Abel Match Videos

I thought it was just a rule that you aren’t supposed to jump-in recklessly, not something that should be explicitly stated every time someone mentions jump-ins.
Being that he relies on mixups and a command throw, I’ve thought just about everything involving Abel is a risk. Sometimes you have to take a chance if you want to do serious damage, otherwise you might as well just be playing Ryu, who doesn’t need FADC or a command throw to do over 200 damage. That’s just what I figured.

I don’t get to play in arcade tournaments or anything, so even when I play against a good Balrog or ridiculous Bison, I might win because they don’t know how to handle mixups or TT very well, being so few online Abel players. So I can only say what I’ve seen in videos and against online players. At least someone who seems reasonable like hfz commented on my post and straightened it out, rather than some elitist bastard who would rather boost his ego than help people. kthx

who/what are you talking about?

lol chillax man. its a fucking joke but come on… jumping in is terrible, of course you try to do it and take risks yeah but theres no real risk there, your just receiving damage. I’m guessing you dont constantly get punished for jumping in randomly, when i play with some of the players here (i might add the better ones cuz not gonna lie lots of shitty scrubs in socal, the ones you guys dont know) if i ever jump in i get punished, i see that they will do it consistently so why even bother? jumping in in general whether reckless or not is usually not that good, the only good time to jump in at your opponent is if you are trying to cross them up and even that in certain matches isnt very good. im no elistest, i dont need to boost my ego? why would i need to i dont even play this game that much anymore, pretty much just waiting for ssf4. theres so much that can go wrong jumping in that its not worth it.

Yeah, that’s fine. I think we should get off the jumping-in discussion.

Jumping in FTW!!

Yeah try going for a whole match with out jumping, starts making you think about using Abel’s normals more. s.lk , s,mp etc. That’s helped my game a lot recently.

Flash1227 (me) vs Kratos122 Guile. wacth and tell me what you guys think i need to improve on good bad or in between.

Improve on punishing Guile and putting pressure. You had some openings here and there, but it looked like you were too antsy. Practice those BnBs cause once you got them down, it will help you put pressure against your opponent and thats when you can learn how to bait stuff and play some footsies. I mean, it looked like you knew how to do them but you wouldn’t follow through (esp. with the resets). Also, you used to step kick but you never really followed up. Guile would jab or use another normal, and you can punish that with TT. If the Guile is good enough, he’ll start using reversal FKs, backdash, etc… You should probably work on your wakeup game too.

When I was at your stage of learning Abel (and SF4 in general), I would watch matches and read general matchup tips. I suggest you do the same and just test/imitate what you read and see, and once you find things that work for you, you’ll be able to adjust your game and apply pressure.

I know you’re just starting out so I can’t really get more in-depth. Just keep learning the basics and you’ll be more consistent against people your skill level. Keep learning and your Abel will turn out fine.

I should have another video of me against Guile and Gief. I hate Gief because once he has knockdown, it’s so easy for him to comeback. Destructive, I think this Gief is your friend, RM? He came down to our casuals just to fock my Abel up. =p

… lose a lot, and learn from them.

Reading, watching videos can help but the best way is still to fight tons of matches and figuring things during/after/in between the matches… and applying your tools properly. Like, sometimes when I play online, I dont aim to win as quickly as possible but maybe I want my opponent to jump in on me as much so I can practice my AA against different scenarios… and to make them jump at you can be hard if you’re against a decent/above average player, so you practice ground footsies to make them think they have no choice but to jump in for damage. Thats 2 things being practiced in one session hehe.

thanks for the advice…question also what are abel’s bnb combos and im going to be honest playing with Abel is very frustrating i can do his combos pretty well in practice but in matches i seem to fail to execute. thats why you saw me start a cod and not finish or miss time my mix up…lack of execution. but having said that i know the combos (i think) but i have no idea how to apply pressure, bait, set up, AA, wake up, everything you need to know basicly lol. im not ashamed to say it but i am new to this game so hey.

Thanks for the vids guys, some of those kinda help me with improving my Abel =) Just wondering, I may not be impressive or anything but am I allowed to post my own vids of my Abel in action ?

Yea you can

Keep up the good work and keep on fighting!!

Of course!! Why not? I play really badly and I’ve post them up before!!

The Abel family is all about sharing and helping each other!!

Mirror match against a friend. Tell me how I can improve XD

wow that was chaotic… seems like both players were mashing like crazy most of the time… not good(though i guess your friend’s abel is much much worse than yours)… nothing seems calculated at all, except the obvious fa on wakeup thing (even that was kinda overdone + bad timing at times… its like thats the only wakeup attack option you know…)

too many random shit, you dont throw specials around randomly like that… i was surprised to see random ex roll out of nowhere…

as how to improve, you can start by not doing random stuff all the time, CoD out of combos is RARELY useful and you’re just gonna get hit on recovery… fighting better opponents can help too. and watch some good abel videos out there to get a basic idea of how to play him(not saying you should copy people’s playstyle) but watch the vids and ask yourself why they do that etc…

knowing matchups are important too since you need to know what your opponent can do and how to escape/bait/punish their mistakes…

…and start doing proper combos/BnB, step kick dash s.hp is probably hard for you(which is no excuse to not learn it though), but at least get the cr.mp xx CoD fadc cr.hp xx lk roll falling sky… or any combos instead of just ex TT/wheel kick/focus crumple ultra your way to victory.

oh and one more thing… WALK MORE

I dont think you ever walked forward in the vid, all rolls and random cods wheel kicks or jump ins.

Yeah get that basic stuff down first, and learn abel’s normals.

p/s- i see you’re from singapore, you guys have your own gaming scene/website right? round1 or something(yeah, http://www.round1.sg/ ), you can get tips and learn from playing against good singaporean ( i know there are good people there, ive met some of them here) too.

Looks to me that he baited out the super pretty effectively !

Kifujin z seemed to be using c.lp x2 - TT all the time and the ryu player never got wise to it

To me it looked like that ultra would of been blockable but he must of caught him in the last few frames of recovery what a sick bait!

lol that ryu’s really not good… he let that abel jump in on him for free too many times, think i can count with one hand how many times he shoryu’d… that abel got away with too much shit… an unpunished blocked cr.hp? lucky

as for the super being punished by ultra, made sense since ryu’s super’s recovery is 51 frames… and abel’s ultra is 13+1 frames… though a blocked shinku hadouken gives ryu 11 frame advantage

that 2nd ryu also let that abel cross him up for free too many times…
