3S for the SSF4 player..?

Don’t worry about putting in time. Just play the game because its fun.
No one plays 3s in America now for the prize money or the pride of winning a 2000 man tourney. We all continue to play because we enjoy it.

This. But keep in mind there are no sheep left in this community. Everyone here plays the game well. Know that there aren’t any sharks here either. Everyone you ask for help or advice, will give you what they think is the right answer. If you learn to listen to all and not just one, you’ll take your game even further.

Quoted for truth. Though, I do think Alex has a decent chance against Chun. But I’ve come to realize that despite smart playing, Alex has no chance in hell against Yun. So I now pick Ken in that matchup and do a lot better.

It’s not putting in time. Just play the game and enjoy it. You’ll learn over time and if you end up liking the game more down the road you won’t have wasted your time. If you don’t stick with it you won’t have lost much. Just enjoy it. If you don’t enjoy it don’t bother, it isn’t worth it if you’re not having fun.

At this point, it’s not even about putting in the time. America in general never really stood a chance against the Japanese except for a few top players, and all we can do now is enjoy the game and help each other level up. The game is mad fun, THAT’S where the time comes from.

Also, don’t worry about trying to rushdown just yet. You’ll gradually start going more on the offense once you get comfortable with your character and the matchups. Nothing wrong with playing defensive either; the better your blocking is, the longer you live. ;V Though it does depend on the character down the road…

I meant what tournaments.

I’m personally not convinced 3SO is going to revive the tourny scene as much as some people might think, but that doesn’t mean you can’t play for fun obviously.

You’d be surprised how much you can turtle in 3s, it’s just a different type of turtling I guess.

3SO will never restore 3rd Strike to what it was in 2004-2008, but it could help bring some new players in if the last remaining figureheads in the worldwide 3s community start pushing it at tournaments.

The fact that it is on the tournament console of choice (360/PS3) does it alot of favours. In major tournaments its easier to go “hey theres a copy of 3rd strike on a 360 harddrive laying around, lets organize a tournament” than to be stuck with PS2’s and no one has a stick.I think the community will be somewhat like HDR’s in the end,in that it will have all the top players that ‘mained’ the game still playing it and a slight injection of new players that stick around.

That is if 3SO delivers an arcade perfect port, and for the love of god let it use HDR’s button config.

Wasn’t necessarily hoping 3SO would bring a resurgence of the game in the tournament setting. I mean it already has a presence at some of the major ones like SCR. I think that’s plenty good considering its age.

As a new player though, i was hoping it would be released with in-game tools to improve execution (inputs, trials, dummy modes) and rank based match making. WISHFUL THINKING?? Right now on GGPO, just difficult to have fun when everyone you play destroys you in 35 secs. Need to be matched up with players who know the game mechanics but are not sharks looking for combo dummies.

EDIT: I think for the game to have more than the diehard fanbase and a few newcomers to push this game another 5-10 years, capcom should consider not doing a perfect arcade port. That will piss diehards off a bit but in the end exposure of the game is more important. A playable unbroken Gill, a blend of all 3 games stories, backgrounds, music and DEFINITELY something should be done about Yun and Chun. New players do not want an equivalent sf4 Sagat to completely turn them off. Mechanics of the game stay the same, but it needs an infusion of freshness.

Oh dear.

The ‘infusion of freshness’ is it being released on 360/PS3 at all. I would bet that the majority of people playing SSF4 right now have not really played or even touched 3S. How much fresher can it be if you’ve never played it. I doubt it’ll revitalize anything but I do think it’ll keep it being played at events due to being on 360/PS3.

Oh dear indeed.

Ps. I never understood the whole “I love playing scrubs so I can rape them for free in 10 sec. mentality.”

Your not accounting for the the fact that for every 1 player whose played sf4 that has returned to 3s, there are another 5 players that have simply left the game behind. I think a “buffed” game has the potential to definitely revitalize the franchise where a bit for bit copy of the game simply caters to the hardcore elitists fanbase only.

