But as far as SF4 players not playing previous SF’s, isn’t that how it always is? 3s’s playerbase at its height didn’t trickle down to alpha 3/2. There’s pretty much always gonna be a couple groups of people…
-The people that start with 1 game and stay with it (most of us)
-The people that focus on the most popular game (majority)
-The people that kick ass at every game at the same time (Tokido, Nuki)
i gotta give props to aku’s point cuz everyone forgets how much hate 3s had when it was the hot shit.
3s had MORE than its fair share of haters. most of them could not get past the parry mechanic and how it is used. couldn’t get used to no-button footsies or ‘answers for everything’ (which is a little bit of a misnomer to view as an absolute in 3s imo but in comparison to any other game is 100% true)
i don’t really mean to make a broader point by emphasizing this its just funny to remember how popular hating on 3s was when it was top dog.
third strike’s rise to fame in america was already rising from the grave once. cream rises to the top.
3s/mvc2 best era of fgs ever.
also i feel bad for cvs2 players i’m sure allot of them miss their departed brother but they don’t have as many active mourners as far as im aware.
lets pour some out the fourty for our homie in spirit cvs2
I agree with this for best fighting games. sf4 is good to get more players in the scene, 3s will be loved forever by the true fans, 4th down will prob never happen but id like to see a sfv continuing from the sfIII storyline w 2d graphics and a similar engine to sfIII.
Look at all of the things they had to dumb down to “lower the barrier”. execution for example. dumb downed execution does effect character design. thats why the cast of 4 is so linear. every new character in SF4 reaches its potential 4-6 months after its release. easy execution and a system that does not allow players to make their characters evolve is bad for SF. IMHO
They are already on the 3rd incarnation of 4. they’ll nerf and buff some charcaters here and there, add some new characters just to keep interest in the game, but aside from additions like that the game has already reached its full potential. which is just crazy to me.
they way they did it does not force or motivate a new player to learn the basics. no need for motivation if the characters are not that complex and if the games system does not allow for any type of growth. and if i can get a dp or mash out ultras in block strings with no problems why the hell would a new player think he needs to learn the basics?? He already thinks he’s nice in SF
And thats why its the old guard that will continue to win these tournaments. And that is not good for SF. so they opened the gates but all they did was create a huge army of scrubs that they now cannot afford to abandon in future releases and/or games. the game does not bring out the competitor in new players and that why we have people in diago’s pool asking for his autograph during tournament.
But they were wrong with the 3S crowd. The complexity of the game forced strike players to learn the basics (from what I’ve seen anyway) and i dont mean to hate on the new cats even though it may come off that way lol. i still enter SF4 tournaments cuz i enjoy SF. but i didnt want or need Capcom to give me an extension of 3S in SF4. i wanted a game that was deep and needed skill to master. but thats just me
i stared with A2, got strung out on 3s then learned ST. At times i think i’m just a dick who hates SF4 only players. lol
point taken
I’m gonna take Yuuki’s advice and just shut the hell up about it now. but i cant front…I just dont like the new direction of SF.
It’s possible to have the attitude that people can enjoy whatever they want but that you don’t agree with their attitudes or what they enjoy.
That’s completely fine. I think everyone should find something they can really get into. I just found myself completely disenchanted by SF4 once I’d spent enough time on it. New blood is always great and hopefully the income will lead to all sorts of excellent games that I can get into down the line but right now I’m not digging it really. The game is not fun to learn. I find 3S a much more engaging experience which is why I returned to it after a few month break. 3S was also the first SF I really tried to understand because I thought it was so tremendous so it could equally be rose tinted glasses.
hold dat: That’s fine, and I’m not trying to take a higher moral ground or anything like that. There are a lot of communities for games I hate like DoA and Final Fantasy so I can’t say much, haha. And it’s fine if you play SF4 too, I don’t really care too much about that. There are guys who hate 3S and still play it in tournaments, and that doesn’t bother me.
