Just joining in on the discussion because I love the character. A few questions…
So, Alex seems to do poorly against other grapplers, who does he do well against?
I feel like he wins against Mika unless we get hit cleanly. Then you’re going to “Guess City”. I’ve only played one Gief and that was laggy so I have no real experience in the match up.
If you meant in general - A few have said the Karin match up feels favoured because of Alex’s good buttons. Anyone with a projectile feels like a struggle right now to me.

6 frame PowerBomb is there for a reason, much like most of his frame data. Whereas some seem like Capcom were just throwing numbers together, everything Alex has is for a reason. I’m someone who spends a lot of time with frame data trying to work stuff out and his is pretty intricate, to me at least.

The main thing people seem to use them for are fireball reads/reactions and doing things like cr.LP, cr.LP xx Ex-Stomp.
Some have been using st.HP xx Stomp but I struggle with it. (As a former Urien player this is embarrassing to the extreme)
I personally don’t often use Stomps unless I’m reading a fireball.

Does he really do worse though? I think he some of, if not the best footsies of the grapplers. For the most part they have a really hard time getting out of his setups. So far I would say all of the grapplers are 5-5 at worst with Alex until proven otherwise.
3frame normal would be pretty nice obviously, EX bomb has more damage/stun with best range (I think jab has same range). It looks like it leaves you a bit closer afterwards though. You can stomp after throw or powerbomb pretty well.
Got 2nd at a local tourny with all alex. Lost to a ken I play regularly. Sent me to losers and beat me again in the run back in gf. Need to get better with nerves, but alex feels really solid to me. Main issues that I’m having is dealing with deep crossups and eating shit in the corner. Guess I need to utilize vreversal more

Got 2nd at a local tourny with all alex. Lost to a ken I play regularly. Sent me to losers and beat me again in the run back in gf. Need to get better with nerves, but alex feels really solid to me. Main issues that I’m having is dealing with deep crossups and eating shit in the corner. Guess I need to utilize vreversal more
Against deep cross ups, jump back jab is fucking amazing.
V-reversal will get you a good knockdown scenario so yeah I would use that when you feel it’s appropriate.
Alex’s buttons are great if not a little slow. He can play contest buttons with some of the best “footsies” characters.
That said, I really don’t like the Ken matchup. He can force us to move with fireball, he has ex tatsu to assert himself, and when he’s in close - it’s a nightmare vs our slower buttons.

I think Ryu/Ken kinda beat the shit out of Alex, one fuck up could really be game, their damage output is insane.
Particularly Ryu honestly. Ken can bait CCs like no tomorrow, but he doesn’t have denjin to worry about.
If Ryu gets you in the corner that’s basically GG, there’s really no way a good Ryu will let you out of the corner.
Ryu also has parry and you have slow pokes, you get the picture. On the flipside, he has 3f normals, dp, same health as you, so you’re really desperate to get what you can on the shoto.
I think Ryu - Alex is 6-4, or maybe worse idk. Ken has a slight adv because DP, and corner is also GG (alex is really prone to shimmy in the corner), but far more evenly distributed because you have a good neutral.

No but seriously, the salt in this thread! Alex is definitely one of the harder characters in the game to use, but most people that play him seem to agree that he’s also one of the most fun.
I’m fine with quality of life changes like more consistent cr.HP, slightly better stomp hitboxes, and more consistent non-EX knees, but I don’t get this 5f Powerbomb argument right now.
5f Powerbomb would make LP > Powerbomb and MP > Powerbomb 3 frame unbeatable traps on block wouldn’t it? Basically every single blocked button would become a jump or get thrown 50/50 mixup. I mean, jeez. Is his 6 frame throw really hurting him that much? It doesn’t seem like that much of an issue. As far as I can tell 5f Powerbomb adds no utility outside of the broken way it ticks from his frame data, and that doesn’t seem like fun design at all.
For instance, I was thinking about something, what if they made EX elbow armored from the first frame? Suddenly this character has a true reversal / corner escape? It could completely shift his game around. It could be a huge change in how he’s played, and given how explosive he is, it could make him a very scary character really fast… but wait, doesn’t his V-reversal already cover that, in a way? And isn’t his V-reversal one of the best in the game? Yeah birdies is armored first frame, but birdies isn’t a fast, nearly full screen punish like Slash Elbow is. They’re different moves with different uses.
It just seems really really early to be making changes to a character like Alex. I don’t think they should be touching him at all for quite a while.

Being more serious, I can’t complain about his design: he keeps the SF3 feel on his moveset and has some cool additions that are a win for everyone whether they were expecting the original gameplay or something new. Quite the opposite of Karin, who, no matter how good her damage / frame / hitbox data is, will always feel like a husk of her A3 self unless new assests are created for her. The complain or frustration involves some of the fine details that makes you feel that having fun is such a sin you are forced to do penance with a 45 % or less win rate. A few buffs here and there and he becomes a solid choice and everyone wins, including the opponents who will have a bigger yet fair challenge.

There’s some quality of life stuff too like health 1000 -> 1050, better stomp hitboxes and better non-EX anti-air knees, but I feel like Alex would be way more consistent with a better st.jab and better f.hp.
There is no info in the first page, what is Alex’s anti-air? What is his poking normal?
