Not to pick on you, but you don’t sound like you’ve been playing games very long because you should already know all this stuff.
Hell, I agree with you. I play hugo and Q because I think they are awesome. I use collossus and charlie in mvc2. That is why there is casual play to help practice and find your best techniques. More importantly, to have fun.
All that shit goes out the window when you play to win. Top tiers ftw.
So when are we banning yellows from our tournies? I’m tired of being the white kid losing because of his skin color. It has absolutely nothing to do with skill, it’s all skin color I’m telling you.
A lot of the problem with games like 3S and CVS2 is that a lot of the characters DO play in a similar fashion. Viscant made a very good post on this a while ago in which he compared CVS2 Benimaru to Cammy. They pretty much have the same plan, but Cammy just does it a fuckload better than Benimaru, due to her dumb(or awesome, depending on your perspective:rolleyes: ) normals. This can be seen in 3S as well. Ryu is basically a watered down Ken with a funky super. He has basically the same plan of attack, but Ken has more options than Ryu, so he executes that plan better than Ryu. If winning is your intention(and remember, winning is fun:wgrin: ), then picking these characters would be beneficial.
The important things to remember are that fighters are way more mental than anything else(3S especially), and no fighter will ever be truly balanced. There are some close ones(ST, GG/, VF4, A3, for example), but even they have tiers. The top tier for those games just isn’t as far away from the rest of the cast.
“I also just want to note that i still think allowing all super arts would greatly enhance the usage of low/mid tier characters in 3s in competitive play.”
I never get this argument. Sure it hurts Chun, but now Yun can have 2 stocks of Genei Jin, and now Genei-Jin lasts twice as long. Just makes him even worse.
I’ve wondered the same, at least in respects to Yun’s riduculous super. Ken is arguable in terms top tier. He plays well against anyone but is hardly unfair in most matchups. Does Yun even have any bad matchups.
Only thing i have to say is. If ppl using the same character “ruins” a game then marvel shouldve been dead a long time ago. If the game is exciting, fun and hype then ppl will play it.
IMO, it’s far worse in 3S than CvS2 though, due in part to the almost complete absence of ranged play thanks to the parry.
Or:
When the game forces every character to play the same way, it’s inevitable that a few characters (the ones that do the same thing everyone else is trying to do, but better) are gonna come out on top.
It ruins nothing! people don’t play the same even if they pick the same person.
and there should be alot of predictability If there are only a handful of good ways to play such and such character.
Ok, people saying saying there is no ‘range play’ (zoning/keeping distance) in 3S should tell you that this thread is dead.
Btw, that Viscant quote/rant I can’t even read with a straight face…its so off, I can tell he doesn’t even play 3rd strike. That must be from like the year 1999 and even still it’d be off…
Close this thread, whoever…unless some more people who actually know 3rd strike can say something worth reading.
It’s cause it’s easier to win with Chun, ken, and yun. No one wants to put in the time to learn Necro, dudley or anyone else. Us americans want to beast and we want to beast NOW!! And that mentality is condusive to chun and ken play. What I have to say to all the non top-tier players is, keep on using the chars you like. The last tier ranking I saw from Japan had Makoto and Yang in teh top with chun, ken and yun, and Akuma and Dudley next in line. The tiers keep changing, who knows maybe one day necro will be up there. Oh and one more thing, I’m tired of people saying that the japanese can rape with necro, but we can’t. You act like we’re second class citizens, just practice and play smart. And PARRY!
Edit: just read viscants post and laughed my ass off.
-That’s why there are high and low parries, so you can mix that up
-You can also bait out their parry
-Lastly and most importantly, If you’re at range for one of your pokes, you don’t have to throw it out!
Sounds like viscant plays real predictable, and prolly just got his shit parried 24/7
allowing all super arts would be interesting. Though as a 12 player I wouldn’t really benefit. Sure I get XNDL and XCOPY but XFLAT is still quite useless. And that’s what kinda made the game. At when NG came out it seemed gay, but turns out pickin the right super can lead to victory or w/e u know what I mean.
