so whats the turnout looking like for this friday? I’m down for going, but would like to get this planned ahead of time so it’s not another “nobody posted they’re going so I’m not gonna go” friday. Nate if you want a ride, lemme know…as well as anyone else in the area. Not sure where everyone lives here but if we could carpool a few people and ride out like we first did with jose/yosh it would probably be easier and more $$ efficient for everyone. Let me know if this sounds like a good idea to anyone.

I’m down like a drowned clown. I’m itching to see if I’ve improved at all.

I think we have a very different set of friends. Arcana was a pretty big joke with most of the people I talked to at Evo. It has too many hurdles to break through to even reach Guilty Gear sized in the US… and GG is tiny. GG is a “faggy anime game” to most people. I can’t imagine what category that puts AH into. There isn’t a single character in that game that isn’t some sort of stale sexual japanese loli stereotype. It’s going to have a rough time with the non-anime crowd.

Sure, I hope it does well, just because it’s a 2D fighter, and I want any of those to do well in the states. I, personally, probably couldn’t have less interest in it. I’d probably pick up clayfighter 1 again first. At least those character designs were funny. Character design is big for me, and I can’t imagine a game that does worse for me in that category than AH, so it kills off my interest level. It’s not even the loli thing. If the loli’s were even ORIGINAL loli’s, i wouldn’t hate it nearly as much. To each his own. Like I said, I hope the game does well and people play it. I just feel like there are waaaay too many people out there that won’t be into the style. Gameplay is king, but it’s got a lot of things lined up against it culturally.

What I fear most is that AH will just weaken the GG community, and probably kill the MB community. I don’t think we’ll see too many people dropping Capcom games for AH, but it certain could further scatter the already weak non-capcom playbase here in the US.

Oh well, who cares, fighting games are dead.

EDIT: BTW, to anybody who hasn’t been to Evo world, here’s what I can gather are the social class rankings:

Capcom fans (90% of people)
Obscure capcom fans
Tekken
That one hot girl
That one hot girl’s friend
The hilarious Japanese guys asleep on the floor
The guy with the rare contagious disease
Guilty Gear "Anime Nerds"
the 3 VF5 guys
The smelly guy playing Ikaruga
Shaq-Fu
The Janitor
Every non-gamer there (girlfriends)
Smash Brothers
Melty Blood "Loli lovers"
SNK fans

Usually even bringing up Guilty Gear would involve a 30 minute conversation about how Guilty Gear players are gay for Bridget.
Needless to say, I’m not real positive about the hopes of AH breaking into the compicated atmosphere.

I’m tentative.

vap - its quite obvious we do (have diff circles of friends, that is).

Well, the only thing you can do is play arcana if you like it. Dont play it if you don’t like it, but if you wanna play it, go for it. At least give it a chance, is what i say.

The thing is, marvel players are taking interest in it, and the marvel comm is huge. Melty and Arcana communities pretty much hold hands, and heck, some Guilty players might even jump in on it (because really, AH is similar to ^Core, in that they’re both pretty broke where any character is good, but not marvel or HnK level broke)

Again, i could be wrong, but we’ll wait and see. I can see 3S and CvS2 players hating it, but there’s some big name players who are in on it, Sabin, Demon Hyo, Fubarduck, SK etc.

I’m not disagreeing with its merits. I’m sure some players will jump on it. I just don’t think it’s going to see a community as big as the FGD thread implies. I think the vast majority of the country is going to ignore it, not wanting “another loli fighter”… of which it’s the most loli.
shrug Only time will tell.
I, personally, probably won’t ever play it, because I can’t think of a single character I could force myself to play as in that game. The stupid fantasy-maid big-sword chick is probably the closest thing, but even she pisses me off. Too much of the game personifies what I hate in fighting game art direction. I also don’t like the style of movement much. Something about the floaty weirdness really throws me off. The entire Chicago community would have to jump all over the game before I’d give a shit about it. Even then, I’d only play it begrudgingly. But still, I DO want the game to succeed. If the country goes “OMG THIS GAME IS AWESOME”, I’ll break down and play it, and enjoy the competition. I’ll always hate the style of the game, though. Always.

I just really want Sengoku Basara Cross. =(
Capcom characters and style, with Arc’s spriting work. The game seems to be exactly what I thought a “modern” Capcom’ish fighter would be like. Sure, there’s IAD, but it’s slow. The strings are short. There seems to be an emphasis on zoning, and it’s making good use of the wide screen. This is a game I can get on board with.

jim, count me in for friday as of right now.

nate, youre way too pessimistic or hateful (im not sure which) for your own good. saying something like, “i dont play x, its not my type of game” is more than enough. but you always seem to go on about loli this and loli that.

if you dont want to do anything to help a given scene, thats fine thats your choice. but spouting off negative comments left and right every time that game is mentioned is just pointless. we already know that you dont like the game, are you trying to convince others of the same thing? if you like fighting games so much and you want them to succeed then how about helping the scene or at least do nothing, instead of the exact opposite.

theres no reason to relay phrases to us like “faggy anime game,” even if they are part of some anecdote about your friends. whats the point of posting that? you want us to know that people exist that dont like guilty gear or mb or arcana? we know that already, and obviously, that doesnt matter to us (or me at least)?

