Alberta Beatdown (03/06/2010 - 03/07/2010)

Ha ha yeah, I ain’t even entering this shit. I just thought I’d come in and say what ever. Maybe see if i can douse the flames a bit. I’ll watch the whole thing because it should be interesting and i’ll put money down on Edmonton winning this shit. Are you the boxing guy? I think I seen you at the Driven tournament. You won right? you were playing on controller

I gave my 2 cents on teams in the edmonton thread

I wholeheartedly agree with this. Being chosen for the team should be based on simple merit of gameplay & nothing else. Competition is the foundation of gaming communities, and with a tournament of this magnitude being hosted & ran by local players, there ought to be a more inviting tone to the way teams are decided. I can understand the stronger players in Edmonton being too lazy to go through the motions, I guess, but it’s the responsibility of every player to make the community stronger. You guys ought to be happy that terrible players like myself are interested in representing our local playerbase by trying out for a spot on Team Edmonton for this tournament. Where’s the love?

man i really hate this reply bug

YOU MUST WAIT 15 SECONDS BETWEEN MESSAGES, EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVENT POSTED IN TWO DAYS

15 seconds later: LOL THX FOR UR POST WE LIKED IT SO MUCH WE GONNA PUT IT UP TWICE

Since we are at a disagreement then that settles it right there. Nobody gets to decide, thus I made my own team. I am not deciding “Team edmonton” i’ll just call it “Gordon’s Money Crew”.

I think there’s a lot to be said for the level of hype city vs city matches produce. It’s not as fun if Van brings a team, Cgy brings a team, and Sask brings a team, but Edmonton is just five guys who just decided to play together. We have a pretty big playerbase here. In all likelihood Gordon, the team you want to put together will probably be the 5v5 team that makes it out of a round robin. However, having that round robin gives other edmonton players a chance to compete & lets them familiarize themselves with the players that are representing Edmonton against those putzes from “other cities”. I can’t imagine a reason for refusing this setup other than “I don’t wanna play vs several scrubs”. It’s hard to tell the guy who opens his doors to us for casuals so graciously that he should approach this differently, but imo it’s warranted :stuck_out_tongue:

If there was more money on the line, then I would host the round robin myself. No offense to Sask or Calgary of course. I think the best compromise is to make a "heavy weight and “middle weight” battle or using whatever methods you guys want you can challenge my team for the “team edmonton” representation. Though it would have to be for some money.

I guess I should mention that this is coming from someone with like 10 years of experience in StarCraft tournament organization, sponsorship, and community building. Not a random chump with an opinion :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh, absolutely LOL.

I agree that a round robin should be played to determine who plays Team Edmonton, but I don’t agree that it should be played at apoc. Anywhere else is better imo.
As for the 5v5, if we have enough players to support a second team Edmonton, and if time permits, I think we should do it.

Doesn’t it make more sense that with a smaller amount of money on the line, the tournament should be focused more on the competition, and, you know, playing games? I could understand wanting to hand-pick your team if this was a massive ballin’ atmosphere with people chuckin g’s around like nobody’s business, but that’s not what we’ve got here.

In my experiences there has always been a pretty clear seperation between “this is the day we get paid” and “this is the day we go to a badass tournament” in terms of how the players feel on game day. Look at Street Fighter IV - 60+ people from all over western Canada have signed up. Do you think most of them are on the same level as Edmonton’s top 5? Considering at least half of them are from Edmonton and not in Edmonton’s top 5, the answer is unquestionably no. Sometimes the better players need to jump through a couple of hoops to keep the lesser players interested, which keeps the scene alive and vibrant.

My StarCraft website is currently hosting an online tournament with over $23k in prize money. We’re a community of tens of thousands, but we know who our top 50 are. Though we certainly could have done an invitational tournament with the player base we have, and thus be guaranteed high quality gameplay (which increases viewership -> further sponsorship), we had an open qualifier. That means all of those top players had to physically play enough ladder games to qualify for the tournament, and they all did it. It’s just better for the community, in terms of growth, hype, and simply maintaining interest. While it’s not a perfect example given the differences between our community and SF4’s local scenes, it’s an apt representation of why I disagree with your standpoint on this.

