So do I, but requiring a direction could be a bad thing depending on the direction you have to press. If you are using a 3 frame normal to open up a punish, you don’t want to have to hold forward or back to use it. I don’t anyway. If I’m going to punish something like a jaguar kick after I just blocked it, I don’t want to have to worry that I held back long enough…or too long and didn’t shift to forward in time to get the “good” medium kick and now I’m being combo’d because I got the normal I didn’t want. I guess either way, if a command normal is attached to this button, it’s still going to be a problem in tight/intense situations. I’d rather just get rid of fake Bison st.mk if I could trade it for the awesome knee of haste.
far mk, besides fireball, is the main tool in the zangief and hawk mu, can stuff fireball start up in a specufic range, keep these annoying “jumping fuck footsies rabits” on the ground, does quick 75 dmg in a really good neutral game position in which no one just crouches, is sort of a frame and walk forward trap after blocked hados, etc. i wish gouken had more of such a good button. yeah ok, sweep,…
I’m not sure Combofiend takes Gouken seriously. Every time I hear him talk about changes its “We really need to help Ken or Chun Li or Duddley.” Frankly those characters seem more powerful than Gouken to me.
Give us a biggr hitbox so it hits all crouchers not just the big ones…or make a lk cmd normal that does the same…cl.mp seems like it should be a cmd normal as it does whiff at important times… a lil nugde and normals go a long way sometime… he does have some up close combos to lean into…with normals.
I do use it, but I find st.hp much more useful. St.mk is weak. It whiffs on short people and crouchers, stun is weak, damage is mediocre, and it doesn’t lead anywhere. Too many things against it IMO. If I could trade it in for “always on” 3 frame knee mk, I definitely would.
I use it as an anti air and when characters are approaching…it works fine in the correct situation but most of those, st.hp would also have worked for more damage. I wouldn’t say st.mk is really good.
For 3 frame moves…why? Why cr. lp or cr.mk? The range bothers me. Why not cr.lk? When you cr.tech, you get the lk, not the punch…
I’m sorry, I don’t see how faster jabs change Gouken much. They’re 4 frames already. They lead to chain damage and nothing much else. They can’t punish much of anything with any push back because of reach. Cr.lk needs to be faster. I’m tired of seeing it creep out and then I get thrown just before it hits. It would strengthen the footsie game and the combo game without making infinites (still can’t combo hado off of it)…
As far as mk, it’s a matter of opinion and play style I guess. I believe far mk is one frame faster than st.hp. As it is currently purposed, that one frame doesn’t make a huge difference…so we have overlapping moves. The reach is close to the same and the hitbox/damage/active frames/block stun are far superior with hp. St mk is good for catching people jumping away, though, as it goes a bit higher.
i love the max range of far.mk, it is surprisingly good, much bigger than far.hp, and can really stop peeps to aggressively walk in. difficult to focus crumple and on counter hit it provides a 1fr link into.cr.mp (range specific). at that range i think we can not expect massive dmg follow ups. far.hp is also good, but far.mk really has a place in gouken’s poking game.
but i would take a forward + mk command for the close one. but the hitbox needs to altered/nerfed. in that vid it looked quite overpowered when accessible at every range and 3fr.
yeah, unfortunately there wasn’t anything to gouken yet. but this could also be a good sign. in the last updates (except super), he always received a bunch of buffs. gouken is always listed low, almost never used, no real tourny success (besides velociraptor and guile counter picks). i think he has a good shot for substantial buffs.
chunli and duddley though really have problems in sf4 imo. ken not so much…
furthermore i believe we can not expect to use gouken universally anymore, for several match ups we just have to counter pick. the game has clearly developed in that direction and is visible for most chars during tournies. even akuma mainers counter pick from time to time…

Top goukens lose to us…top goukens not from this forum peruse but wont align themselves with many of us publicly…in ranked ,if its been a while they mirror, once we lay that pipe they counter pick,in streams the same is true, bandwagoners , top 5ers as gouken alts wont confide their desire to know what we know…
Hes not outmatched hes underrepped, you cant not appreciate all his normals in form or another…theres gotta be something thhat keep us playing, unless you get embarrassed by losing and shame makes you want to go hide in a corner…
None here have actually made serious runs by chance(save the handful or less) who try to attend majors repeatedly…

To be honest I play Gouken for the challenge. I like the fact I can fight a 4000 pp Akuma or 3000 pp Bison. I mean what can they do besides respect me if I win. They know I have no advantages. However some of the flaws and glitches with Gouken are damn ridiculous and too hard to overcome.
Namely being thrown whenever my opponent feels like it. Just recently I tried Ultra 1 Ken in his back while he was still recovering from DP. Don’t you know it went right through him. Oh but let him touch me with one jab and its full combo damage.
Honestly I would want to see cl.st.mk become st.mk and the old st.mk be a command normal like forward lk or something. Not like we’re going to try to cancel from st.lk or anything.
Did that sound salty I didn’t mean it that way. I think it just messes with all our minds and reasoning that the master of Ryu and Ken is not better than Ryu and Ken.
One of the proposed changes is Gouken will be able to cancel from st lk… So we will get a few frame traps from that and could cancel to palm or GFlip. St lk has awesome range and recovery so that will be a good buff.
Cancelling from st.lk won’t mean crap if you can’t get guaranteed damage off of it, and it isn’t going to mean crap if you can’t chain off of c.lk cause it’s going to be hard to get them with c.lp.
Cancelling into Gflip is great, but astute players are just going to beat you up for trying to g flip in their face.
LP palm will need a better hitbox to make st.lk useful in a real way.