Yeah I know this ruffles some feathers but look at what tweaks did for sf4. vanilla was a sagat, ryu, akuma festival. ssf4 has made this a thing of the past, and AE will be even better. Look, people balked at baseball for division play and now we realize that near single handedly saved the sport. Change can be good (sometimes)

1- No matter how many tweaks SFIV gets, at the end of the day it still sucks.
2-3S doesn’t need even one tweak from an arcade perfect port. As long as that happens, the 3s community will stay alive.
3-You probably will never beat someone like me, but you can still get a head start on other potential new players before the game hits on PS3/XBOX360, and kick their asses while learning the game more and more (and having fun!)

But it also completely separates the US and Japanese playerbase. This would remove a lot of steam from the 3s community.

I honestly think super was a step back for the SF4 series, so I’m super against doing to 3s what super did to vanilla.

Matter of opinion. Because alot of people think 3s sucks too. 3s didn’t revamp the FGC, the “sucky” sf4 did. Least give it some due.

I respect your opinion (and value your feedback in general) but there isn’t a single noteworthy sf4 player that will agree with this. NOT ONE
Same said noteworthy player may think sf4 may be a step back in the series overall, TRUE, but ssf4 is almost unanimously praised as step forward in its class.

lets be real. sf4 didnt revamp the community with a better game.

please dont start the pro sf4 arguments in here, cuz youre in the wrong section of srk to be doing that. this thread is to help you adjust to your transition to 3s. so lets keep it at that.

Actually a fair few players feel that sf4 is a step backwards. Even Daigo was abit pissed that they didn’t include a block meter (ala CVS2) to a ridiculously over defensive game.

SF4 revitalised the scene, true, but it is certainly not a step forward. The game is just too dumbed down.

I can understand where you’re going with that. I guess I was lucky when I first started because I started playing back when my other friends sucked at the game too. We all gradually leveled up and now I feel I’ve seriously gotten way better than I did even three years ago. But not a lot of new players may get to have that same experience.

I do feel as if 3rd Strike could’ve benefitted from a VF4/SF4-style training mode during the PS2 release, instead of having to relentlessly seek out Youtube vids and then ask around forums as to how it was done. Considering the rave reviews SF4’s training mode has gotten, I do hope that 3SO gets the same treatment.

…I will never agree with this line of thought, however. I want the game I loved for years to be on current-gen consoles, not some watered-down shit aimed to breast-feed newer players. HDR split the ST community in the US. 3SO gets rebalanced, we’re going to be playing something completely different from the Japanese and that will NOT do the game any favors.

… Boy. If you’re getting beaten down by Chun/Yun and you’re playing Mid-tier characters then you’re doing something wrong.

SSF4 is just a notch above Smash Bros. and I could see what they were going for. When I was very young I couldn’t play fighters because I couldn’t do the moves, than Smash came out on the N64 and I loved it because I didn’t have to learn inputs or anything like that. I actually got quite good with Capt. Falcon. But when I took the time to learn moves and combos, I actually appreciated the older fighters much more.

So basically what you’re saying Trini is: Thanks everyone for 150+ posts but I played 5 hours of 3S and I’m terrible.

It’s understandable you’re being destroyed by most people. A lot of us have in one form or another been playing the game a long time.

It’s not fun to be beat on endlessly without time to learn but that’s really what friends are for to be honest. Convince some of yours to give 3S a whirl and learn it together. That’s how I started playing 3S and Alpha. You can try things out, not focus only on winning using whatever abusable (for your current skill level) moves you have and instead focus on learning how the game works/feels. When learning a new game it’s easy to fall into traps against similar level players. You might play someone who consistently falls for some easy to deal with but damaging move. You might end up abusing it because it works. That isn’t a good way to learn and creates bad habits. When you’re with friends you can decide to play a bit more freely, instead focusing on understanding moves not winning. Just kind of sparring to understand what 3S is all about.

If you have no friends to do this with I’m sorry.

As for the rebalanced 3S idea: Been argued to death already and I don’t think there is a strong case for it. You have to remember Capcom is a business here and I don’t think it’s in their interest to try rebalancing a beloved 11+ year old game. Considering MVC3 and then probably DLC for SSF4 will come out in not too long I really doubt they’ll be putting in that much work for 3SOE.
