3S for the SSF4 player..?

One may not be able to quantify what makes 3s better, but it is possible to quantify that 3s has more options than other SF games in nearly all situations. In a hypothetical situation in SF4, player 1 may have the option to do a-g(a,b,c,d,e,f, or g being variables of the player’s options), while in a hypothetical situation in 3s, player 1 may have options a-t. More doesn’t always mean better, but in the case of 3s vs other sf games, one could argue that the game is deeper due to the extended options(from other sf games) being balanced and there is virtually a counter to every option - a counter for every counter. More counters requires more thinking of steps ahead, which results in more multilayered mind games.

As for 3s for the SSF4 player, I say play early SF2 (Champion Edition or Hyper Fighting - not Super Turbo) if at all posssible (against friends, online, or even the computer). SF2 has way less options than sf games these days, so you’ll be able to break the game down quicker and get a firm grasp of fundamentals. Then, build upon that foundation in 3s. 3s still has basic sf2 elements in it; there are just more options to consider when weighing a situation. This may not be the most practical way to prepare for 3s since hardly anyone plays these games anymore, but I still consider them to be like a prerequisite, a guide when normally you’d have little to no direction in playing a game where “you can do almost anthing you want”.

**Footsies in 3s.
**
Giving me alot of trouble. I worked diligently to learn how to play footsies in sf4 and do pretty well. So coming to sf3 i thought that at least I’d have a footsie game with some adjustments. I’m not sure what it is, but my attacks just get stuffed 90% of the time. Not even talking about be parried yet. Thinking maybe i needed a speed adjustment since sf4 is much slower, but still no dice.

Am I missing something, or just one of those things that for a sf4 player comfortable in that universe just a more difficult transition?

Typical footsies I play are walking in and out of poke range and fish for whiff punishes or going on the counter poke when i “think” a block string has ended by walking back a tad, then hitting a cr. mk xx. Block strings in this game seem to never end though lol

So, what you’re saying is there are options within options? That a variety of options from the human mind can win the match? A game in which my mind is–BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

WE NEED TO GO DEEPER!

I think it’s just lack of experience really. To be good with spacing you need to know you and your opponents attacks pretty well. You need a good grasp of the game overall so really that will just come with time the more you play. It’ll be slow but you’ll see how things evolve. SF4 will not help you with that. In SF4 it’s more like if he does ‘x’ then ‘y’ will punish it. 3S has a few more options due to parry. Spacing isn’t really a thing you can just learn like a combo since it’s basically reading the rhythm of the game and the intentions of your opponent. You’re just not in 3S mode yet. Keep at it.

Not sure if you’re just playing on GGPO but if so unless you’re playing against someone with a ping under 50 you’re going to have a difficult time getting the feel for a lot of the game. Things that seem really strong online aren’t nearly as difficult to deal with offline in many cases so don’t feel like you’re just not getting it. You’re just learning in a difficult environment if that’s the case.

Basically he just needs to play the game. You can lead a horse to water…

but you can’t expect him to bring his own shampoo?

personally i think sf4 footsies are whack so its not going to be something you can just bring over. you need to get a feel for 3s, steal strategies you see used on you. watch vids and copy them in the hopes of eventual understanding. what character are you using? im still not quite sure from your posts.

Been playing around with alex, yang and ken. Cant fight the urge to play Alex like Gief tho, so I’m going to stop that venture and try out Urien instead for now.

I don’t even know what “playing Alex like Gief” means. Do you just stand there pushing toward fierce hoping to go through fireballs that aren’t being thrown at you? Do you try to anti-air lariat every time someone jumps at you? Whiff boot into powerbomb?

What does that meeeeeaaaann?

I’d imagine you’d try playing Hugo like Gief, but Alex?

You’ll probably have a fun time learning zoning and footsies with Urien, but that’s all he has until he gets meter for Aegis. He’s a tough character to learn but in the end can be very fun and rewarding. If you’re having a hard time figuring out the character, try Tyrant Slaughter first just to get a feel of his normals and as a reversal crutch, since it punishes a hell of a lot more stuff than Aegis. Once you get used to that, then try transitioning to Aegis Reflector. You’ll have to gradually get a bit more offensive once you get the meter, but you gain some scary mixups.

