Ok, so I had this experience last night and I wanted to share this to you guys trying to conribute the overall context of this thread.
I’m a very mediocre player so take what I will say with a grain of salt.
I don’t play a LOT of fighting games but I watch a lot and read a lot, you can say that I am an informed person about the FGC overall.
So yesterday I was upset with some RL stuff and then I created a lobby to do some random ranked matches.
I decided that I would be picking only high tiers.
Now a little background: When I started playing Vanilla I picked Abel right away. I fight Judo and I fell in love with this character instantly.
I always played Gouken as a secondary char because I liked his style and design but I only started to really main him after AE 2012. I had problems with Abel’s 1-frame link, which is the base for all his game, so I kina gave up on him.
I only picked hard to master characters. Now that I think about it, it’s not because I like to be the underdog, but I was kinda sick of shotos and shotos alike which make the list of high tiers in every SF game, but to me this last part is just a coincidence.
Which means I never learned a high tier character. Never.
And then, I picked up Ryu.
I just know some very very basic combos, and I know them because people do them to me over and over.
And lo and behold, I was winning.
Sometimes I went the whole round without shooting a single fireball, only normals and shoryuken required!
More than once a 20k+ player would enter the lobby and it would be a close call!
Ryu’s normals are insanely good! Ryu’s specials are insanely good! Ryu’s ultras are insanely good!
I didn’t knew what I was doing, and I was either winning, or very close to it, without breaking a sweat!
Then I did the same with Sagat, Ken, Gouki. Same results!
I was playing and thinking “OMG what difference does it make when you have a 3/4 frame invincible reversal, eh?”
Where am I getting at?
I see people talking cautiously about some buffs that would make Gouken “too good”. And I need to disagree.
Gouken is not only “hard to master” and “high risk, high reward”. Gouken is broken as a character, he is BROKEN. He needs FIXING.
To me those “buffs” (tatsu hitting crouchers, kongo not losing to armor break, faster EX Senkugoshoha) are not buffs, they are fixes!
It’s not fair that I lose, not because my character is harder to play with, but because he has DEFECTS in design that prevents me to be optimal.
