Air Dash Nerf. Lets talk about it

NickGuy knows damn well he loves him some Marvel 3  .

We’re old pros (pardon the expression) at fighting games though. What we take for granted (cancels, links, general fighting game strategies) newer players have no idea about these sorts of things. It’d be like taking someone who’s never played a game of basketball in their lives and being perplexed as to how they could POSSIBLY be missing shots or not making the correct moves on defense. While we might’ve been playing fighting games since 1992 or whatever, a lot of these guy’s first forays into fighting games was probably either Smash Bros Melee (inb4lolsmash) or even perhaps SF4 itself.

When people like this talk like they’re hot shit and do nothing but part what they hear top players say or complain about this or that it gets annoying sure, but those are just growing pains for the community. We’ll be better off in the long run once the dust settles, I’m sure.

2 cents: I agree that this is an unnecessary blanket nerf that affects all of the cast. I can see the argument for Ammy for instance (not necessarily agreeing with it, but I can see the argument), but I DEFINITELY think Morrigan getting affected by the nerf is downright wrong. They already made a lot of air dashes slower – making it punishable by full screen random hypers seems to be overkill. It will make teleports the name of the game, or it will downplay mobility to favor something else. (ie: Zoning and footsies)

Just talking theory fighter here, so we’ll see once the game comes out.

I’m going to banhammer the next jackass who tries to start a MvC2 vs MvC3 war or otherwise starts yelling about the kids on his lawn.

This is the (U)MvC3 forum. If you don’t want to be here, don’t be here.

Feel free to mash Report. I’m not putting up with this shit. Shoult, Nick, etc, I’m looking at you guys. You know I love you, but GTFO if you can’t treat other people with respect.

Welp. That goes to show you how much marvel 2 I played. You couldnt instantly block out of an airdash?

Then again, only the top tier could dash with a real use, and even then most of them could fly or teleport.

Rushdown isnt dead its just more difficult. UMvC3 is more balanced from an overall perspective than vanilla. Youre supposed to cover your character with assists anyway so whats the big deal?

Really this only goes to affect Ammy and the likes, it’s not like forward air dash was all that strong of a tool for most characters… all the good ones with 8 way air dash recover so fast from triangle jumps and what not it won’t matter, but the ones that have to horizontally air dash are gonna get boned. This probably also sucks for fireband since he seems to spend a lot of time in the air… he does have an air dash right?

But what are you going to do when you get pushed across the screen?

Instant air dash is going to be weaker, especially for characters like Dante and Trish who have good crossups off square jumps. DHCs into instant hypers like Storms ice storm are going to wreck them.

Well before this announcement I had already caught wind of Amaterasu’s air dash being weakened, so I started toning down my mindless airdashing and trying to rely less on the fact that I can cancel it into a block at any time.

Other than that, this doesn’t really affect me too much.

Your character still sucks anyway

Nah, I like Spidey. He just pisses me off, that’s all.

oh no not dante! whatever will he do to cope?

seriously though when you do iad crossup C you’re already pressing a button as soon as you can so it’s not like you’re blocking when you do it.

also ice storm dhc fucking up random air dashes is a good thing. Why not just wavedash?

Linear rushdown is dead. Teleport rushdown is still king. Morrigan and friends are in trouble unless they received significant buffs. Strider and friends are laughing. They have left/right mix ups just by being on the screen, whereas high/low shit is gonna be harder to get started. /theoryfighter

Most tridashing arcs didn’t involve blocking on the way in so I don’t think this is a huge deal.

Yeah, good tri-dashes will still work nice, but I’m thinking more about guys like Morgz/Spidey. Blocking during their air dashes was kinda fundamental to their approach, and I hope Capcom have made exceptions in their cases. They should still be able to mix up fine, but those guys will have a hard time getting in.

I’m fine with air dashes losing block on a character by character basis, but I don’t want the baby thrown out with the bathwater.

prior to this post, all my comments about this topic have been thought out with my opinions combined with examples in previous games. Then the guy wants to cry wolf after he starts some random shit. Other people quoted my post too and disagreed with it, 0 problems with that and I didn’t get on them. His first post to this thread was a straight up troll post and every subsequent post after that had 0 to do with the thread

I was merely making the point that in mvc2 even though you can’t air dash+block, there were so many more attack options that it didn’t matter. Here, the options are reduced for attacking and now they’ve reduced more options from what was a small set of options anyway which I’m disgusted by. Then I have to deal with people like that who think this is a mvc2 vs mvc3 thing and try to come @ me with some troll shit when it was merely an example and how it balances out attacking options

respect is a 2 way street. The way I see it, I did everything fine until random trolls started jumping into the conversation offering nothing to the topic but attack posts. If you notice, I didn’t say anything to ouroborus, or dios for having alternate opinions nor did I attack heart nini or devil jin with whom I had discussions with without any problem even though they have a different perspective. They’re entitled to that but when someones first post to this thread is just a troll post towards me, I’m not going to play nice with that person.

I dont know, I feel as though the only air dashes that needed “nerfing” was Ammy’s and Spidey’s Web Zip. I started playing Ammy a few weeks ago and even I feel her air dash is a bit cheap but it’s more or less because of what they’re able to do. Basically they can use it for cross-ups, unblockables with assists, air throws, block after it, and even cancel into hypers that basically hit from anywhere on the screen. They’re aerial moves all start in 10 or less frames. That means if a Spidey or Ammy does their air dash towards you they can block your attack if they didnt attack yet, if they do attack only moves under 9 frames or so will actually hit them (which most good AA normals are not and/or wont lead to anything dmging) and thats if they didnt cross you up, or if you jump and try to throw they can tech.

The fact that Spidey and Ammy are some of the fastest characters in the game means that characters like Dante, Hulk, MODOK, and anyone else with slow normals are put at a huge disadvantage as soon as they air dash. Faster characters like Mags, Wolvie, etc will fair better but only if you can see them actually about to attack and react in time. Call an assist to help zone out Ammy and she has Okami Shuffle. Spidey’s Maximum Spider isnt a better punish but since it’s a cutscene move, it means that as long as it connects, he’s getting full dmg. I feel an air dash nerf across the board was unnecessary bc IMHO these two were the only ones that made them cheap.

My thing is that overall the air dash nerfs don’t really do anything except reduce turtling and OS throw strength during air dashes. Which is completely fine.

The stuff shoultzula is talking about is stuff that’s been part of the game since Vanilla MVC3 and won’t change without playing another game.

I’ll break him in again no problem with that

The point that Preppy is making is that if you don’t like MVC3, then there’s no reason for you to post here at all.

Everything Shoultzula posted was basically: “This game sucks. It caters to casuals. Keep the casuals out.”

He was more so just saying the options are more limited when it comes to offense compared to MVC3. Which you can’t really argue with because teleport + assist/projectile in the middle is about the only new thing MVC3 brought as far as mix ups. The only other thing I guess would be low/overhead hitting assists that create chop shop fuzzy unblockables. Quite a mix ups from MVC2 just don’t work as well or just don’t work period due to mechanic changes. I wouldn’t say air dash mix ups are ruined by any means they still definitely work, you just don’t get all the creative options that you get in MVC2 and that’s what Shoultzula was trying to get at.
