ve basically framed David as the main character without actually developing him properly. Seriously just make a damn movie where characterization is conveyed through competent writing. Fassbender is carrying this whole thing for me. His character feels like 10% script, 90% him.
wut
I do agree he is the main character of the prequels but how do you not see development rofl. He was ironically the most “human” character on Prometheus ship (bar Shaw and the black captain), was seen checking everyone’s dreams, curious about creation/existance, even “proud” when the Engineer was touching him (before the attack ofc). The first scene of Covenant in particular further strengthens these points. Idk what you have watched.
Went with my brother who’s a big Alien fan who hates Prometheus. He loved it, whereas right now I just want to run up to Ridley Scott and do this

Why Ridley? You set so much up with Prometheus and you do this…
I will write my thoughts later when I’ve calmed down…
$ 36 Million first weekend in the US.
In comparison
Prometheus - $51 M
AVP 1- $38 M
Everyone’s saving their money to go see Wonder Woman.
Crazy enough it actually looks better then this.
I am once again happy that Ridley Scott isn’t directing Blade Runner 2049.
I wanna see Scott directing a new sci-fi project. He does a good job but I feel for example on this movie there was a lot of stuff going on from his point of view, the fanbase, the “haven’t watched any alien movie” regulars, studio execs, etc
Just want a fresh, no pressure, no expectation sci fi movie from him
It already made more than its money back from the worldwide boxoffice, which in itself is a great sign because for better or worse at least we will get the whole story.
Good news. Maybe Blomkamp will get his chance to direct an Alien movie now…
Blomkamp is done for. Long live the new flesh!
(I see, Daemos. For the record, I’ll probably watch Covenant eventually. I just highly doubt I’ll watch it in theaters now.)
That said, yeah, the “prequel” trilogy will likely to get finish from a purely monetary angle since as long as you open in China nowadays, then even the shittiest movies can make bank overall thanks due to it and other overseas markets. That’s why got so many of those terrible Transformers movies, after all, and while any vague desire I had to see this movie in theaters has effectively been killed by the majority of reviews in here, I doubt that Covenant is quite as bad as any of those; I may well be wrong on that point though.
Regardless, at this point, the only reason I could see the Prometheus trilogy not finishing up (on time) if some massive development issues like the ones that plagued Alien 3 happen again.
Yes, I have enough IQ to know that “around that time” is utterly vague. Hence why I am asking you to be more specific, @locoghoul, only to instead receive a smart-ass answer that doesn’t exactly help your case.
Do you mean just 2012 itself? Or also the years it’s in-between? Or an even broader scope given some people would interpret “around that time” as anything up to a decade before it? It is, unsurprisingly, unclear.
Even if we are just counting 2012, which I would say was generally a weak year for (non-franchise) movies from what I remember off the top of my head with relatively few exceptions, then I can indeed think of at least half of dozen sci-fi movies better than Prometheus that came out that year even if I discount the (good) superhero ones like The Avengers and Chronicle: Dredd (though technically a “comic book” movie), Cloud Atlas (supposedly good despite its white-washing problems), Looper (though admittedly from what I understand, I would dislike this film too), Robot & Frank, Grabbers, and John Dies at the End. I’m sure there are other sci-fi movies from “around that time” I would also say were better than the Prometheus we got stuck with, though, again, I would have to know exactly what time you’re talking about to make any further comparisons.
I don’t even understand why you’re getting defensive about this instead of just clarifying what you meant. You’re allowed to like Prometheus regardless of anyone else’s opinions after all; I just personally think it was ultimately an abomination on every level except a visual one, which doesn’t make up for anything.
Damned, why don’t you post in the lounge anymore?
I implied 2010-2012. I didn’t know you’d count Dredd or Avengers as sci-fi lol
It wasnt bad.
I was more pissed off about the idiotic characterS. That scene with the two demales doe, lofl, women reactions to stress!
They need to expand or explain more, this had way less implicit information to build assumptions on.
Why wouldn’t you count Dredd as Sci Fi?
it’s a cop movie that happens to happen in the future. Nothing sci-fi except perhaps the slo-mo. Like take away the helmets and is your typical 80s LA cop movie (not implying it sucks because of that)
This is why Blomkamp’s Alien movie was cancelled before we saw Covenant. Ridley knew that Covenant would completely wipe out Blomkamp’s idea of an Alien planet inhibited by different types of Eggs and facehuggers. Covenant even wipes out most of the ideas in Aliens because now we need an explanation for the purpose of the Alien queen.
I was looking back on my predictions of Alien Covenant and this is what I said 15 days ago:
[details=Spoiler]I bet David and Walter switch places at some point during the film.
[/details]
The trailers made it far too obvious. That’s another thing, Ridley needs to stop putting all the best parts of his films in the trailers.
I’ve heard at least 8 people say the exact same thing since Covenant was released and I feel exactly the same way. I hope he has zero involvement on this film, especially on the script. Ridley was heavily involved in writing the script for Covenant. Originally the engineers were supposed to be using the Aliens as a bio weapon to wipe out all human life but Ridley thought it would be far more interesting if [details=Spoiler]David created the Xenomorphs.[/details]
That’s all you found wrong with the stupid characters?
By the way pedoviejo, i have this Alien egg over here that’s recently started to open. Go ahead, put your face right up to it. I assure you, it is completely safe.
I wouldn’t say I agree with that. The Megacity setting, the lack of cops to cover the crime, the cops having the power of judge, jury and executioner.
I dunno that’s almost like saying Blade Runner isn’t Science Fiction, just a cop movie about a dude hunting fugitives.
Alien Covenant was sci-fi shlock. The irony that Ridely Scott started this series and now, because of him, it’s almost no better than the HighLander franchise.
We had a few really good movies 31 years ago and, it’s been total garbage ever since. But we keep coming back like a battered housewife, hoping things will be different. Only to continue getting punched in the eye repeatedly.
It’s like an episode of cops when they respond to domestic abuse call, the Alien fanbase is like:
Fans: “Ah can’t leave him, ahh lovvve him!”