–That post is from 2002 when I was still winning SoCal tournaments/placing high in major tournaments at 3s.
–Regardless of date, the main point of that stands. There are a lot of situations where you can guess parry totally safely. For example, Issei’s Yun in Evo this year: Issei would use parry to negate 50/50 situations by jumping and buffering parry. It was basically taking a situation that should be a disadvantage (having a 50/50) and creating an advantage out of it. (Side note: this is also because of how comparatively hard it is to set up meaties in 3s, a flaw that is really really large yet something nobody talks about. To quote Buktooth from IRC: if this was in CvS2, people would have been bitching for life, but since it’s in 3s, people just accept it.) If the other player did a long recovery move, Issei would get a combo or if what he parried was inconsequential, he got what he wanted to get anyways (divekick pressure). This is an example where 3s engine helps you out.
Another more common example, Ken vs. Urien slightly inside Ken’s sweep range. Ken can tap down just guessing fairly often hoping to pick off a poke because Urien can only hit him low or do random shoulder charge/stand forward neither of which is a very good idea because it’s (fairly) easy to react block those while you were fishing. This is just one example; there are many examples where you can go fishing and be 75% safe or so. This happens fairly often in 3s. The game basically gives you a huge opportunity here where theoretically it was trying to give advantage to the other side. See also: every Urien vs. Ken match over the past 4-5 years.
–The secondary point of this post still stands also. There is no character type like Vega or O.Sagat in 3s because parry eliminates them. This is beyond question.
–3s back then was a monumentally dumb game and still is, just for different reasons. A lot has changed but a lot has stayed the same. The game is basically exactly as balanced as it has been for 5 years; if anything Yun and Ken are even more broken now than they were then.
Carry on with the thread which is by the way my favorite thread going on SRK right now. 3s fanboys trying to disprove what everyone’s known for 5 years now about character balance is like the height of comedy to me.
I never understood why people have to explain why they like something. I think a game is ruined if no one likes to play anymore, not if no one wants to watch.
I love to watch football, but my brother, and many people not into sports, are bored to tears. He can play Warcraft III for hours on end, I just don’t like it at all.
Quantifying the reason you like something is nice, but to argue how valid your like/dislike is, is rather pointless.
This is of course all under my understanding of “ruined”, which hinges on the people who play, more than their audience. So if you like it have fun, if you don’t…don’t, but I very well doubt a boring final means the game is ruined for all those who like playing it.
So some of you are saying to ban characters in Third Strike? Sounds interesting…afterall Gouki has been banned for 12 years in ST. Also, some may say that some grooves and/or characters should be banned in CVS2, and Steve Fox in Tekken, blah, blah, blah. In my opinion I don’t think we should have any characters banned except for the shin characters like Shin Gouki, etc. Having normal Gouki playable in an ST tournament or HSF2:AE tournament wouldn’t be so bad. Aslo, what about allowing Evil Ryu and Orochi Iori in CVS2? We can try it out. We can also try out 2 of the same characters, etc. Maybe even allow Gill to be playable in 3S. Seems like a Yun or Chun can take out a Gill player easily. Just a thought…
Even though console torunaments are becoming more popular these days, people always want to play a version that’s as close as possible to the arcade version. Akuma in ST, Gill in 3S, E. Ryu/O. Iori in CvS2, etc, are not selectable in the arcade versions (they’re even more broken than any top tiers people bitch about) therefore people ban those characters in tournaments. As for picking 2 or 3 of the same character in CvS2, I don’t see the point in doing that. If that’s the case, I’d rather simply play on single mode, which IMO is less interesting and has less variety than the regular ratio mode (I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I’d be very happy to have to fight 2 Blankas, 2 Sagats, 2 A-Bisons, etc).
