Alex General Discussion: "At ease, loo-suh!" The Alex SFV Thread

Why should a character be OKAY and not everyone be great? A few small changes would come a long way…especially quality of life changes and more reliability. They would make him better but not S tier or even A+ tier by any means… Like the all PPP v-reversal, OH being f.mp to df.mp. C.HP always juggling properly on every character. And these small buffs by making his command grab 1 frame faster wouldn’t even be that significant but any boost helps. Making ex slash not start up on the third frame, a charge move, and heavily punishable where most medium and heavy attacks punish it… Birdie’s EX bullhorn for instance is -6 frames more punishable than Alex, but it’s push back makes it less punishable than Alex and is armored on the first frame…and he’s not even top 8.

The roster is small in SFV and Capcom should be gunning for as many 5-5 matchups as possible. Which IS very doable IMO… And the game is so damn very close it. So why not try to achieve it now while the roster is still as condensed as it currently is? Capcom stated on the latest interview want EVERY move to have a purpose… and there are many moves THAT don’t have a purpose at all or very very bad and not worth the risk. Would making those moves reliable and or have any use make a character suddenly S tier? No but the more tools the better i say.

At this point I don’t care if Daigo or Infiltration comes out and says that Alex is bad.
I’m going to bring up the same point I bring up almost every time this conversation happens around a character -
In first year of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Wesker was the best and Vergil was considered mid-tier. In fact a lot of high level players were saying that Vergil was awful because of his inability to cancel whiffed buttons into moves. Go look where Vergil is now. There’s been no patch/update/changes made but Vergil is at the top of the mountain and Wesker is an after thought if at all.

Yes, Alex has flaws. Yes, they may even be worse than Birdie’s, but why does he need to be changed? I have never understood the mentality of “This character isn’t top tier, better patch it”. I’m not saying that’s exactly where you’re coming from but I have read so much of this crap over the last few days I’m pretty sick of it. No Alex is not top tier, yes he has flaws, no he doesn’t need patching/buffing, yes, it is only 2 weeks after his release.
He is true to his play style and that should be enough. If you like the character then play him, if you don’t, go and play someone else.

Oh and you’re correct, you did only put him at B-

By putting him at the bottom of your tier list you’re implying that he is bad, regardless of the fact that you put him at “B-”.

Been getting tons of mileage off of buffering v-trigger when using cr.mp outside of footsie range to catch buttons. You can combo into ex chop or if you don’t have meter just use elbow. Also works wonders with sledgehammer when you already have v trigger active.

No he’s not at all. SOMEone has to end up at the bottom of the list simply by virtue of how tier lists work, just like how being at the top of the list doesn’t make you Ivan Ooze. B- isn’t bad.

Because no matter what, someone is always going to be OKAY when compared to everyone else. It is the nature of balancing - There is no true balance. A character will always have the advantage in certain match ups, always have tools that put them above the rest of the cast, even if only slightly. If Capcom were to try and balance every character to be equal, they’d need to be making adjustments every few weeks in accordance with what the recent match ups look like.
At that point we might as well be playing MKX with match ups changing every few weeks.
Then we’re not even close to considering that we have another 5 characters coming out before the first year of this game is seen through. So there would have to be adjustments made when each character came out, to keep the balance. Then 2 weeks after that due to the new character being played and it potentially have lopsided match ups or unbalanced (Either too good or too bad) tools.

While to an extent I agree, if you put it in context with the rest of the statements made the implication is that he is bad.
I understand that someone has to be at the bottom and as I said somewhere on the last page - The tier list is a lot more condensed than games like SF4 or Marvel.

I suppose I am twisting what they meant by “Why should a character be OKAY and not everyone be great?”. When I read that I see it in another light - Why should a character be BAD and not everyone OKAY? That’s my own biases showing through and that falls on me. I think it’s due to the fact that this is what we’ve heard more than anything else recently - Alex needs “Fixes”.
I’m just fed up with it since he hasn’t even been out for a month and there’s been more crying about how he needs buffing than pretty much all the other character’s have received since launch.

The only things I would consider changing about Alex are:

  • Make ex.stomp trackable.
  • have s.lk comboable into l.chop
  • change his V-Reversal to PPP
  • decrease the scaling of his CA.

The only thing I would change is literally his anti-airs. Make the knee a consistently viable option like Laura’s.

welp, he’s the only one who’s spoken up, so that’s better than nothing

Nah, dude. If you don’t need a tier list, and no one does, then you can be content to wait for a really well reasoned one to arrive further down the line. Don’t take this one on high because it’s the least wrong. I mean, it doesn’t even discuss MU’s.

You’re welcome to your opinions and I’m welcome to mine.

When we have pro players trolling about characters and staying silent on characters, anyone who speaks up gets points in my book.

Knowledge is power, and that is only developed through discourse.

People say ehubs tier list is worthless, that is not true. There is value in everything.

Besides, we don’t even have any Alex match videos anywhere so what am I supposed to go on?

