Alien Covenant / Prometheus / Aliens / AvP / Discussion Thread

Lawrence of Arabia is not a movie for youtube. You need to see that on the screen and hopefully in 70mm. An 8k digital restoration is going to be released this summer and some theaters will supposedly be getting actual prints.

since those 2 guys were on an alien ship and were stuck there for god knows how long, it wouldn’t surprise me that 1 of them will worry that trying to escape the alien cobra will disturb the equilibrium of the ship further and excite the cobra possibly exciting many of it’s family by running away, who knows how far these dudes travel, especially since theres new game

I think people are too hooked up on “do that, no don’t do that” try to put yourself in these characters place, try to feel the dynamics of what is happening

ugh, I know it’s only opinions and speculations but of all the scenes in the movie this was by far the stupidest and most clichéd.

If the Biologist had shown curiosity throughout the movie, ie not pussy out as soon as he saw a dead alien body, it would have been fine. Wanting to touch the snake is something I would have expected from Charlie, he had that alpha male personality and level of curiosity (as proven by taking off the helmet).

You’ve travelled though space for 2 years in the hope that you find alien life, now that you’ve found evidence of alien life the first thing you do as a biologist is pussy out of doing your damn job. But when it comes to dealing with alien snakes, try and say hello.

Which is more scary, a 2000 year old corpse or a living breathing alien cobra?

Snakes don’t have ears. Cobras are hypnotized by the movement of the flute, the music is there to entertain the crowd.

As I’ve already pointed out, humans as a species have always been fearful of snakes. I would not be debating this scene if the Biologist had displayed a similar level of curiosity as the rest of the crew. It would have been better if just the Geologist freaked out and then in order to calm him down Biologist decided to take him back to the ship but then got lost.

anyhoo

Before movie was released I thought Vickers was an android, now after watching the video review sexperienced posted, I’m sure she’s an android. The way she is killed off is actually quite clever because if she were an android Ridley could still be functioning. Weyland Yutani would be able to salvage a very detailed report from her memory. Theron could also be in the sequel.

The biologist just lost his damn mind. That’s the explanation I’m sticking to for, admittedly, the movie’s worst point. At least it led to a cool death scene, but why the hell did the other guy come back as the zombie and not simply have his face melted from the acid and melted space helmet that was on his face?

On the Lawrence of Arabia connection: I assume it resonates with David because Lawrence is also a misunderstood figure who is manipulated by his leaders and has issues deciding who or what cause he truly serves.

It’s evident that the goo builds upon the current DNA, so you could speculate that he was only dead for a few seconds it brought him back to life. One could also speculate David with his android eyes was able to see this in the sample he collected that the goo was capable of doing such things, and for the sake of Weyland it needed to be tested.

Did anyone else notice David’s reaction when sniffed some of the residue from the control panel? When it was in-between his fingers you could see the green sparkly mist, when he sniffs he his head jolts back. When I first saw this I thought this was the point that David goes crazy like Ash. But I think David downloaded a lot of data, after this he is able to understand how all the holograms, doors and systems work on the ship.

That acid blood shit went through three decks of the Nostromo in less than a minute. Your face is toast if it touches it, homie!

Anyway I would have figured that the black goo simply smelled like shit - or at least like what you may expect preserved, highly concentrated parasitic DNA to smell like.

It was proto-acid blood :smokin:

I don’t think it would smell of anything, if it did then that would make it partially airborn, I don’t think that would have been healthy for anyone.

I hope that, if there is a part 2, we get some insight into David’s motivation or a rescue crew (or whatever plot device that goes back to LV 223) finds him.

That would be kind of a cool setup. Instead of Shaw just landing on the Space Jockey homeworld and saying ‘here I am,’ we see a mystery as to where she went, and what the full significance of LV 223 was.

it is now.

They’re probably all dead. She’ll probably just land on Xenomorph home world, now that would be pretty fucking scary

I think it’s pretty obvious that the Xenos are just one of many of the things that the Space Jockeys invented. IE they are part of the Fire that Prometheus gave us, and can be used to destroy ourselves or someone else, but that’s about it. Is there anything else that could have been useful? It seems like David was just interested in harvesting bio-weapons and becoming a real boy, and learned all of the super-advanced technology of the Space Jockeys just to advance those ends, and wasn’t interested in studying those technologies for their own sake.
…Thats if the creature implanted into the biologist by the space cobra doesnt get to her first, because it was still in the ship.
In the early draft of the script I read, she was an android.

