I’ll probably take you up on this, good sir.
salute
did someone say tekken dr
aw shit…
shiiiiiiiit!
I hear ya man, I’m pretty much in the same boat. That’s why I really enjoy playing psu 'cause I can just play a few hours here or there, immediately have people to play with, and if something comes up, I can still do stuff too. Not a lot of planning required for just about the same enjoyment I get out of fighters. Also, it’s hard for me to want to go out of my way when the majority of the scene can’t (or won’t) travel out there.
I feel like I’m just now getting into a scene that’s in the process of falling apart. Sweet. =)
unfortunately…this is how it is.
if person a isn’t going, person b doesn’t want to go, and then it starts this whole chain of kids sayin’ “well i’m not going either because there doesn’t seem to be anyone going.” this would be even worse if new bloods saw the flyers and actually came out as well…because then it would look doubly bad on Cliff and I…but since you guys pretty much ARE the fight nights…the success is literally based on how many of you say you’re coming or not, and the last two weeks were crap because of it.
on top of that, you have what “seems” to be the situation of the marvel kids just not liking the idea of CAD Fight Nights existing for whatever reason.
I dunno…maybe I shouldn’t do it every friday anymore?
Well, in my own opinion, I can think of at least 3 major issues that CAD has to face…and I’m really not sure if anything can be done about it. They are all related to eachother, so take it as you will and maybe try to come up with a solution to some of the issues.
-
Location - CAD is really far for most people. For northsiders, about an hour drive (non traffic) is usually a good estimate. As Vap stated, from the city without a car, taking cta then getting a ride is a 4 hour eta. I don’t even want to try and estimate what southside people would spend traveling only to…
-
Pay to Play Fighters On Console - something anyone traveling those long times can do in the comfort of their own living room, without spending time and money on gas/entry. Arcades used to thrive on having new stuff that consoles didn’t have. However paying to play games you already own and have at home is very hard to swallow for a lot of peeps, especially when…
-
CAD promotes a casual fighting environment - so you get a person who doesn’t care about travel times or spending the money to drive/enter. Then they get there and realize that they could have fought better comp next door. In my opinion, this IS the reason why people aren’t making the effort to come out and even give it a shot.
Like I said, I’m not hating on you guys or anything. These are just the facts. Hopefully you can try and come up with some creative solutions to solve some of these things in the future, so more people try and make it out. Then again, you also have to figure in that the majority of the chicago scene is broke and/or lazy, and asking them to get out there is pretty close to asking the impossible…
Jim, also keep in mind that Friday night, some people work, are tired, and heck, some people just have other plans that they make as opposed to playing games friday night.
I liked CAD, i had a lot of fun last time i went, thing is, i couldnt bring a group of friends there because:
a) Only certain games are played, and prolly not the ones they wanna play
b) For that, we could have just gone over to my place
And yeah, having to pay to play games we could play anyways, and having to drive out really far just for that is hard for a lot of people.
I’d LIKE to go again, and there were times i was free, but nobody else was going, therefore, i decided not to go. Its a shame. I had fun playing Cliff in MB last time i went, but with gas and the 3 bucks, and having no guarantee he’s actually GOING to play me for a long period of time in MB again, its not quite worth it to go if nobody else is. Keep in mind, i dont really play GG or 3S, which is most of what’s being played there…
Its a great place, and im always about supporting the scene, but there’s just too many other factors.
millions of ppl live in chicago but like no one plays fighting games, it’s hillarious
No, a buncha people play fighting games. Tons of people play smash. etc.
However, none of them play at a competitive level, which is the difference. As much fun as it’d be to play people who claim to be good at something and then rage them into the ground, it gets old, and i just want to play people who are decent.
okok teach me melty blood and lets play
meltyblood is so easy to learn its not even funny
it is… but i can’t say much since i stopped playing like 4 months ago, and am absolutely horrible now. i was also part of a combo vid that never got released.
james always beats me in tourneys. :annoy:
i don’t really care for fighting games right now except for arcana heart. i could start practicing mb again if rob needs people to play, though. i don’t think i can re-learn aoko (pretty lame how i couldn’t hit a single 1-2-3 loop at evo north) so i’ll just play sacchin.
Ari - Melty blood is pretty easy. Learn an easy B&B and then learn the few tricks you’ll need to pressure the opponent. You’de be good at it if you played it. If you dont have a JP ps2, there’s always the PC version…
Orka - Well, if you dont wanna play melty, you don’t have to. Im kinda playing it until AH comes out…but its the closest thing i have, haha.
accent core hit ps2 in the u.s. and that’s all merry and shit but… dunno, it feels 2 months too late or something.
i haven’t kept up with mbac ver. b for pc. but from what i hear, len aparently jumped from low tier to top tier just because she has a controllable black cat? wtf
Yeah, Melty Blood is super-easy. I have had almost zero human competition and I had a pretty wicked win streak at Evo World for no apparent reason. I’m not a great player, but I can read people pretty well, and MB doesn’t have enough of an execution hurdle to stop me from poking apart weaker thinkers, or people less experienced in fighting games in general.
Talking to most people at Evo pretty much made me think that Arcana is going to be the only full-release 2D game to have a smaller community that melty blood. Not that I didn’t already assume as much would be true. Melty blood at least isn’t completely loli, so people can play it and not feel retarded. It’s community was tiny at evo, though. It’s not that Arcana isn’t a decent enough game. It just is a “new wave” style 2D fighter like GG/MB/etc., but it suffers from the inability to shake the horribly japanese stereotypes. At least Guilty Gear is wacky as hell in terms of design, so people can pretend they’re just weird, instead of perverts.
Guilty Gear even made me sad. The group was so small and disorganized. The only official group smaller than GG at evo was the poor VF5 guys, and that wasn’t by much.
I can’t imagine trying to pick up a game that had even less support in the US than Guilty Gear. Arcana’s going to face a rough, up-hill battle. I guess the next big thing on the horizon is Sengoku Basara X. It’ll be our only hope for a new game to break into the hardcore crowd.
I guess I’m going to have to learn to play marvel when all of you guys stop getting together to play GG. Dammit, I just got back into this stuff. I refuse to give up, already.
I’ll have a more well thought out response to all of this later on…my mind is on some other important shit right now…sorry guys.
I haven’t really been a big part of the tournament scene for a while now, but I’ll be playing GG until it stops coming out. As long as the get togethers aren’t really hard for me to get to, I’ll find the time to head out. I also try to at least be somewhat competent at most 2d fighters, so I’ll be picking up arcana when it hits ps2, even if the scene for it is gonna start out small.
Vapulus - If anything, from the people ive talked to, Arcana is gonna be bigger than MB (tho thats not too much of a hurdle).
But yeah, Ari, if you really wanna learn Melty, tell me a character, and ill tell you what the B&B for them is, and show you some vids. Hopefully its one i use, but ill just fake knowledge otherwise.
