i don’t like dirty places

Take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I think your personal theory is actually wrong.

You cannot blame the higher level of the competition for actually not having “progress”, especially for new players to come in. It is definitely NOT the reason why the scene is “fizzling the fuck out”.

The greatest example that I can come up with is the South Side GG people (Blacksnake a.k.a. Prucha, Kevin-force, and Fiestament a.k.a. Jesse). When I first met these guys at Nickel City, they were SCRUBS. I was pulling 30-40 win streaks against them like nothing, each week. And yet, the regulars either didn’t give them a chance to succeed or dismissed them like “scrubs” altogether. Enough to discourage them, right?

Wrong.

What I did was encourage them to be better, push them to their limits, TEACH them the right way to play, and even talk shit every once in a while to push them even harder. After all, there’s only so much shit talk a man can take, especially if the shit talk is coming from an annoying guy like QuibaTime.

“Luckily” for me, these guys actually had the DESIRE to succeed and become better players, too.

2-3 years later, I can humbly admit that they are actually way better than me in Guilty Gear now. Part of the reason why is because I actually stopped practicing (not having access to the game does this to someone), but that’s not the point.

Bottom line, “high level competition” isn’t the culprit as to why the scene is exclusive the way it is. As the saying goes, it takes TWO to tango. You need to have excellent teachers and mentors in our fighting game scene to guide the beginner players, and in the same token, you need those same beginners to have the DEDICATION and DESIRE to improve and get better.

Which brings me to my next point. What type of audience is CAD exactly trying to attract? Are you trying to attract tournament players, or casual players? Your basis of argument so far is very confusing to me. On one hand, you want the tournament players to come to CAD. But on the other hand, you want to “keep things open” by having other fighting games (some of which people don’t play competitively anymore)… which basically caters to CASUAL players.

Perhaps you’re trying to do both? If so, maybe you should get more TVs…haha.

dennis = 100% truth.

Like he said, I’m down for supporting the scene in any way I can, but it just totally misses the point of “trying to get people interested in the scene” if you are attracting them with random, obscure games that there is no challenging comp for. The cycle just repeats itself…people play the random stuff where nobody knows wtf is going on, they win a few matches, then try to play ac or 3s and get obliterated. They leave disappointed and end up not wanting to play any type of fighter. However, if they would have sat down at a 3s or ac setup first, they would have spent their time observing and playing a game against players who are at a high level, prolly would have picked up a few gameplay tips here and there, and might have developed a basic interest/liking to the game. All I know is I didn’t get into fighters because people sucked, gave me rounds, or played obscure games. I got into them because I did, and still do, get handed. It’s the thrill of the competition and trying to get better then the other player that makes fighting games what they are. If people can’t understand that, then it’s better off not having them in the scene.

I didn’t say it was the entire reason…I said it was PART of my theory…it encompasses way more than just that (Jim knows, we discussed it a while back). I’m not saying you’re wrong, as I too have experienced someone being inspired to get better by my constantly kicking their ass…I’m saying it works the other way as well. See, not everyone has that courage, so they discourage easy…so in turn…you might want to give them pointers on how to get better…things like that. so I’m not wrong…we’re BOTH right.

I’m not arguing about CAD, nor do you seem to be as confused as you think you are. Yes, I’m trying to cater to both crowds…and broaden the scope both ways…and yes, I know damn well we need more tv’s…but we don’t have that kind of money…unless people are willing to donate oldies for low low prices! (my mom sold cliff one of our oldies for 20 bucks…you’ll actually be playing 3S on it)

It wasn’t like that for me either…but I was able to pick up on other fighters as time went on, by playing whatever came out and figuring out whether i liked it or not. The fighters I wound up playing the most at that time (as in, back when SF2:World Warriors was brand new, and every fighter at the time was still new as well and trying shit out) helped me understand the scope of what was out there, and in trying out new shit, I was able to get into it easier because I could apply some of what I knew from some other game into that one. Example: playing Virtua Fighter helped me get an easier start in Bloody Roar, Dead or Alive, Fighting Vipers…etc. Playing SF2 helped me understand many other 2D fighters because of the basics. Playing KoF, oddly enough, helped me understand the supers in GG (they are done in similar fashions…) and other shit…I just have a strange way of thinking.

I guess in the end…I’m “Casually Competitive”. I respect both crowds and I try to have fun with them equally.

No one is saying sandbag for the scrubs…but the way you guys were sounding was like I was supposed to alienate newcomers and cater to you more…which is NOT what I’m trying to do. If people want to try out ^Core…I’m more than willing to set up another one…like I said…it’s all about choice…y’all sound like kids are stuck with whatever I put in…I can change it upon immediate demand. but if someone winds up honestly not liking the game…then what? fuck that guy? thats not how I do things, I’m sorry. I respect the competitiveness, but y’all are TOO SERIOUS with that shit sometimes, and then it becomes no fun all over (to me anyways) and even with an honest tryout, he/she leaves disappointed any damn ways…and what good does that do? regardless…“All I know is I didn’t get into fighters because people sucked, gave me rounds, or played obscure games. I got into them because I did, and still do, get handed. It’s the thrill of the competition and trying to get better then the other player that makes fighting games what they are. If people can’t understand that, then it’s better off not having them in the scene.” You make the greatest point ever right there. It needs to be understood, casual, competitive, or otherwise, that the true fun will not be had if you don’t apply yourself to the game. Fighting games aren’t kind to those that don’t want to learn by doing or studying or whatever…gotta step it up at all times or leave. that’s something that they will find out one way or another. I just hope y’all know I’m NOT trying to disrespect your views or anything…I just want to know you at least get where I’m coming from. I DO value your thoughts and opinions (if I didn’t, I wouldn’t be here)

GGs tonight, all! Glad I finally got a chance to play AC against some real comp.

