I don’t know why we have to have this long thread to debate what we all know is true.
3S is more technical, more challenging, and more interesting.
However both games are fun.

This is what I have been saying, I think the offensive zoning in turbo can be a bit linear at times. I appreciate the confrontational nature of 3s, and the best thing is that zoning is still useful but more"strategic"in the sense that u have to rely on different measures to be effective.
-3s sometimes has random outcomes, which is why i think some pro players dont like it. but randomness does make it more exciting to watch. (ie daigo comeback, i hate bringing it up but its a good example). But when you are a pro player, do u want to win or to please the crowd?
fact is,
-very 3s based players will not like sf4,
-very sf2 based players will not like 3s but will like sf4 since its back to basics
-both are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT games, u cant argue which is better or u get threads like this. Hell when sf3 came out, only 2 out of 11 players were from sf3. My friend even said when they were making sf3 initially ryu/ken wasnt even meant to be in the game, just to show they were were trying to come out with something completely new compared to sf2.
i used to love sf3, but now i think that was because i was mostly watching it (cuz of ffa ranbats and stuff). Combofiends podcast on gootecks also opened my eyes when he was talking how footsies was almost eliminated in sf3 and stuff, it made me understand why (edit) some og’s really really really dislike 3s
wtf! who are these og’s that dont like 3s?
is this guy serious?
Yeah I used to love 3s. I recently got back into it, b/c my bro loves to play it, and I’m his teammate on Evo. Needless to say, the game is balls. I hate it now… Though I will give it props.
3s Pros:
Genei-Jin! CAPCOM YOU LISTENING? We need an Ultra/Super for a character, that doesn’t just do an animation and do the work for you, but rather one that enhances your strength, speed, or somethin!
Combos during/after Super were nice. Makoto’s Abare Tosanami, Urien’s Aegis Reflector were the best.
Parry. I can’t parry at all, but I think it makes the game more interesting. Cool mechanics. Focus attack is still wayyyyy better though. And I can use it.
Animation. Top notch obviously
Cons:
Chun-Li, no combo top-tier. What a borefest. Though she’s gonna be my alt, for evo since I hate the game anyway, might as well win :bluu:
Ken. Easy combos. Borefest.
Too simple? Not trying to be hypocritical, since I really like SFHD, and thats even simpler hah.
So yeah the end game was good, but in the end its overrated. Sorry, I came on the Daigo vs. Justin Wong video too, and its only now I realized how mediocre the game is, with a few innovative exceptions. And then there was Chun.
wow thats a great post man, couldnt agree more. ^^^
so overrated, thats why i only play karnovs revenge now.
I think it’s better when I don’t have to unlearn bad guessing habits and can focus more on learning on how the game works in it’s most basic form (Only if I play a character besides Abel). Maybe then I can call 3S the better game. For now I prefer SF4. If I get to that level, then I’ll most likely change my opinion.
I also think it’s better for a beginner to play a game like ST or SF4 before they play SF3.
SF4 may be fine for a beginner, but ST is the most beginner unfriendly fighter in the SF series.
In my experience, it is beginner friendly in terms of learning what to do and when. Execution is another story. Case in point, playing RYU for about a week on GGPO brought me into the realm of when to attack, what normal to use and what beats what, etc. When to jump, what range, and so on. Although I didn’t play it long enough to embed it in other games, it’s a better start than, say, parrying normals instead of learning to stuff them with yours, freely jumping in and guessing the correct parry instead of timing a jump-in to counter a normal, etc.
Beginner friendly would be SF4, ST then 3s. You can at least mash in the first two games and get damage in where as if you mash in 3s you’re just looking to get punished to death! I honestly enjoy both 3s and SF4 but I haven’t played 3s in a while. I can definitely understand why people dislike 3s and why people dislike SF4 though. I started 3s as my first SF game, then I started playing ST right before the release of HDREMIX. HDREMIX taught me how important match-ups were and how to zone and footsies. When picking up SF4 I was able to apply what I learned from both ST and 3s into my game. So I like both SF4 and 3s! I do think that if you play a lot of SF4 and try to play either 3s or ST again it really fucks your game up. The easy inputs in SF4 and the combos starting with jab jab and etc is so BLAH!
Execution is half a fighting game.
Execution is so hard in ST some people find it impossible to play. Damage is so high that beginners can find themselves reaching for more quarters within 15 seconds, either against the CPU or other players.
Is it beginner friendly in terms of tactics or strategy? Yes and no. Jumping in ST can mean death and it can mean good things as well.
ST cannot be considered beginner friendly because every option has a risk associated with it. Generally that risk can be match altering.
Nothing in ST is free. No free super meters, no ultras. Nothing. In order to accomplish something you must also submit to a certain amount of risk.
So despite the things you may have learned by playing ST on GGPO, those learned things are also something that can get you killed. It’s part of the nature of ST.
ST is likely the least beginner friendly SF of all. (excluding possibly SF1)
Have you even played original ST? What exactly do you think mashing will get you other than a touch of death combo by your opponent?
The risks that are associated with the decision someone makes, how much damage a decision does when it does not go into plan, etc are all great practice to transfer onto other games. It’s even BETTER to learn in this situation when there are greater risks involved. If a beginner does not know the correct way to handle said risks, I sure as hell would teach him how to play ST for a couple of months instead of throwing him straight to 3S to rely on parrying, THEN stuffing normals, zoning, etc.
Again, execution is another story. It takes time for any beginner to get really good at execution in any game if they’ve never played a SF game. But, is it that much more time consuming than 3S to learn the basic fundamentals of a fighting game? Remember, we’re talking purely basic, correct fundamentals.
Except that has nothing to do with being beginner friendly, it just means ST is a better game to learn the how to play Street Fighter.
But it’s far easier to execute in 3s or SF4 than ST, which makes those games more beginner friendly in that regard.
A game being good for a beginner goes beyond just fundamentals. How forgiving a game is also determines how beginner friendly it is, and ST is the most unforgiving SF you can play.
Not only that, playing ST will teach you very little for 3s.
I pretty much agree with your first 3 points. On the last one, we’ll agree to disagree.
ST will get your execution down pat.
Wow I stated my opinion of 3s very elaborately, only to get negged the hell out of by people who who worships Daigo :O. Guess I should’ve expected.
And as for the game that is the least user friendly, it has to be SFII Turbo (not HD). Moves were hard as hell to pull, you can’t wakeup shoryu as much, and the better players would know how to walk-up throw.
I dont think its fair to compare 3s to 4 YET.
its like comparing st to new generation. you are comparing an initial build/world warrior of a series to a refined final version of another series.
imo, 3s is the superior game right now, but since sf4 only has a single build at this point, future versions of sf4 could overthrow 3s in my eyes.
people are whoring 4 right now because it is new, and its been a long time coming. we’ve had a 10 year sf drought and this game shows up to grant us salvation. Im not saying its bad or anything. In fact, I love it. All im saying is that it is too early to make the call 3s > < = sf4
its cool to play fast and never gets old…in addition i wish this can be downloaded for the PS3 in PSN
This.
3rd strike rules !!! thatz tha bottom line
