Alien Covenant / Prometheus / Aliens / AvP / Discussion Thread

They wanted to top the original Alien scene. IMO it’s the best scene in the entire film. You guys are making a mountain out of a mole hill.

If I was going to make complaints about the scene, I would have asked what happened to voice command? why is everything touch screen? what happens if you lose your arm? How the hell did a two prong surgical arm keep hold of a slimy squid? If Elizabeth told the system that there was a contamination, why wasn’t there a system in place that could detect lifeforms. If a Kinect can tell difference between a dog or a cat from a human being why wasn’t there some sort of system that could detect lifeforms on board (especially since the whole point of this journey was to discover new lifeforms). Why did we only bring, pistols, shotguns and flame throwers, what happened to Automatic Rifles and headshots? How did the engineer know where to find Elizabeth but not know about the squid she just gave birth to?

IMO these are bigger issues

No proper scanning/mapping of the planet (even 70s startrek had probes)
First place they land they hit the jackpot
Fashion hasn’t changed in 80 years.
Charlie taking his helmet off was completely illogical.
Cobras don’t like being petted.
Why does nobody close their mouths when attacked.
Captain Janek and his co-pilots become Earth’s saviours despite not showing any of the character traits of heroes (10second discussion on the ramifications of bringing a alien onto the ship doesn’t count - THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A GOOD TIME TO TELL HIM THERE IS ONE ALREADY ON THE SHIP).
Captain Janek coming to visit Elizabeth to see if she is up for some rebound sex disguises it by talking about Weyland’s plan to wake up the Engineer. I think this was the first time they even talked face to face, why didn’t he go to Vickers? Janek and Vickers had more of a connection.
Trying to parry a million tonne spacehip instead of side stepping.
Limited budget for Guy Pierce’s makeup.

I thought about the fashion too, but then you can just say they are just jackets made of super warm new material. I mean how much will warm coats change in 80 years? Expedition coats still pretty much look the same from the 1930s.

It was funny how he was like “I CAN TAKE MY HELMET OFF!” and then everyone else was like “LETS DO IT TOO!”

lol after i read that i immediately thought of a scenario:

ship starts rolling forward and everyone thinks Vickers is about to die horribly

suddenly she starts parrying it and the theater crowd goes INSANE evo style

Theater Crowd: “Wooooooo!!!”

12 minutes later after 14,230 successful parries she misses one and…

SPLAT!

Theater Crowd: “Awwwww”

Lone Guy in back: “Why didn’t she side step?!”

That scene actually kinda gives David psychic powers. He’s the one who encouraged him to do it, just in case he would find something to infect him with and they would all blame it on him retardedly taking his helmet off. The perfect crime! Take that, space Columbo!

…we need a gif!!

It’s not psychic, he is a computer. Remember this is 2090, just imagine how insanely powerful his processor would be using Moore’s law.
I agree on the David being an android probably not mattering, besides, he needs to be around to communicate with them in the future probably
I saw the xenomorph in the mural, I was trying to figure out what was above it the picture, just some random stuff or some clue if it was another creature.
When David tripped the pod, the mural changed too…looked like a map of the area where the domes were located going from black to something more to how it looked on the outside.[/details]

Shaw post op sequence, David

Spoiler

This is where I had the most problems with the movie. Shaw does hit some kind of purge thing on the chamber where it gases the alien creature, hits herself with those stimulant packages or whatever they are 3 or 4 times which is the attempt to write off the damage she just took, then stumbles into the chamber where Weyland is being woken up so he can go meet the engineer. It goes from there right to Shaw zipping up into the space suit(it’s the same thing as Sunshine, the guy gets cut, uses the vest to stop the bleeding). Shaw might be ripping her staples, but the suit is holding her together, or at least that’s the attempt to explain it
While she’s suiting up, Janek comes in half suited up in the same type of suit. Right there it felt like there was large sequence of dialogue just missing, like there had been the reveal of Weyland to the crew, his intent, Shaw’s revelation to the rest of the crew of what happened and her having a big scene explaining what she thinks all this actually for, and that Janek makes his deduction about the stuff being a WMD. Why else would Janek suit up again after what happened with Holloway and Fiefeld unless he thinks Shaw is right and knows she’s too fucked up to go back out by herself?
No mention of the alien in the pod is a bit wonky, but once it’s revealed Weyland and co are going to wake the Engineer, Shaw’ got bigger problems than her staples and the baby…but honestly, if they had just had the pod surgically sew her back together, viewers would have accepted her quick recovery better, those staples made that shit look painful.

