Smash Bros. is not a “traditional fighter” and a game being a “non-traditional fighter” means “it’s not a fighting game at all” to SRK.
Which I find humorously agreeable.

Why are people so adamant about Smash not being a fighting game anyway? Does it really matter? Just let the people who actually wanna talk about Smash do so in the Smash threads and it’ll be better for everyone involved. But people wanna troll the Smash threads and then act like they’re being wronged whenever people say something back to them. News flash children: people like different things. This goes for both sides. Some people like to play Smash with all the items on and on random chaotic stages. That’s fine. Others like to play Smash with no items and on very few stages. That’s fine. Some folks don’t like to play Smash at all. That’s also fine. But for God’s sake let’s quit trolling each other. It’s grown rather tiresome.
But is it incorrect? You are able to choose to play on those settings if you wish.
SC:BW proleagues use standardized custom maps which will eventually be rotated out for new ones. Starcraft is more competitive than any fighting game and I don’t think Blizzard’s original intention was for it to be competitive. To many of you SRK junkies, customizing a game for it to become more competitive seems to be a foreign idea of some sort. I doubt they use every map for competitve CS, because some of them are just imbalanced. There are even mods such as Quakeworld and CPMA to make the games even more competitive. Please keep digging a deeper hole for yourself.
Short hopping, lasers, and edge guarding were all implemented into the game. In fact, you get “bonus points” for something known as “Edge Hogging” which is part of edge guarding. They teach you how to edge guard and edge hog in the tutorial. “Please keep digging a deeper hole for yourself.”
When the cool kids feel some way, you have to follow. Who wants to be a square?
Fuck what anybody says. 98% of the “banned” stages are GARBAGE and fairly too interfering (same as items). Damn Nintendo! Why do you have to include so much customizations and options!!? Niggas can never stop bringing drama into threads. It’s the $RK (and only) way!
Every 6 months another one of these damn threads pop up and no progress is made. Vicious cycle I tell you.
I think most people would say it’s incorrect, because it goes against the standard play that’s presented at the start. 2 rounds, 99 time, etc. Smash at the start is four characters, TIME, items with every stage.
I’m not saying you can’t play smash competitively. You can play anything competitively. Pretty much any game played competitively is done to a point where it goes beyond the developers intentions. It’s just Smash has taken customization to a level where it’s funny. Your smashboards higher ups in a room have to constantly keep track of all these quote unquote gay metagames in order to keep everything in check. For people who play traditional fighters, who see ban = st akuma status, shit is hilarious. Sakurai tells you to stop taking Smash seriously, S-kill brags about his thor resets and Ono tells you that SF is a chess game. There’s a difference.
I’m pretty sure the edge hogging bonus applies when two people get knocked off and one person grabs it before the other guy. Casual Smash brothers.
You truly think it’s meant to acknowledge the strategy of camping the edge? If so, then you’re simplifying what edge guarding really is, no? They only taught spiking in the tutorial, btw.
Imo its more about making something worse so a group of people will not touch it. But his team seems to think differently. Z/L-cancels were widely known in 64 and Melee. The team kept it in. But we all know Itagaki jr wants his opinion only. He said if it was up to him he would never make a system as complex as Melee’s and make it even simpler (how the fuck you get more simple than 1 button grabs and single buttons? idk) than ssbb. Shit does not go well when a creator takes those that intake his work as if they are in a vegetative state 24/7.
It probably goes as far back as to when that Nintendo Seal came into play. Nintendo likes things set a certain way and doesn’t welcome change in their products.
I have never been to a smash tournament and never will. I also never go on smashboards, so get these stupid assumptions out of your head. I only discovered “competitive smash” VIA youtube.
How is it incorrect? That is something called an opinion when you say it’s “standard play”. If you weren’t allowed to customize your rules then I would be more inclined to agree with you. I personally don’t like playing SF with 30 second rounds and high handicap, but if somebody does then it’s not incorrect. Lol @ Ono saying that SF is a chess game. Were they intentionally trying to make a competitive game when SF2:WW hit the arcades? MvC2 (my favorite fighting game) was originally supposed to cater to the casuals and be a shallow game. However, the PLAYERS turned it into a competitive fighting game. It doesn’t matter what the developers original intentions were, because it ends up in the hands of the players and they will do what they want with it. There is a good reason why they ban certain stages, because if Fox gets one kill then he can run the entire round and never get touched. Thus the game devolves into Fox vs. Fox. However, instead of banning a legitimate character they ban a bad stage. Crazy stages like Rainbow Cruise, Poke Floats, and Kongo Jungle 64, ext. are legal. SF never had a problem with stages, because they were always neutral. Take a game like CS 1.6 or SC:BW or SSBM where maps are important, then you have a problem when there is an imbalanced map. “Please keep digging a deeper hole for yourself.”
No, edge hogging bonus counts if you grab on to the edge before the other guy, regardless of positioning.
There are invincibility frames when grabbing on to the edge, so the players are merely abusing a mechanic already put in the system.
Spiking is basically one of the tools of edge guarding. You can either sit on your ass by the edge and swing marth’s sword all day, or you jump off the edge and intercept them. Those are both considered edge guarding. It’s merely a term that was created by the players, much like tri-jumps in MvC2.
Master Chibi, when you actually get good at fighting games you’ll realize how shitty Smash is. Play a REAL fighter. Play a MAN’S game.
Play Tekken.
lol @ the notion of a MAN’S game. If we were gonna play a MAN’S game we would go play rugby or Russian roulette. This is video games son, we play while sitting on our asses pushing buttons.
Tekken is the closest to a Man’s game a videogame can get.
Why, exactly? Because there are juggle combos? Get real. If you wanna play a REAL, competitive, balanced fighter, play Vampire Savior. But don’t give me this MAN’s game bullshit.
I love me some Tekken. But I can’t really because I cannot like more than type of game. Otherwise people look at me like a Samaritan Leper. :xeye:
Shoutouts to Garou though.
If a game requires this much banned content to be competitive it isn’t competitive in the first place. A good example is David Sirlin saying that good competitive games are designed so that certain things don’t need to be banned like this, and yet here it is.
I’ve seen Master Chibi play CvS2. All I have to say is play CvS2, and come back and tell me if it is scrub friendly.
Shaq Fu may be bad but it is still a damn Fighting game.
But yea Smash I would consider a fighter sure. May not be that competitive but still is.
Also yea Melee craze was BIG when it was competitive. I think the first year of EVO.
Smash had the most people there. If they make the game competitive. People will easily follow.
No worries SRK has got some people that don’t hate it as much lol.
lol @ Tekken being a “man’s game.”
Nigga… *Dong Dong Never Die *is a man’s game.
Look man. Tekken is just one of those games that exudes an aura of manliness. It’s the Clint Eastwood of fighters. Smash is more like Richard Simmons compared to manly ass Tekken.
from my experience as a tournament organizer, the smash community is a pain in the ass, except for some cats that im friend with, the rest is full of toddlers, and man childs that i preffer to avoid tbh
Melee never really reached that point.
Brawl has though. They had to put a limit on how many times you can grab the ledge.
I heard one of the dumbest stories in my life concerning this topic. It involved a tv, some bitchassness, and a solution that was easy as fuck. Genesis 2 is gonna be hype this year. Mango better come back serious with the heat this time. PPMD is gunning for him.
In other news (on topic news tbh) if this new game has Roy and melee’s speed then I’ma scream louder thn this.
