Dang, and I’m stuck at ISU. I do promise that next weekend I will be there and I’m bring Max Impact Regulation A. If anyone is interested in giving it a try.
i’d LOVE to come this week, but im hanging out with Japanese girls at Navy Pier instead.
MEOWTH! That’s right!
I should be there barring unforeseen circumstances. And I’ll play mb if there’s gonna be a scene there.
Answer to point 1 - There is no direct solution. CAD is far for y’all like Nickel City is far for us (and some of y’all too). The same shit that happens with Nickels is going to happen to CAD whether we like it or not…if a few people aren’t going, it turns into NO ONE going. One of my goals for the fight nights were to attract a diverse group of casuals, casually competitives, and competitives with varying tastes in fighters. In terms of distance…the biggest enemy is where you live and what it takes to get to CAD. Does this annoy me? No, I get why it happens, and I’m the same way about Nickel City and other places…
Answer to point 2 - On the same note, some console releases thrive on having shit the arcade doesn’t have. True, you could just stay at home…but how much room does your home have? There is potential for a bigger crowd at CAD (in terms of size and comfort) and you don’t have to worry about your belongings in your own home getting fucked up…just like why you’d go to an arcade. It was more about the social setting. The fee is simply from us using someone elses place of business to do this, that’s all. I thought it was affordable (and most of you did as well) Also true, that paying to play shit you may have in your very own home is a tad tough to swallow, but it’s not like you have to come every time…nor is CAD a console cafe (which is a terrible idea in and of itself…and there actually is a console cafe coming to our neck of the woods…hahahahaha), so there’s other shit to do there.
Answer to point 3 - Correction: CAD promotes a FIGHTING ENVIRONMENT…the casual and the competitive both, are welcome. The problem here is the community itself. People that just want to have fun with a game, have a hard time doing that when everyone is whoopin’ their ass left and right and all they have to say for it is to call the loser a “scrub” or whatever. The competitve side has this tendency to act very diva-ish (expects flames). You’re bored by the lack of decent competition, yet ironically…some don’t want to make the effort to get the competition to come out…nor do they wish to impart the knowledge unto a new breed.
Then there’s the problem of “I wanna play this, but no one seems to want to.” Make it happen if you want it so badly…don’t sit there and complain about no one playing said game when you’re not poppin’ that shit in and showin’ folks why such and such game can be fun. I’ve stated from the very beginning that shit like that was welcomed and ENCOURAGED, since all that can do is boost the community as a whole. Those that bitch about such and such games being played can either a - not play the game and play something else, b - shut the fuck up and not play anything and leave, or c - not bother coming out and doing their own thing wherever. I was told by Cliff in the beginning of all of this, that I was not the first to come up with the idea of hosting a fight night at CAD…however, I was the first to actually MAKE IT HAPPEN.
Unless you’re gonna put forth the effort to help the community grow…shut it and shove it. This goes beyond Arcades vs. Consoles…this goes beyond scrub and pro and everything in between…this whole fucking community is DYING for various reasons we’re not going to get into here…if you come out to support CAD, Nickels, or wherever, you’re already doing your part. If you’re gonna sit and bitch all night and be a gamer-diva and act all jaded towards everything…pull your head out of your ass and get with the program.
(stopping because I think this is gonna have to be a double post…to be continued)
I should be in tomorrow and I might actually be able to stay late lol.:looney:

