NYPD has a very strong, “You’re with us or against us” type view of politicians. FDNY is probably the only organization nobody in office can or will even go against. Especially since 9/11. Who hates firefighters anyways?
So as mayor, the responsible thing for him to do is to publicly undermine the grunts whom he needs to uphold law and order?
The only thing your post tells me is that the US gets shitty leadership because its people expect shit leadership.
The great USA has become no better than Malaysia where the ruling party spends all its day playing racial demagogue for political reasons then acts all surprised when shit gets out of control.
I expect my politicians to be honest and to see the real world we’re living in, not the one he wants to push out there. After coming off of Giuliani’s tyranny, Bloomberg’s indifference to anyone not a billionaire, and Ray Kelly’s army-style police force, de Blasio has a goddamn duty to his family and to New Yorkers to let them know that if you’re a minority in New York shit is not going to be easy.
He should fire the lot of NYPD officers and start fresh. It’s not a permanent solution but a more stringent system is the best way to make sure those who deserve it get a shield and those who don’t get tossed to the side. After all, this is a position of trust that the public allows officers to have it’s not their God-given right to a badge and a gun.
See if he does this, then at least one could say that he’s exhibiting leadership and dealing with a problem that he honestly sees in best way he thinks he can.
Right now all I’m seeing is a cynical attempt to toe by the party line’s racial discourse.
He can’t just fire police. They have a union that, as the proof shows, reinstates cops who were at first seen unfit for duty in the first place. If it were that easy I’m sure he would have already done it.
Exactly. Don’t forget about those Puerto Rican kids that got choked out for playing football in the street, which is why chokeholds (like the one used to kill Garner) were banned in the first place.
I’m just lucky I was born light-skinned enough, tall enough, and smart enough to be ignored the the police about 99% of the time. I’m pretty sure that if I were anything as dark as my cousins back on the island I would’ve gotten a few billy clubs to the nuts by now.
Also, I can’t believe I Forgot about Anthony Baez. That shit was pretty much pushed to the background after Giuliani won, something I couldn’t believe at the age of 8.
My favorite part of Baez’s story is that the officer who killed him was able to snake out of every goddamn charge put on him until they charged him for civil rights violation and he had to serve time in a federal pen. Goddamn, it really is a wonder why minorities even come to this city.
Oh, the poor powerless mayor can’t deal with the big bad unions, so shit talking the police in public is the only thing he can do. Its a good thing he isn’t in charge of running the city, otherwise he’d have to take responsibility for its problems.
I used to listen to Black talk radio in the car everyday on the way to school with my grandmother, so I’m always more shocked by the shock people have when NYPD kills somebody for no reason than the actual events themselves.
So enslavement and rule is ok as long as people get something out of it?
I guess the spanish conquest of Hispanola was OK because they sure showed those cannablisitic soul sacrficing dark skinned nigga’s that shit wasn’t right. Gave them shit like the wheel and a real fear of God.
The british rule of South Africa also gave those “spear chuckers” democracy, civilization, and freedom from their “jungle shaman” juju with real medicine.
I guess the Dutch rule over west Africa also led to some real advantages for those folk to, like cities, books, and economic prosperity.
Way to open a can of totally unrelated worms man, was talking about India not the entirety of colonial history. The brits killed of slavery when they were there, any place they operated all that social pariah shit got kicked to the curb.
Let’s be real here. Politics is the art of pushing things that you want done and making excuses to explain why you haven’t done what you want people to think that you want done.
That’s why Obamacare got passed faster than it took people to read through it, and Gitmo still hasn’t been closed.
shit talking police is more than the nothing that almost everyone with a shred of influence is currently doing about it. im not really sure criticizing police is a mainstream enough idea for it to be considered towing the party line unless you’re talking about the black panther party. i wish being critical of police was something you might expect from a major party’s platform.