I still don’t get why people don’t understand David’s motivations. He’s trying to be accepted as part of the human crew, practices doing human behavior when everyone’s sleeping, tries to interact with the crew and gets shit on alot by Holloway, but at the same time Weyland is giving him orders to push farther and faster. He has the conversation with the cryotube and the hallway scene where Vickers asks what he said, which I thought was a pretty obvious clue that Weyland was on board. He reported his findings with the pod to Weyland, and Weyland’s response was “Try harder”. So he infects Holloway, taking the next step.
He calls Vickers mother, has the line about children killing their parents…he wanted to be accepted, but kept having to do shit that put everyone in danger until Weyland was killed made him twitchy, but at the same time, he’s driven by curiosty. When he infects Holloway you can’t really tell if he’s just out right curious to see what happens, or if he’s going to enjoy seeing what happens. That’s why Fassbender is being so heavily praised, it’s all generally ambiguous. When Weyland dies, he’s free from that conflict, helps Shaw.

Why would Weyland pretend he’s dead? Because he fucking can. Better to be non presence to the crew than become a liability in his state…wouldn’t that be the thinking of a Paranoid rich asshole?

Millburn messing with snake/facehugger…I think the scene where everyone takes their helmets off kind of messes this up, he’s probably under the assumption that he’s protected in his suit. Why does Kane look in the egg in the original Alien after they found an Engineer with it’s chest exploded outward?

Some sequel speculation and interesting read on some of the plot elements, straight from Scott and Lindelof.

David wasn’t doing random shit.

Ash and David were far more concerned with the aliens than passenger safety, Alien wouldn’t have happened if Ash hadn’t been in the fucking room during the chest burster scene. He’s the reason they didn’t kill it there and then.

Both Ash and David were following separate orders, undoubtedly Ash’s orders were probably even more specific after prometheus, everyone saw the end of the credits right?

The chestburster coming out of the Engineer? That happened before the credits where I saw it, but somebody else said it was after the credits. Was there something else? My bro didn’t want to sit through the credits so I didn’t get to see
i just saw it.

i had mixed reactions. ridley scott did a fantastic job with the cinematography, it was a beautiful, sharp, realistic movie

but the plot itself, while good at it’s core, felt lacking in some areas.
i think it could have been done a little bit better.

I don’t think David was any kind of android Model #, like Ash or Bishop. He was specially made and I think he had his own motives. That would tie in with the Space Jockeys going berserk because humanity created another life form that had free will.

when you’re in extreme life or death situations, people react differently

a lot of times your body doesn’t have time to waste with psychological problems and your ‘feelings’. it’s life or death.

and i think she knew for sure it wasnt human, especially after she finds out her BF had alien AIDS.

I mean look at how fucking frantic she was to get that thing out of her body. She’d seen what it did to her lover, it probably didn’t feel like a baby at all, but rather some sort of virus or infection.

Finally…a GOOD review. That’ll show the naysayers:

that review was so accurate, it had to be posted twice

I am convinced that RedLetterMedia guys know more about movies than every studio executive in Hollywood.

it probably felt like the ultimate shit brewing

What the hell are his orders? OK lets assume that what your saying is true, David’s only concern is to preserve the alien specimens. Why isn’t he coming after Shaw after she has her c-section? Wouldn’t he want to put that tentacle thing on ice? And wouldn’t David try and stop Vickers from frying Dr Takeshishelmetoff since he’s some kind of guinea pig? Why doesn’t he just infect the entire fucking crew? Why does he bother waking up the engineer and communicating, just inject him with some black oil shit and see what happens instead.

Now that would be random shit.

Did you miss the part where he had the two come in to take Shaw for cryosleep? He just didn’t get his own hands dirty, he had to see to the old man.

Also, David still had the black stuff on ice. The guy he infected was just revenge pure and simple.

At the end of the credits you see the weylon icon and it basically says that the movie you just watched came out of their video archives.
