Alex General Discussion: "At ease, loo-suh!" The Alex SFV Thread

Karin definitely feels like a difficult match. So many pokes and her Dash-Shoulder move is only -2 and with a 3 frame jab, she’ll win if we press st.MP. On the upside though, she’s one of the characters I think the Superman Dive will work against. Her Anti Airs are either Heavy Punches or her EX-Uppercut. If they use a HP, I’m thinking the Dive would catch the recovery. Need to test it out.
Chun is always going to be hard. Her pokes are amazing, her Anti Air game is amazing and she can pressure for days. All that considered though, if you see that your opponent likes to IALL, st.LP will blow it up.

Something that I’m working on is what to do when you parry a jump in. At the moment I’m choosing to not let rip because of a few times when they’ve just blocked it and I’ve taken a full combo and so I’ve been using st.MP after it or occasionally Power Bomb. Seems to work well and if they like to back dash after the parry, st.MP catches the out of the air.
Now st.LP Anti Air - We all know it’s good, but what are you doing after it? On a high AA even HP Flash will whiff. Are we looking at a situation like Chun where we’re going to have to dash under/fake dash under in order to take advantage of our AA?

Oh, and I did some testing - V-Reversal, Dash, f.HP catches wake up normals with a Crush Counter. I feel like this has a lot of potential since it basically says “Stop taking your turn, now it’s my turn”. Very in character for a wrestler too.

Edit-

I don’t know, I managed to get the dash up f.HP to work almost every time but then that was just a quick lab session. I will play around with it later/tomorrow. Regardless though, I love how he has a “It’s my turn now” V-Reversal.

I think I know why Alex eats so much meter… His truck looks broken but really it’s just out of fuel… He’s dumping all that meter into his truck to get it running.

At the moment, most people who’re playing Alex aren’t doing great stuff with him and they’re testing things out. More than a few have said that they’re not going to be playing Alex but just want to see what he can do so they don’t get screwed if they come across one in a tournament. For now I’d say wait until around Wednesday. After a week of him being out we’ll start to know who’s picked him up seriously and is actively trying/doing well with him as opposed to watching some of the people playing him now who never even try to Anti Air.

But if you read whats being said here people are winning with Alex. CFN auto-records stuff so there’s videos out there. PS4 streams/uploads easily so there’s also that.

I’m aware people are testing but I want match footage. I don’t necessarily need the best SF3 Alex to unretire and win the next tournament perfecting everyone along the way, I just need Successful Alexs.

Same use as 3s, you can use it as a meterless escape from the corner! More or less lol. Mix it up with the EX headbutt going fullscreen and if they let him jump in the corner he has an opening of escape

For entertainment purposes and some of the highest stun I could get in a combo. You can get three f.hps in a combo.
Ch f.hp xx f.hp xx VTC xx f.hp xx clothesline xx EX back drop gets you about 640 stun. Not next to the console to give exact numbers quite yet but it’s satisfying.

Alex isn’t on the site yet :frowning:

I get what you mean. I’m just finding the videos that I have come across to be lacking. I’ve only really seen one person playing him well and that’s been 810Strider (https://www.twitch.tv/801strider/v/57879587). Alex Valle was doing well with him last night in lounges (https://www.twitch.tv/leveluplive/v/58252045) but he plays him seemingly more footsie heavy compared to Strider’s, well, Abel style. At least that’s what I see, you might disagree.

okay I will add this to my post thanks

For some reason I’m hesitant to use forward fierce, I don’t even think about it during a match, need to implement it

Gonna go out on a limb and say it’s his best normal and every Alex player needs to make use of it to its utmost potential.

It’s a plausible anti-air, amazing frame trap tool that offers a good guessing game on block, gives us some BEEFY damage on CC, can combo into st.mp on meaty for some strong damage without CC and just looks fuckin cool. None of his other normals offer this much and it’s frame data is insanely good.

Yeah definitely going yo start using it more even if I get blown up lol

But it only hits high right? That’s why I barely use it.

I’m in the same boat but with non-Ex-Knees too. I know there are times when I should use it but I end up going for st.LP instead.
f.HP is godlike though. The fact that it’s +3 is insane and if you call out the jump early enough, you’ll beat it clean.
cr.HP on the other hand… To me, that thing is nothing more than a combo extension. I’ve had it trade or just get stuffed so many times now that I don’t even use it outside of either a big punish or combo fodder.

I used to be able to anti air Cammy’s divekicks with down hp clean. Somehow trades with a lot of other stuff but beat that. Weird move.

Try using the forward moving cr.hp in footsies, it knocks people up half the time. Does it hop over lows or something? It’s a very deceptive move that moves him forward.

Hmm… Will have to keep that in mind.
I think I wouldn’t mind the trade so much if the damage evened out but taking 90 or so while only dishing out 50 from the first hit of cr.HP is really annoying.

Well I’ve been grabbed out of it so I’m pretty sure it doesn’t have any airborne frames.
It’s not a bad idea and I suppose I should at least try it out but the 22 frames of recovery in neutral scares me.

Frotzey, if anyone ever wrekt me like that I’d have to make a new account and start all over.

Either you’re doing V-Skill and connecting with the next hit a lot or you rule at Crush Counters.

Or he takes a lot of damage very quickly.

:bee:

His VTC almost feels like an ultra comeback with how much he gets off of a poke into a mixup anywhere on the screen.
A large part of Alex’s gameplan is centered around his strong/weak points. His weakest point is the tip of his cr.mk/st.mk range, where he can’t confirm into VTC and other characters can whiff punishes w/ CC moves or whatever, and also right on the inside of his asshole. Fortunately, st.lp is looking stronger and stronger the more you realize he can 50/50 into powerbomb or combo into a lp/ex chop hitconfirm/clothesline mixup after the AA.

I’ve experimented with the character and I think I’ve seen most of his options…I think he’ll be mid-high tier, or maybe even better in the end, he’s only really held back vs people who can hitconfirm at his optimal range much better than he can into a lot of damage for no bar or 1 bar. chun/cammy/maybe ken etc)

Only thing I’d want to see are better startup frames across all his chops, I really dislike how something that should be an important part of his neutral (laying down chops for pressure, or to coax/pressure them into jumping) isn’t that great. 3s chop startup frames would be a god-send here, at least make him slightly less meter hungry in neutral.

If you give Chop a faster start-up you also gotta think of the implications it may give with the st.mp xx chop/cr.lp xx chop gimmicks we currently have. I think everything across the board is fine atm, I just wish we had one or two better ways to combat 3f normals because at the moment I do feel as though Alex is forced into a corner against them, and a -3 Chop would make the Chun-Li match up bearable.

True, true. But let’s say they gave his LP Chop 11f startup and -3, would that bust him?