If you’ll pay attention, I was relaying my experience from Evo, and what my garnered impressions were from the group of people i was around in total. Very little of what I mentioned was personal opinion. There was some personal thoughts, of course, but that was not my reason for posting.

“faggy anime game” is something I hear from people who aren’t my friends. Hell, it gets posted on SRK all the time. It has nothing to do with my friends. If you can’t handle a phrase like that, how in the hell do you survive on this forum? Or is it just an issue because there’s a personality conflict here? I’m sorry if you don’t appreciate how I express any opinions I have (loudly). I’m not about to candy-coat things to make what I’m saying more paletable.

The only reason I use the word “loli” a lot is because it’s a total hotbutton issue with fighting games right now. There are two camps. There are fighting gamers who don’t care about the designs whatsoever, and will put up with Japan spilling out whatever bullshit trend is hot right now (Moe), then there are those who vehemently oppose it. Right now Moe and Loli is that dividing line. Some people can’t stand it. It’s what sells in Japan, so it’s what gets made. It just turns off a big enough portion of American gamers for it to be mentioned.

I aleady said I hope for the best with AH. I only summed up what I heard from a LOT of people at Evo. I don’t like it, but I also don’t have to. I fear I’m not in the minority, though. At least with the older group of fighting gamers. I honestly hope AH gets a scene together and does well. I think Yuke’s a cool company. Besides the fiasco with their pricing on AH:Full or whatever, I think they’ve done a great job at breaking into the competitive arcade industry. I’m pessimistic for decent reasons. I hope I’m wrong, though. For me it’s only a design issue, but I AM a designer. It’s what I do professionally. So even though I’d like to ignore art design issue, it’s impossible for me.

I don’t feel like I’m overly callous. I am, however, frighteningly blunt. That’s very unlikely to change.

EDIT: as a side note: One of my ex girlfriends refers to me as the charming and loveable asshole. I’d say that’s pretty spot on. You either accept the things I say with a grain of salt, realizing that I never take anything personally or serious, or you take it in ernest and can never get along with me. Either way’s perfectly hilarious to me.

Hell count me in I’m down to get some games in been awhile since I"ve played some real comp besides I just picked up my US copy of Ac so I should stepped my game in that as well and I’ll actually see if I can stay longer this time.

I quit all fighting games. I only play GH now.

I call moneymatch.

no mm’s until I can 100% the 80’s on expert.

it will be done.

edit: would people play GH if it was at cad? I hear a lot of people talking about picking it up, but finding the difficulty curve too hard (it’s actually considered one of if not the easiest rythm games to learn). if so, let me know. I have 2 geetars at home and all current versions. imo, it would be a fun change up after playing some intense fighters.

rob, bring idol m@ster

Cause white people don’t have any rhythm! Oh! Buuuurrrrnnnn!

Kidding. I suck at GH.

I’d like to try 80’s GH. Wonder what songs they have on that. Just be careful that people treat the whammy bar gently.

It’s a fun game if your into 80’s band (which I am) covers hair metal bands like Ratt and Twisted Sister and some heavier stuff like Anthrax and Judas Priest. Caught in a Mosh IMO is the best song in the game.

So if I’m actually able to go this week you should bring it Jim.

I’d play it. I don’t have the 80’s version, but I’d still take on any challengers.

nate, you post merits a response:

obviously i was paying attention to your posts, otherwise i wouldnt have posted a reply in the first place.

how do i survive in these forums? what kind of question is that? i dont live here, and im not bothered by what i read. but that doesnt take away from the fact that you would like various FG scenes to do well even if you dont participate in them. and if you truly do, they why talk down about them? you say that very little of all the negative comments you posted were your personal opinions, and you say that youre just relaying what everyone else is saying about gg, mb, etc… well, you dont need to be a mouthpiece for their negative sentiments.

i dont think theres a personality conflict. its just that what we’re all trying to do, specifically in this thread, is to build a scene, get more people interested in games so there’s more comp for everyone (right kenny?).

of course at the end of the day, you can say whatever you want where ever you want, altho, your comments are prolly more appropriate in FGD or GD forum. if you can tell me how all of the negative things in your posts helps a scene ill take back everything i said.

Next time i go and you go, i will. <3

I wouldn’t take anything the GD people say too seriously. Most of them are just fanboys who would rather talk about fighters then play them anyway. GG, 3s, and MVC2 are the main games in the states, regardless of what people wanna say. So a lot of them had spare cash to go to evo…that doesn’t mean they are the voice of the fighting game scene. As always, a lot of good players coast to coast are left out due to not having the cash to travel. What you got was pretty much a biased survey where only the people with time and cash to fly to evo could participate.

ps - melty is loli

hey rob, therell be some comp for mb if you decide to come this week. me, yosh, and a friend that recently moved to chicago, plus cliff and aric (if he comes and decides to play).

aric, neil, this looks like itll be a good week to make it out too for gg.