Who was that Slayer player with the headphones?

EDIT: Jose is pretty good at GG. :o

riot - I dont think they’re saying cater to them, i think they’re saying cater to the people who are THERE and took the effort to come.

If three people who are really into guilty gear and really really good at it are there, but 10 people who are casually into 3S are there, then there should be more 3S setups just because there’s more 3S players. Not even mentioning “competition” or “casual gamers vs competative gamers” but if there was 2 AC setups and 1 3S setup, then i think it should be changed to 1 AC and 2 3S because there’s just THAT many more people who are there who want to play a certain game.

Dennis isn’t saying “Cater to us because we’re hardcore”. He’s saying “cater to us if there’s a lot of us who want to play a certain game and took the time to go out there”

And if you’re saying “i want to cater to everyone,” that doesn’t mean telling the hardcore guys that they’re too hardcore and they should deal with it while telling the newcomers that they get their way because they’re new, which is the impression that i’m somewhat getting from reading here, which is why there’s such confusion.

And sorry i couldn’t make it this week. Depending on if my friends all are unable to go to a convention next week in Iowa or not depends on whether im coming this friday. Ive just been working (what feels like) nonstop so i havent really had time to play any fighter recently against anyone.

good shit to all at CAD tonight. rush that shit down. good shit.

ukyo tachibana - dude, you got some mad zappa dawg. maybe you’re better than my cousin. hey how do i mod my ps2 to play japanese games? help a brotha out!

cracka j - rush down them tacos, son. good shit.

amanda - where’s mah money bitch? you stupid hoe.

jose - you can’t parry throws, you chicken nublet lol. jajaja.

If everyone wants to continue the discussion thats fine, but just keep in mind that the discussion you guys are having is parallel to theory fighting.

The truth of the matter is that Kenny is doing a terrific job hosting and organizing all of the stuff thats going down at CAD. It was obvious to me, even before tonight, that if gg or 3s or whatever needed 2 setups, then it would have two setups. And tonight, gg had two setups, which was the perfect amount for the number of people that we had.

The slayer with the headphones would be me, name’s Aric. Slayer player since original XX with the UIC crew, though I tend to hide and pop up randomly, so I’m not very well known.

Good games tonight everyone. Trying to shake off some rust after not playing for a few weeks. Also nice meeting new faces. I’ll probably return next week barring any unusual circumstances.

Sorry i didn’t make it tonight.

yes, good seeing aric, dennis and chris making it out tonight. hope you guys had a good time. me/dennis/hose A ended up staying to almost 3am :wow:

like andy said, accomodations were made for the players tonight, so it’s all good.

best turnout I think we’ve had yet. I hope some positive feedback helps spread the word a bit and get some more players out.

Also, if you want some larger, color ads made up kenny, let me know and I might be able to find some spare time to do them.

Good shit last night had a ball!(Even if I did have to leave after we got back from Steak and Shake )
Only part I hated was sitting there for like 3 and half hours(It was either go there at 2.30 pm or don’t go at all) while some peeps in the other side of Cad were smoking. Felt like my nose was about to fall off.:wasted:

Good shit Kenny I like the setup and how things went during the time I was there good job keep it up!
Good games to all I played in 3S and ^C and Cvs2 :china:
Chris(Kobayashi) Nice to meet someone who lives in Elgin we need to hang out bro.

What happened why didn’t you show up?

Hope we can do this again sometime soon with some more Steak and Shake and without me leaving so early.

-Frankie

P.S.

Steak and shake=Top tier

Taco Bell=Low tier only scrubs eat there.

Jose ate at Steak and Shake. Yosh ate at Taco Bell. Immediately afterwards, Jose’s Sol beat Yosh’s Dizzy. No correlation? I think not!

LOL INDEED!!! As I said Steak and Shake= Top tier that Taco Bell messed you up Yosh.

-Frankie

Thanks Chris. Appreciate it. Your Axl just pieced me out, I couldn’t get in there. I’ll practice a bit more and we’ll try that again sometime.

…AND YOU CAN’T ESCAPE COMMAND GRAB! Bwahahaha! JK. GG’s man!

GOOD SHIT! NICE BURST! NICE TURTLING WITH THAT DIZZY SON!

Everything alright? Something better came up? Sucks man. I was asking about you. Next time.

GG’s everybody. I should have played more AC, but I could rarely seem to squeeze a game in with the way the setups were going. I didn’t feel like interrupting rivals who’d been squaring off in a monster grudgematch or something.

3S was fun, Jose. First time I’ve really sat and played that game for a number of years. I’d forgotten how much fun it is.

Maybe this week (since I’ll have my new stick done), I’ll look into modding my ps2 so I can stop sucking at AC and feel more up to the challenge.

shit man, I didn’t know I have a birthday party, but AM pretty sure will be there next Friday.

the hell?

YOU GUYS TOLD ME TO MAKE A RETARDED “GOOD SHIT” POST, YET JOSE IS THE ONLY ONE THAT FOLLOWED UP ON IT :annoy:

jose… i was joking about the parry thing. i only wrote that because i know you love parries. andy bought me food at taco bell, so now you owe him a burrito. :wgrin:

and i forgot to say thanks kenny, and great job hosting.

OMG GOOD BURST.

Yeah, GG’s man. Keep at it man. We’ll do it again sometime.
Maybe again next weekend.
