You’re fooling yourself if you think Gen has the upperhand against Blanka. Damage doesn’t really mean much when Blanka still rapes him on KD or when he’s in his face. Gen is one of the most freeist characters in the game and he also has 900 stamina and stun. He’s extremely frail. It’s 7/3 in Blanka’s favor. Ask any experienced Gen and they’ll tell you it’s in Blanka’s favor. I’m sorry but I just hate it when people make it look like they have to work harder, when in reality it’s the other way around.
7-3? how? I think it’s a close matchup with slight edge to Gen.
Blanka doesn’t do a particularly good job of keeping Gen out, and Gen doesn’t do a particularly great job of keeping Blanka out. They can both crush each other’s wakeups though.
What amazing fact am I missing about this matchup?
Just stay in his face. Get a KD, do the beast hop back and forth and do the electricity c.lp grab shenanigans and repeat. Obviously a good Gen is gonna pick this up on this sooner or later so you have to change it up a bit and keep him guessing. Gen doesn’t have the tools to deal with this kind of thing and he’s gonna struggle like a bitch against it. I guarantee it. I play Blanka too and you’ll be surprised at how free this matchup is.
so do unsafe shit and hope it works?
No, it will work. It’s not guaranteed to work all the time but the fact is that Gen is being put at alot more risk then Blanka is and that’s why the matchup is in Blanka’s favor. Like I said, Gen doesn’t have the tools to deal with Blanka’s Shenanigans. His best reversal is the EX Gekiro, but that move is so unsafe that a good Gen will barely ever use it. It cannot be FADC, it takes him a million years to recover on whiff and block, and in order to hit someone with it on startup he has to be closer then the range of a NORMAL THROW. Just because Blanka is low tier it doesn’t mean his gimmicks don’t work on other low tier characters. Saying Gen has the upperhand is like saying T.Hawk has the upperhand, when we all know that Blanka rapes T.Hawk badly.
You said yourself you don’t have much experience with the matchup so now I’m giving you advice on what to do. If you wanna try something different, then be my guest. I’ll just let you keep losing matches you should be winning.
you do realize in the reverse that gen can do the same thing to blankas wakeup mixing up high/low/kara throw and blanka eats ultra for trying to escape right?
Gen’s Kara Throw is not even good. One of Gen’s strongpoints is to crossup on KD but he can’t even do that safely against Blanka because he’ll just eat an EX Blanka Ball from underneath. If you’re playing Gens that are brave enough to want to close the distance on Blanka when he’s KD, you’re not playing good Gen’s. As soon as there’s room for Blanka to breathe he can just start with his shenanigans and overwhelm him with it. A good Gen will lame it out on you as much as possible. An Ultra move is hardly a winning plan.
he can os or just punish all of blanka’s wakeup options, so blanka is forced to block and kara throw opens up tech traps.
Blanka’s wakeup is terrible vs. Gen, why wouldn’t gen go in?
Wanted to revisit this, as I think I’ve improved in the Gen matchup after some training mode.
I asked the most experienced Gen I have an easy means to talk to.
I struggle with Gen, but I really don’t know the matchup well. Not many Gen players around.
i think its even. the one real problem for gen is he cant reliably AA blanka without meter or being in his kick stance. if gen is in kicks, his footsies arent nearly as strong, and his close game is much, much weaker
yeah gen AA’s trade a lot vs. Blanka.
How to punish the sweep of Guile after the first move on block ? Blanka can punish after the two moves ?
You can punish with pretty much anything. Horiball, upball, normals, ultra. I prefer to just f.hop over the second kick and then do jab xx electricity on the other side. Reversals are the easiest to time, you can mash hop out too though.
If you block the second hit you can’t punish unless you are basically inside guile.
I have a lot of troubles with the jump of Gen, how to AA on him ? He have a fast jump and IMO the best cross up in the game.
Gen has a tricky jump arc to AA. I like nj.hp, jf.mp, and walk forward st.hp vs. him. Record him jumping, and then try to work out the angles of which aa to use.
Quick tidbit about Gouken. cs.MK beats his alpha counter and causes the 2nd knee to be CH making s.LP xx electrics an easy link. You will lose to ex tatsu but i mean it’s an option figured i’d contribute (doesn’t happen often).
can link U1 as well but i usually prefer U2 in this matchup anyway
also remember…
the jump arc changes depending on the stance… making it even trickier

I think gen is likely even, 5-5. blanka has good footsies, and so does gen, and it evens out.
Gen’s special movies, off the wall stuff, is pretty easily dealt with most of blanka’s special moves and air attacks.
I play a gen consistantly, and while I win more overall, its more bc im a better player overall, not because of gen itself.
Also, gen has massive damage/comeback potential (600+ damage comboes), whereas blanka has to grind it out the whole time.
I say even.
After reading more, Chazz’s comments are mostly piffle.
Gen’s uppercut is actually really useful, especially the Ex --> stops hops, blanka balls, etc.
Gen certainly can deal with blanka shinanigans, as long as the gen has experience. Gen’s low strong is awesome now, great for stopping lots of hop BS. Gen also can safejump Blanka, as long as he has the timing down correctly, whereas chazz says its not possible.
Gen can also easily combo his super off of low short, so like gen can do stand jab, low short super, , then uppercut after that, which does mad damage, or instead of uppercut, gen can do ultra. In other words, gen has a shit tons of ways to combo super into mad damage, nothing to ever ever take lightly.
In blanka’s favor, is really the ground control with footsies. If blanka gets the knockdown, blanka can do some tricky stuff, but he has to be very careful, because if he does a meaty low short, gen can ex uppercut, and it will beat blanka.
I’ve just played the match so much, I mean hundreds of matches against a gen that can do all the smart stuff. I still say even.
