Nothing has changed, just most of the fanboys are getting a bit older now and are realising that after 3 EVO finals, 3S isn’t quite the magical game they thought it was. Instead of whinging, go out there and start practicing with your low-tiers and kick some ass. Asking for people to bring in outside rules so mid to low tiers have a better chance is just the weakest ass shit I’ve ever had the unfortunate experience of reading. And the highest tier character I’ve ever played is prolly Urien.
If you want to muck around with system direction in your lounge room to make little tournies with your friends then go ahead. But don’t expect to walk in to EVO or SBO playing like that. Maybe if someone made there own website called 3s-systemdirection.com or something and started offering tourney prizepools. But I doubt that is going to ever happen.
Have you been living in denial for the past few yrs. lol. It’s already been established from tourney play that Yun/Ken/Chun is the top. Stop living under a rock.
Yes but the fact remains most of them ALL PLAY THE SAME. That gets boring fast. It bored the hell out of me…still does. I stopped watching 3s match vids . I see 50 zillion Ken-Chun vids and they all play JWong style instead of doing their own stuff. Soooo boring. I made it a point to NOT play Chun the same old same old because it is soooooooooo played out.
banning yun chun ken would just uncover another character that would dominate the rest of the cast so throw that option out of the window.
Tournies in the US are all for money so when that cash is on the line people are gonna pick the character that they believe will maximize their chances of winning, even if its not the top 3, but usually it is or right up there.
I’ve never played 3S at a high level, but I understand the whole tier thing you’re talking about. The only fighter I played religiously was Marvel and I played that for a good 4 years before stopping entirely. I’ve gone to a few tournaments in NJ and Philly and although I strived to be as good, if not better, than some of the top players I watched, I knew it was hopeless. I couldn’t win with Omega Red, Jill, or Colossus as my point characters. I deluded myself into thinking I could win at a high level. All everyone wanted to play was MSP and Santhrax. It got boring to see the same characters getting picked even though they were the best. And I got bored because of it. That’s why I’ll always enjoy a match with at least 1 bottom/mid character (i.e. Joe Zaza’s double Wolverine).
Why do people always say that? Makoto, Dudley, Yang and Akuma are right below but the thing about those characters is that they’re not for everybody (unlike Ken for example), and the other characters do better against them (mostly) than they do against the current top 3. I don’t think anyone here really wants 3 characters banned in a game that’s pretty close to being somewhat balanced. Maybe a less drastic measure.
It’s not that easy. Nobody wants to be the one to suggest something that the entire world disapproves of. Especially since it could divide the global player base if the Japanese don’t want anything changed, or other regions of one country. Big tournaments would be a disaster if people can’t decide on a standard.
To be honest I just don’t agree with the problem you guys have, if you ask people what 3s matches really affected them, got them into the game, or excited them, you’ll probably see one of these on the list:
While some people personally might like Kuroda or KSK or some other players, character variety is not a top priority when looking for competitive games.
As for the finals, there’s only one real reason it was boring: all the americans lost early. Can you say it would be just as boring if pyro was at the top of winners, with valle and nuki in losers finals? I don’t think so. Even Duc vs sanford only had one uncommon character among the 6 chosen, do you think it was really spiral that caused the excitement? SF is about the players, not the characters.
The only 2D-fighter I can think of that isn’t a “top tier whore affair” is GG.
That would make Makoto, Dudley & Urien top tier. Way to go.
Indeed.
Ryu - SA3, opponent stunned, SA2, game over
Makoto - Karakusa, s.HP xx SA2, some basic follow-up, opponent stunned, SA1, game over
Alex - Stungun Headtbutt, opponent stunned, HP Flash Chop xx Hyperbomb, game over
Yun - double Genei-Jin bullshit
Chun Li - c.MK xx SA2, sjc, reset, SA1 when opponent lands
No, thanks. I’d rather play the game as it is, with one SA.
Whether people like it or not, tiers exist in any fighting game, period. There’s not such thing as a perfect balanced game. There will always be a character or a group of characters that’s stronger and a character or group of characters that’s weaker, you just have to accept it and adjust or strategies accordingly. If you ban whatever character is top tier, some other character will become top tier, somebody else will bitch about the new top tier, and around we go again.
theres really nothing to be said here. every game comes down to the best characters /items/weapons/strategies or whatever because thats how things at high levels work. more efficent + less work. if people wanna whine about tiers or top strategies they should just stop playing competitively. cuz when it comes down to it, the most important thing in competition is winning, why not maximize your chances to do so?
Top tiers will always be used for high level play and tournaments. There is no changing this.
For 3s, this means you will always see the “top 3” in the finals.
Will it come across as boring? Maybe, but 3s has never been a flashy game. Also, even if it came down to a mirror match there is still lots of skill involved, you don’t pick chun and start winning automatically.
Banning super arts? GTFO, what kind of noob bs is that?
Well i understand wat everyone is saying…i suppose this evo was a bit of a reality check for me seeing as how im such a big fan of 3s and i was so bored by the final results. I know that in certain occasions low tier/id tiers can win but it just seems like every other major has chun, yun and ken being the top guys. I dont wanna just continue on repeating stuff everyone else has already said…but i think the results of this evo have set a real poor example to anyone looking to get into this game on a competitive level. Its such a shame this game couldnt play like a 2D VF4 where every character can compete and win.
It’s funny Rik, you’ll find the more balanced games tier wise, have less followship in term of fans than ones with clearly definied tiers.
Tekken has a great fanbase, so does 3s, CvS2, and Marvel, all of which have characters you’ll see pop up most of the time (in marvel and cvs2 some characters almost are a part of every single team).
There aren’t a lot of VF players, and while that game does have tiers, they really are a lot less well defined than other games, partly why it’s so impossible to get into, since you tend to have to have working knowledge of your opponents moveset as well as yours to be able to play them well, and while that’s true for most games, most games you only need to really know how a handful of characters play, because that’s mostly what you’ll face.