But then again, in that draft Shaw was still a virgin, and Charlie raped her when she got pregnant.

As it stands, the way the movie was actually realized, I think Vickers was a real girl.

The whole point of the way she was, served the plot as a contrast to David.

In the beginning, she is cold, emotionally non-existent - pure “business”, if you will. Throughout the movie this is fairly well maintained . But then at the end, it falls, in the face of everything else falling apart (enter her realizing what the captain is going to do, and her mad dash for the escape pod).

I think her composure throughout the movie is due to her upbringing. As the child of a trillionaire. Of course she believed everything would go her way… that reveal actually served to explain her attitude perfectly.

Of course, the most damning evidence of her humanity, is her death scene. No lateral movement, let alone thinking.

David would have spun ninety degrees and run out of the giant alien space craft’s way.

Interesting changes to the script.

Good point about the evidence of her humanity, it makes sense. But part of me still wonders if David (and if Vickers were to be an android) is really 1st generation.

That was the same ship that they brought down though. We see Shaw leave with David to get another ship.

um the biologist had no idea about the origins of that cobra, those HUGE corpses were running away from something and heading TOWARDS (for their life) where they found the COBRA

I think they were more scared of what the huge “god” like aliens (who are millions of years advanced) were running away from, which was obviously not where that cobra was.

personally I think the engineers didn’t like that humans made an android, they probably see androids as a curse on the universe, everything the engineers handled was biological. this idea works with the title being Prometheus

though looking at the fact that the dude commited hari kari at the start and there being pictures of engineers all looking quite spiritual theres a chance their mission was to stop science. maybe the engineer at the start was a head scientist and his genes unknowingly distributed and created the human race.

I could go further with this

I think you’ve mudded up the sequence of events. They watch the hologram, find the body, they ID the body to be 2000 years old, Geologist and Biologist freakout and leave Shaw & Co to enter the locked room. A few hours later Scooby and Shaggy who were too scared to venture into the room decide it’s a good place to spend the night… they die.

It’s the same place because Shaw & Co didn’t close the door after they left, the black goo has now completely turned to liquid, the maggots that dragged in from the outside by Shaw and co have no mutated into cobras

They ID the body to be 2000years old, someone of the crew members even comes to the conclusion whatever they were running from must have long since gone because it happened 2000 years ago.

Therefore you could conclude that whatever the Engineers were running from 2000 years ago wasn’t giant snakes. Since there were a bunch of bodies with their chest blown out, it’s most likely alpha build xenos.

Even if you look at the space cobra as potentially being the lesser of 2 evils, that doesn’t mean you try to pet the fucking thing. Especially not when it’s hissing as you in an unfriendly manner. There’s really no point in trying to defend that scene…

Looking back at the scene with Vickers and Shaw trying to run away from the rolling ship in a straight line, there were giant chunks of debris falling off to the sides of the ship. Running in a straight line no longer seemed like the most terrible of ideas to me, but whatevs.

i haven’t watched the movie for yeears, but i watched alien and aliens last night, oh man…

when they find that engineer ship on LV426 where they find those eggs of the face huggers.
you see where the seat of the engineer piots, his stomache busted open…
is that a engineer… or is it shaw?..
i have no idea. and how did all those xenomorphs eggs exist on those ships.
how did even that engineer space craft crashed there on LV426?

but this is what i think, the weyland corporation all know about this alien shit.
and they’re the ones that originally set the crew there on purpose for the distress signal. of course they didn’t tell the crew their corporate interest.
and it was the android ash’s motivate to go and investigate and he was protecting and trying to bring back the specimen. the puzzles are getting tighter people. the weylands interest in the xenomorphs become very evident in the 2nd and 3rd movie.

i really need to see the sequel to prometheus.

edit:
actually, when i think about it.
in alien, after some of the crew go investigate the engineer’s space craft. ripley found out that the distress signal was actually a warning, instead of a SOS.
so, i dunno… who ever the pilot was to the space craft, their stomach was ripped open from a xenomorph…

Um pretty sure it didn’t implant anything, from what I remember it had bored out his brain and was just relaxin in his skull.

Yeah people are afraid of snakes. Not everyone though.

That’s what I can’t understand about you guys, you imagine a world where there aren’t people that would do something like that.

I just want Ridley to come out and say David was trolling, that’s all. Could easily forgive the film’s shortcomings if I heard that.