If they went with SF3:4th____, i would have never gotten into fighting games. So I’m thankful (I think, more stress playing these dam games than not, lol)

Yeah, I’ll agree. It’s good they didn’t go with 4th Strike. It wouldn’t really have helped anybody out, especially Capcom themselves.

I hate SF4 with an exaggerated passion, but even I acknowledge that it’s done wonders for revitalizing the fighting game scene. It’s the best decision they could have made, and did.

I don’t know who the hell paul gale is or how much he blew Taki enomoto (i dont know who this is either, fuck looking these guys up, theyre full of shit) to get this unbelievable story out of him, but I do recall the intro to 3rd Strike:

3rd strike’s intro has the following words, “THE EPIC TRILOGY UNFOLDS”.
Does this refer to SF3: NG, SI, and 3s? Or, does it refer to SF1, 2 and 3?
Either way, it is written in 3s - there shouldn’t have been another in the 3 series made and there shouldn’t have been an SF4. Either way, some scrub producer was gonna cash in and ruin the franchise’s good name. Either way 3rd strike is the future. I hope Ono makes SF5 and it turns out to be 3s reissued.

What is with the regression of new SF4 players going to 3rd Strike? Just because it goes backwards numerically does not really mean that you can apply things from 3rd Strike in SF4. I just don’t understand this and it seems to be rampant among newer players.

If you really want to learn things that you can apply to SF4 you should be playing ST. Maybe even a little A2.

A fourth incarnation of the 3 series would lose the word “STRIKE” in the title though

Street Fighter 3: 4th Down lol

yes it has revitalized the genre but it has created an army of new players that will not be cool with Capcom giving us a game thats deep or very technical in the future. We truly do have an incredible love hate relationship with SF4 lol

The future does not look very promising or maybe some genius at capcom can find a way to satisfy all spectrums of the the scene. but Capcom abandoned the hardcore audience with 4. Good for business but they shitted on the people who loved SF before 4

I guess because I’m new to the scene I 'm missing something… but how did lowering the barrier of entry hurt the franchise exactly?

Top 8-16 players at EVO, SCR, etc are more or less the same dudes that were playing 3s, playing mvc, playing tvc when those games were in their prime. I don’t see “scrubs” placing anywhere high in these tournaments. All lowing the barrier to entry did is allow a new generation to embrace an entire genre when everybody is go-go for MW2. Doesn’t mean that high level play is absent. That’s absurd. Yeah sf4 has some easy mode shit in there, but throw 75% of that out the window when dudes like momochi, daigo, wong, ross are playing.

SF2 was all about the mantra easy to play hard to master. 3s went with hard to play, I wish you luck to master. sf4 to me seems like it just went back to the old formula that won over everybody from both spectrums: from your casual next door neighbor, to gamepro mag, down to tournament icons valle and choi. shrug

why are we discussing sf4 in this thread or forum? i dont care lol

play what you like.

Well-said. I’m a 3S die-harder and have no passion for SF4 outside of casual sessions here-and-there, but I totally agree: lowering the entry bar did no harm to the SF series. I have problems with SF4 but lowering the entry barrier definitely aint one of them.

I kind of do and don’t agree with this. It’s true that it spawned a whole slew of players that may get too accustomed to 4 and may not consider playing or even acknowledging any of the past SF games, but still it’s just one game and not everyone may end up satisfied with it one way or another. There’re people who wanna try out other games and for those that wanna try out 3S, then awesome.

At this point for 3S enthusiasts it shouldn’t even be about “does Capcom hate us or not”. They haven’t really touched 3S up to this point anyway, and with what appears to be a serious attempt to try and cater to us(let’s try to abandon skepticism for a minute and say that they really are going to try making this a good arcade-perfect release), all we can do is just keep on keeping the game alive.

And besides, 3S players have been in the same situation as SF4 players in the past. The games are different, but old-school players pissed on the game and argued that it’s going to create a whole slew of guessers who don’t know fundamentals. You guys can keep hating if you want, I’m just saying the reason why I don’t really piss on the playerbase as much as the game.