Dood you certainly may be right that the lower barrier to entry has created a new generation missing some solid fundamentals. No question.
But your comment about linear is pure BS and simply sf4 hate just for the sake of it man. What does a dp shortcut and a tad more forgiving input window really have to do with character design? How is sf4 character gameplay design that different from STurbo in this respect?
Some character potentials were never even fleshed out until super and all of a sudden without major buffs characters like Fei, Abel and Cammy overnight their mains leveled up their shit dramatically.
Certainly there are linear characters like Balrog or Bison but there are handfuls of others that some gifted players have been developing some really dope shit we hadn’t seen before.
Is there a ceiling, sure. But I think your over generalizing a bit here. I’ve seen 2004 yang vids and his gameplay doesn’t look drasticaly different in new vids posted by the shend. Christ the game is 2 years old. 3s has had 11 years for people to find new shit.
I think what he means by linear is there aren’t many options in each situation. Not necessarily linear in playstyle. If he is thinking about that then yeah SF4 is a more linear experience.
I think of it like this. SF4 has many elements in it that dictate the pace of the game without players having that much say in the matter. It’s like it has a steady and easy to follow beat. 3S on the other hand is like jazz. Because of parry mainly but also the lack of an ultra meter 3S’s speed and rhythm constantly change to a greater degree then I’ve either seen or experienced in 4. SF4 has a right move for the right time. 3S is a little less specific due to parry. This includes doing no move at all which is much rarer to see in 4 because the game lacks a universal move to create offense from defense.
This is more what I feel hold dat is getting at but if not I apologize. This is how I feel though. Both games are good for their own reasons. The things that make 3S good are just more interesting/exciting to some of us and although it is almost certainly a varied number of reasons I feel like the power the game puts in player’s hands is exhilarating to most of us.
Trini, will you shut the fuck up about SFIV?
You need the shit slapped out of you, hard. You didn’t ever have intentions to come in here and try to turn to 3S. You wanted to troll in a more subtle way about how great SFIV is. No good or decent player (especially 3S ones) likes SFIV at all. The game is disgusting and fucking lame to all degrees. If you want to discuss 3S further and want to know from us how to play and get into it, etc, cool, but drop all this bullshit SFIV talk now.
I came here for help adding 3s to my list of fgs i play.
And for the most part alot of people have chimed in subjectively and given good stuff to go with. On the other hand, trolls like you 2 find it a nice opportunity to take swipes at sf4. You people are the ones who derailed the thread. I’m not going to just sit here listen to a bunch of sf4 hate when I’m just asking what do I need to adjust to play 3s. Only natural for me to respond to some people mouthing off EMOTIONAL nonsense.
And NOT FUCKING ONCE did i come in here and say 3s is crap or anything. I’m trying to learn the game!!! YOU are the ones telling me how “ONLY DUMBASSES PLAY SF4”
So who exactly is really the troll again??
Look at the responses by Tebbo, or Pherai or circle masher or aku vs yours: big dam difference.
someone ask a question about this or that in 4 compared to how you do it in 3, then someone else please delete every irrelevant post and we could have a useful thread back on track.
instead of asking for close DELETE YOUR RESPONSES THAT ARE OFF TOPIC AND ASK EVERYONE ELSE WHO DID THAT TO ALSO DO SO THANKS.
there are several mvc2 threads that had all the clutter deleted out while leaving the information and stand as very useful for having done so.
the purpose of the thread still stands, to create a primer/q & a for people who want to learn 3s when their first game was ssf4/sf4.
this is in actuality a very good idea because many sf4 players are curious about 3rd strike and im quite certain a number of them would like it more.
its like people see trash on the street and decide to fix it by throwing a bag of garbage onto the pile with “don’t pollute” scrawled on it in sharpie and then pat themselves on the back for “helping out”
The problem is (and my apologies if this is considered derailment) is that SSF4 players don’t want to be good at this. They just want to win. At least that’s my experience with people.
