you sound like one of those guys who gets testy when people say “Sci-Fi” instead of science fiction.
just poking fun, but really these days I think most people would consider science fiction to just be stuff that involves space, futuristic technology, etc. I’m not exactly sure what you consider it
unless you watch dark city or matrix, which doesnt really have to do anything with space; yet dark city at the end has space. Though most of the movie doesnt really talk about it
guy pearce? I’m sold. I loved memento. he’s probably the most physically attractive male actor in the world, in my opinion. no homo
I’m torn on the pg13 issue. it’s possible to make a smart, quality horror film without getting an R rating, but said film would be even better if it had an R-rating.
The writing for this is pretty good in my opinion. I like the usage of eponymously and the little things about the Eagle ripping through the stomach of prometheus, the good analogy with the fire burning T.E. Lawrence’s fingers, etc
i enjoy pg-13 movies. gore is not scary in the slightest and it does nothing for me. the ring was awesome. it used creepy environment and imagery to achieve its scares. i’m a fan of stuff like that. movies such as evil dead were not scary because of the gore, they are scary because they build up suspense and discomfort. evil dead 2 while a horror comedy, still managed to achieve some scares in the exact same way. gore and nudity in movies are dumb, i have fps for the former and porn for the latter.
i just watched woman in black and really enjoyed it because of its pg-13 rating. i’ve watched way too many rated R horror movies over the years and they are all awful. F-
While I agree that gore in horror movies is a bit overdone, almost comical when there is too much, but the right amount can add to the movie. For example, the chest burster scene in Alien wouldn’t have been nearly as impactful if it had a PG-13, no gore, version.
While it does kinda suck that the movie is pg-13 ill let it come out before I get all worried. I mean I know this isn’t the best comparison, but the dark knight(insert eye roll here) managed to keep things raw and awesome while still being pg-13. Sure were not getting any chest buster scenes in this, but id you don’t need gore to make shit tense or scary I think. In fact, considering how a lot of “horror” movie rely more on gore than anything else for their scares, id actually prefer a pg-13 movie to a certain extent.
Of course, I could be wrong and the movie turns out to just be a generic summer blockbuster, but I wouldn’t lose all hope cause its PG-13.
yeah there are some gore scenes which are great. murphy being shot up to pieces in Robocop. dude getting dismembered at the end of The Audition. chest burst scene in alien like you mentioned. joe pesci getting pwned at the end of Casino. those were emotionally powerful kills though. most of the time its meh. i’m into good storyline and character development so if a death scene serves that end and gore can make it more powerful then great. most of the time its just comical like you said.
maybe you should stop watching Sci-Fi and that will solve your problems, jk. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was pretty good other then that Avatar was ok I guess
The effects in The Matrix have been done to death. The wow factor just isn’t there anymore. The philosophy is shallow and has been better handled in other films like Terminator 2 or Ghost in the Shell. It’s a very dumbed down existentialism that could be summed up as “Reality is what you make of it, let’s watch some kung fu!” and that offends me that people think it’s something more when it really isn’t.
Once you get past the effects and philosophy not much is left but a pretty interesting first half but after that it’s mostly carried by Hugo Weaving and Fishburne. The sequels are a joke.
Maybe I dislike it partly because it’s become so popular and there’s the inevitable counter-culture to something that big but on the whole it’s a very shallow experience clearly defined as a late 90’s fad.
Also: when you’re in the Matrix and you can dress however you want and that would represent your inner id, why is everyone practically dressed the same? 1 or 2 people into leather and business suits, okay. But why is everyone dressed in leather and sunglasses? Wouldn’t there be people who would dress casually so they could blend in when they’re in the matrix, or people who have a far more radical id?
I totally agree. Well, almost. I actually don’t think the the Matrix sequels are that bad because looking back I don’t think the Matrix story is that interesting or unique (as you said). So as the story turned increasingly convoluted and inconsistent it didn’t bother me much. They at least continued to up the ante with the effects which is the most endearing part of the Matrix to me today.
And now that I’m older, the goofy leather goth raver style that they all adopt just looks incredibly lame.