The original intention of CAD Fight Night:
- There is no good LOCAL arcade in my neck of the woods. Some people have a vested interest in playing fighters, but due to the severe lack of competition…there is no room for growth. I wanted to provide a spot for kids in my neck of the woods to play and grow, so that they could truly appreciate the fighting game genre as we do. I wanted an alternative to the existing arcades, because I wanted to do something about the lack of effort on the parts of the operators not keeping up with titles, or maintaining cabinets (and this has been bitched about on the chicago thread on numerous occasions, ESPECIALLY from the Marvel and Third Strike kids…and don’t even get me started on Tekken). I wanted an opporitunity for peeps to be able to come out and try other fighters that are highly unlikely to make an appearance in what arcades we DO have (^Core, MBAC, AH when it shows up, KOFXI…blah blah blah) I wanted to add another chillpoint for the area, granted…yeah, it’s an internet cafe so it can already be that…but when you offer other options within it…there’s potential for more business…and more business is good business. Lastly, (believe it or not) I wanted to earn some respect from the community by trying to help the community grow. I wanted to contribute something, so I did.
The reality of the situation:
- Despite my efforts with the fliers being made and posted around the chicagoland area, no newbloods came out to support my project. The only real supporters were a small fraction of Team Chicago (to which, I give you all my deepest thanks for giving me a shot.) Understandably so, there was apathy in this part of the community (as in, the area), so some didn’t bother to come out fearing there would be no competition for the game they wanted to play the most (seemingly ignoring the point of “make it happen at CAD”…not in those exact words, but it’s what I was saying) Others have a difficult time making it out to CAD on a consistent basis for whatever reason (lack of reliable transportation, money, stupid public transit systems and whatnot) so this causes others to not come out…which is understandable and relatable. Some big things need to happen to make CAD a successful addition to the fighting game community…
What can make CAD more successful than it is at this point:
-
Jim is onto something with the Guitar Hero thing…it has a very competitive community, and I think the players will want to come out and experience some potential new competition…I have decided that I will give this idea a shot, and spread the word to friends of mine and see what happens these next few weeks.
-
…shit, if that keeps up though, I may have to suck it up and let Smash in…I mean shit…it was in EVO…
-
Possibly not doing it every friday. This way peeps won’t feel like it’s such a chore to come out every week when they don’t really have to. (if you have more pressing matters to attend to or whatever, by all means…) Maybe one week, have the gathering, and then another week in the month, have a tournament night. Maybe 2 friday’s out of the month…then it’s like…since it’s not every friday, people can plan way ahead of time for it and be more successful in coming out. (unforseen circumstances notwithstanding)
-
get more working tv’s…we had 4 (including mine), but one of them mysteriously crapped out and…yeah, god damn it. at least we can kinda makeshift it and have a 360 hooked to a PC monitor, but who takes DoA4 here that seriously?
Essentially:
- I’m pretty much open to other peoples ideas…so hit me with 'em if you got 'em…let’s work together.
Competitive smash is insane. I haven’t played it in a while though since I’m currently just waiting for brawl, but the tourneys for them are huge and the battles get pretty intense. (It was the biggest tourney at anime central, with over 80 participants if I remember right.) It could bring people to cad, so I wouldn’t dismiss it if we’re bringing guitar hero as well.
ya, you pretty much covered it. me and dennis had a brief conversation the other day regarding CAD, and he brought up a really good point that there is no “local” or “hometown” players attending. if a community has no base, it’s really hard to expand off of that when your “locals/regulars” become the people that live an hour away.
I mean if you really want this to take off, your gonna have to put some cash into advertising it in your local area. I mean like posters in malls, mailers to local houses/apts. And like you said, maybe start advertising some of the games played on a larger scale like GH or SB…I mean there will be people at CAD that will play that shit, just not all the time.
the bottom line is you gotta start small by attracting the locals first, then expanding to the players that are farther distances. in cad’s case the opposite was tried first, and as you can see it’s becoming harder for the distance players to travel with busy schedules.
so give it a shot, what’s the worst that could happen.
damn, rob’s always hangin out with those japanese girls
Well put! I think now with the US release of Accent Core, more people are going to be looking for some competition and also to play other fighting games. And if they keep their eyes open, They might realize they can have some good competition in their own backyard. AC is a visually stunning game that would appeal to almost anyone who looks at it, Lets just hope gamestop and other video game retailers keep stocking it. If anything, Now would be a good time to start promoting a little more seriously due to some recent FG releases (T5:DR, VF5, AC) and from there, they can take interest in other fighting games aswell and learn more from other expierenced players.
Also, I should be there tonight… We should play some more ST!
if mario, roger and maybe dennis go, I don’t think I’ll be playing anything but a2. :wgrin:
also nate if you still need a ride you may want to call me or yosh and get it figured out. I can still get you from the el if you need, but just let me know ahead of time so I don’t strand you there like I’ve been known to do to people cough adam cough cell is 630.639.3385
What time are you leaving tonight? I’m currently forked in the face by work. I just put in 16 hours yesterday, and evidently it wasn’t enough. I’m sure I’ll be here this weekend working on crap and crying like a baby. I’m really unsure when I’ll be able to walk out of here without getting eaten alive by account people asking me for bullshit.
I wouldn’t mind having smash set up if it meant more people showing up. I’m very into the social aspect of the fight nights, and just having a good time.
The GH idea is really good, and setting up some tournaments would definitely get things going.
As for that local area, it’s pretty dead in terms of fighter games. Most are Halo players and that’s about it. Sadly, the “hardcore” gaming world is either in hiding or just plain dying.
Seems like these days it’s WiiBowling or GTFO, and I’d rather GTFO.
not sure what time we leavin yet. I just got home, but if you still want me to pick you up from the train, anytime between like now and 7:30 is fine by me.
and btw I parry accountants.
If you don’t hear from me, assume I couldn’t make it. I’ll call you if I can.
I’m a little pissed at the ridiculousness of this project… considering it was delayed by people who are NOT me, and yet I’M the one doing the work late. Dicks.
Good shit and good games last night me and my friend Jake had a ball last night.

Pretty fun last night, wish I could have played more games though, but still good times. Wish I could have stayed longer too but I was really fucking sick, chugged some Nyquil as soon as I got home and knocked out.

Great turnout yesterday. Guilty was fun, I’m horribly scrubby at 3S now that I haven’t played in forever, found out where wendy’s was, and Neko Arc Chaos had me in tears. Good times.
