Alex General Discussion: "At ease, loo-suh!" The Alex SFV Thread

Cant seem to nail the lights into light chop. Whats up with the timing? The move either comes out too late our not at all.

God no, he’d just get a little quality of life buff with that. It would only help him deal with fireballs and stop Chun and Ken from punishing him on block at mispaced ranges.

st.lk?

I have the same issue sometimes, I try to cancel too early. Take it slow, for some reason the cancel comes kinda late.

Gief tip: Be careful with LK Elbow stuff, on block you’re forced to jump because he’ll get a SPD if blocked. Or he’ll do TK Air SPD, so
you’re kinda throwing yourself into a 50/50 if he blocks it lol

Unless you space it correctly, then I don’t think he gets anything.

Backdash doesn’t work? I imagine TK-SPD could reach but I haven’t seen the skies protected that often so I couldn’t say for sure.

Anyways, I’ve got two things. One is a query, the other is a set up.

1 - After Knee, is anyone able to charge up for an Elbow Slash? I can charge for Stomps/Headbutt but I cannot charge for a Slash. I remember something very similar to this with Decapre, if you hit them with an air throw, you couldn’t charge Back in order to get a teleport mixup. This feels the same.
Or my execution is even worse than I thought but I used to play Urien so that makes me think my charging execution is fine and it’s a game issue. Either way, if people could let me know so I don’t drive myself crazy trying to do it that’d be great.

2 - So I was messing around, trying to find a way to set up for a Headbutt. I think I may have found it and it if you make the right read, it can look exactly the same but make Ryu’s MP-Shoyu whiff. Granted you can only get a LP/LK punish but still…
Midscreen
cr.HP, Ex-Flash, LP-Headbutt.
If you hold forward you land right on top of them and grab the 3 frame st.LP.
If you hold back you land far enough away that MP-Shoryu doesn’t hit. Ex will.

I don’t think I need to stress it but this is HIGH RISK to the extreme.
If you make the wrong read and hold back and they just block, you’re going to be stood their for 43 frames (More than 2/3’s of a second).

I have no idea whether or not this is going to be a thing but the next time I train someone to block on their wake up I will be going for this.

Oh yeah, forgot about back dash.

Moving on to Nash, he more or less shows the issues with Alex has with his neutral. In order to play Alex at midscreen you need to master st.mp - lp/ex chop confirms. If you don’t, Nash wins, simple as that. He can compete with you at your poke range, and unfortunately you aren’t at liberty to VTC into your mixup game for free because you have to get that KD at all costs to even get inside a Nash who knows what he’s doing. Anti fireball headbutt/stomps are possible, but you need to anticipate and give a hard read to score it. Use stomps for anti-fireball by the way, you need to knock down Nash at all costs.

He can play his game without using a single EX move, so within 20 secs of the matchup give or take, be aware of hitconfirms into Super, you have to take risks to succeed in this matchup. Or be really good at st.mp - ex chop confirms, that move meets most of his pokes and can catch him dashing in really easily. Be careful with lp chop, you can hit him through his fireball but he can jump and go into super, so I wouldn’t rely on it up close.

Any other tips on the matchup? Feels like a 4-6, but nothing worse.

This was the bane of my life ever since Alex came out. Fortunately I had to deal with a similar issue when I was playing Bison.

What you do is first jab, slight delay, second jab, immediate cancel into chop. Works the same for cr.lp, st. lp xx l.chop or cr.lk, st.lp xx l.chop.
You need to be really fast with the cancel.

Very wierd move indeed. Apparently you can control how far he moves forward. I wonder if that affects how well it can anti air. Havent been able to test it out

Adding to what Bronn said - The Nash matchup seems like the classic zoner vs grappler fight. If he can keep you out, you’re done.
But he has no reversal and no 3 frame jab. This means that when it’s our turn, we get all of our mixups. st.MP xx MP-Flash will stop them pressing buttons. Know your meaty set ups will be key to not letting him out once you get in since the only real answer he has is V-Trigger but if you’re pressing a button on his first standing frame, he’s going nowhere.

There are certain pokes that no one should be letting Nash get away with. f.MK (Hop Kick) and f.HK (Step Kick) are both minus on block. Can’t punish them but definitely should challenge them.
f.HP is -13. If you block you can, depending on the distance, punish it. Even if just with st.MK but it is possible to punish with cr.HK.

Hardest matches I’ve had are easily Cammy and Chun-Li, I played an Ultra Gold Cammy and she she knew exactly what to do. Divekick, again and again. You can’t force her to stop doing it because you do no damage when anti-airing it, and if she lands it she gets knockdown into oki.

Bit of a ballache to play her, hate that match-up.

I was actually unaware of that… i wonder of doing the further reaching version adds start up https://youtu.be/jstBbmwAvb0

I don’t get why people would duck the 2/3 in casual match, nobody is rematching me :l

Maybe they saw your post last night and were just like “Nah Fam”

In the instance that you block something negative enough for your opponent to be down backing… Anyone have any defensive power bomb options they’d like to share? I think it would be interesting to develop a compendium of attacks that are negative enough that if blocked give us the options to power bomb. This kind of knowledge would definitely make us a bit more fearsome on defense.

I mean, this is why everyone is so goddamn afraid of Gief right? I know our command grab isn’t as fast but damnit if they’re blocking we could be bombing.

I think Cammy is worse than Chun, because…well they’re both hilariously horrible honestly. I guess Cammy is even more bullshit with her VT confirms, whereas Chun is just annoying in her mode. The matchups are actually the only thing I don’t like about Alex atm, just not fun at all.

AHAHAHA FUCK YOU CAMMY

DOUBLE PERFECTED HER

YES

I AM FEELING MYSELF

I was complaining a lot about the anti air situation, but suprisingly I just had to get the timing down. I can now anti air pretty reliable with st.lp. its not as bad as I thought. Improved my win ratio a lot.

gib secrets plz

CAMMY MATCH-UP SUCKS SHE GETS TO DO DIVEKICKS ALL DAY WITHOUT ANY THREAT. STILL DOUBLE P’D ON HER GET THE FUCK OUTTA CAMMY GET DUNK’D ON

I want to FT10 that guy to see how he plays for real

No secrets, you’re just fucked against a good Cammy on a real. Need to be awake to stop all of her get-ins, we basically have what I like to call the “fly swatter” which is st.lp to stop any of her free pressure tools, have to be able to react to v-skill, divekick and be able to do that ON TOP OF fighting her in neutral, as soon as you land a fly swat start pressuring her with traps, land m.chop AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE to set-up the oki post-hit

This match-up is fucked you just have to play passively and see what the Cammy is doing before even attempting to fight her

Is anyone having trouble with laura? I feel like her fireballs give alex problems

if you see her doing the animation for fireball just mash the fuck out of cr.mp and you’ll stuff it, guaranteed. If she’s doing it in your face, st.mp into chop, if she’s doing EX in your face it’s a different story, maybe go for st.lp xx l.chop if she’s doing it point blank actually