I am willing to help out with the round robin at my place, depending on the amount of people I would want to be compensated this time, ( no offense to paul, raiden etc. who always give money or pop away). Though the team I am making still stands.

LOL nice we got a Team LPHJB from Calgary. Holding qualifing rounds sucks its usually the same ppl winning anyways.

Personally, I have no qualms with you creating your own team other than it breaks the status quo of other cities bringing 5-man teams to fight Edmonton. I know the other cities aren’t holding round-robins for this, but the tournament is here, and most of the players signed up are Edmonton players. Imo it’d look a little strange, like four “Team x city” and then… five dudes. I mean, if you sweep everybody, why wouldn’t your team be team edmonton proper?

Don’t you at least have a small desire to prove that your dream team is the best five players Edmonton can field? :stuck_out_tongue: Don’t you wanna represent 780 against these hicks and coastal folk showing up in our domain?

Starcraft is more 1v1 based but I will use wc3 as an example. Teams are sponsored and the sponsors decide who represents them. Nobody sponsors Edmonton. Now Shiro can just lay his foot down and say “my tourney, my rules” however he is not because he doesn’t want to force people into his decision. Now I am being a little more blatant I hope you guys understand I am not being a dick and trying to run the show. I strongly feel like nobody deserves to be on the team more than Bee,John,Paul,Jones,Daver. I think for them to risk that position is madness. We had a 5v5 round robin very recently and for us to put our necks out again so soon is kinda gay. For example if I did a round robin and john had a bad day and lost top 5 I would be pissed off and by no rights agree that he shouldnt be on the team.

Also we are all forgetting that a round robin best decides who played the best THAT DAY. Where as I am basing my team off the best players throughout the history of street fighter 4 in Edmonton. That being said I think paul should be on my team. Round robin is kinda shady.

brainstorm it out cuties.

STFU Jax

Alrighty so with that in mind we can host a round robbin to determine a “wild card” team and have Gordans team as a heavy weight one. We will do it on February 28th and take the top 5 players for the team tournament.

The round robbin will either be held at gordans or my place. (gordan has more room i wont lie =) )

Also the Evolution slandered rules for the 5 on 5 will be how we do the 5 vs 5.

If you guys don’t want to enter thats fine. no one has to. no ones going to hold a guy to your head. I’m going to add the rules of the 5 on 5 to the first post.

This shit is for pride and not for cash. Just as it was at evo. I am sorry if this comes across as ignorant. But I wanted people to put their own input on here. I personalyl believe that a team representing a entire city should be made by the people for the people. I completly disagree with predetermaned teams. 3 spots were open and rog honda and seth we banned from being used.

That round robbin resulted in a huge flame war where in which Jpizzle was unjustly threaten for no good reason.

Gordan will have his team. That is fine and dandy and we don’t need to argue with him about who is going to be on HIS team. I will make a “team wild card” and do this on the 28th. Hope this settles any futhger drama

Everyone’s happy, sunshine & daisies

WTF guys seriously are we going through this stupid shit yet again. I’m pretty sure we had this discussion the last time we did a round robin and the results for the last 2 spots was predictable.

A round robin is really not necessary at this point as the top 5 in Edmonton is pretty indisputable no matter how one person decides to boast their skills. The top 5 in Edmonton is undeniably Gordon, John, B, Jones/David, and Paul. You can’t argue with that and as Gordon mentioned as well as when this was initially brought up with the first team Edmonton someone gets an off day and loses his top spot would be total BS. John blazes or decides to go drinking the night before then shits the bed at the round robin doesn’t mean he’s still not one of the best players in Edmonton overall. It’s all about consistent performance and if we look at casuals and tourney spots most of those players are consistently performing in the top 5 spots.

Also, I really don’t like coming out on Sundays for ranbats/round robins but if you guys are doing that shit let me know when and where. I’ll see if I can make it out on the 28th at that time.