.

801 Strider called Alex a struggle character on his stream. But he likes Alex so the struggle isnt that serious.

Alex stuns in one crush counter combo and a single mixup. He doesnt have insane oki because of this.

Blanket statement. Play the character or dont. Just dont come here spreading doom gloom and toxicity. That shit gets no one anywhere.

Fuck you.

I will spread when I want when I want, and I will analyze a character and try to play that character on my own terms.

That “shit” gets us somewhere because it starts a discourse. As I said previously, others are staying silent. Others are trolling about characters. When in darkness, a sole light shines brightest.

But y’know what, as I said earlier, we don’t even fucking have alex match videos in this forum, so maybe you’re right, maybe I should just leave.

Jheeze, that was a bit harsh.

As I have said to you before - There are barely any videos of him at the moment because people are still learning him and so aren’t taking him to tournaments when they’re being serious. They aren’t playing him at high ranks online because they don’t feel like losing a couple of thousand points.
You also have to take into account that Alex is not an obviously strong character and as such the people playing him are going to be character specialists. Most aren’t going to switch to him because his play style can be awkward.

@iGuile is saying exactly what I’ve been saying - This thread has become around 50% complaining, 40% disagreeing with the complaining and around 10% actual conversation.

nerf
buff
patch
adapt

For real, this thread took a hard left turn in just 2 days.

Fuck it I’m done. You say you dont want complaining yet YOU aren’t doing anything.

Where’s your videos?

Where’s your matches?

Hell, go find some and bring them here. They dont have to be yours.

**If you truly want us to shut up about the character, that would do it. **

But its fine. My ignore list will expand exponentially because folks would rather talk shit and meme then actually have a conversation.

But as you fucking said yourself, that’s not what’s happening.

The Alex forum is all talk, all lab junkies.

I cant speak for the rest of SRK, but at least back on the Mika forums we had constant match videos. Ridiculous.

Go to the video thread then?

The original post in that thread has a link to 801 Strider’s stream with 3 hours of pro level play.

I dont know if I should be taking this seriously at all. Have you even done any kind of looking? Everything you complain about can be found with a place to discuss it here.

There’s even an Alex discord thread with open invite that many of us here use to discuss everything from matchups to situational advice, and even a salt section for your petty ass bullshit.

This isnt fucking TYM. We don’t come here to flex nuts and feed trolls. This is a place for information. Youre not a shining light, youre a fucking cancer. No one will mourn you leaving here. Its the fucking internet. Youre not some special unique little snowflake that needs catered to. Ignore buttons exist.

To quote Mike Ross - “I am Ass”. I am more than willing to admit that I am bad. Why would I post videos of me playing like shit when it wouldn’t be more than a “How to not play Alex”.

In the same vein, why would I post videos of someone who says “I’m still learning the character” as an example of how to play said character.

I don’t want you or anyone else to shut up about the character. I want them to not cry and bitch and moan about the fact that he’s not top tier despite being out for a grand total of two weeks. It’s boring and doesn’t do anything to actually work towards adapting to the problems that he has.

In all honesty, I couldn’t care less if you add me to your ignore list. Have fun in your bubble of “These people agree with me”.

Fuck it, I’ll put it out piece by piece and hope that you can read it this time.

PEOPLE
ARE
STILL
LEARNING
THE
CHARACTER.

You can’t expect people to pick up a character like Alex and instantly be good or even comfortable with him.

How long has Mika been available for? Seriously, when was Mika first playable?
I’ll save you the trouble - Months before the game’s release.
I’ll repeat something else from earlier - People aren’t going to switch to him. That means a lot of the better players out there aren’t going to be picking him up instantly adding to the lack of videos and shit.
Where are your match videos? If we’re nothing but “lab junkies” then why aren’t you using that information and putting up videos of your play?

Funny thing - They are the one who put up that video thread, complains there are no videos but has only gone out of their way to find 3. The 2 in the OP are one’s that I posted.
100% agreed on the TYM comparison. This thread is so reminiscent of so many TYM threads that I’ve seen over the years.

Just joining in on the discussion because I love the character. A few questions…

So, Alex seems to do poorly against other grapplers, who does he do well against?

I know I’m late to the discussion, but what do you think will help him more: having a 5f powerbomb or a 3f normal? Does ex bomb have any invincibility at all, or does it just do more damage/stun?

Could you direct me to some stomp/ex stomp setups? I really don’t know how to utilize this move.

I think Alex has the second best normals out of the SFV grapplers (Gief would be first). I faced a Mika in a ft10 the other day and I was most successful when I played defensive and used my normals and AA to keep her out, and every now and then go on the offensive when I scored a hard knockdown or a suprise dash-in and command throw.

I think it’s becoming the general consensus that he does well against Karin and his buttons do well against Cammy’s as well.

Sim is a tough matchup but we can kill him fast as all hell once we’re in.

Tech thread has plenty of stomp/ex-stomp mixups on the first page thanks to that video by DaFeetLee.
