as for the shit talking, i don’t think anybody new was shit talked because as far as i could tell, it stays within people who know each other. i don’t think anybody was talking shit to someone they didn’t already know and to me, that’s fine. it doesn’t bother me what outside people think of our community because the fact is, if i see 50 people yelling and screaming over something, i’m probably gonna go check it out to see what the fuss is about. if you’re in an arcade when a bunch of craziness is going down, you’re gonna check it out. if they’re remotely interested in street fighter, i think all the yelling will spark some interest, if they’re not, then they wouldn’t have cared one way or the other.
that said, if anybody was yelling at someone who was new and didn’t know anybody, i think we would have all stepped in and told them to relax.
Gotta say I agree with Viscant, even though my opinion here probably isn’t of any concern to you guys. I’m Tatsu’s older brother, I go with him once in a while and have talked to a few of you at AI, and I’m relatively new to this whole fighting game thing.
There’s a fine line between getting “hype” and being disrespectful. Despite being the funny guy Sanchez is I have seen him also yell random shit at people during casual play too. He has irked guys like Paul and Eric, who don’t go on SRK or know many of you guys personally. I’m sure Sanchez was only trying to give tips and help improve people’s game or inspire them, but that’s not the right way to do it.
Also, during tournaments and such, cheering for your friend is one thing, but being rude and yelling obscene shit at the other guy is out of line. But anyways, like Viscant said…there’s no real way to put rules on this kinda stuff so I can only ask that you think about how the new guys like me looking in from the outside would feel about this community when seeing stuff like that.
I only have one real request though. Some of you motherfuckers need to be considerate and not stand in between the machines when you’re giving tips to your friend or whatever. A lot of times people already have a hard enough time trying to watch the match, so just stand to the left or ride; that’s what I do. And please at least put in an effort to not just rudely move in and stand in front of a guy who’s watching the match. I see this shit happen all the time and amazes me how some of you just blatantly pull a stool up and position it right in front of some kid watching from the back row.

My biggest issue with the shit-talking discussion is why no one brought this up at the tournament. We interact with each other constantly; usually not all at once. If this was to be discussed at any time, it should have been then. Being the rational people that we are, we probably would have settled the issue and dropped it, then we’d laugh and eat tacos.
I think people are respectful enough that they keep the shit-talking game related. It’s often just cliche stuff we’ve all laughed at during Marvel videos and whatnot. As long as we keep it at that, I’m sure it’s not gonna lead to anyone throwing down in the parking lot.
Also, I call bullshit on driving new people out. Perfect example being this dude Tim, who’s been coming to AI on and off for the last week or so. He was at this tournament as a spectator, and from what I can tell and from what he told me, he had a great time and wanted to get in on the action. Feel free to argue my point, but I feel that the hype around these tournaments brings more people in than it drives out.
Yeah, I’m pretty new to the scene and who cares what I think, but that’s my two cents.
A friend of mine who came yesterday and was new to the scene and the AI crew felt the same way. This is the only time I’ve heard anyone claim anybody getting shit talked or yelled at in a socal tournament who was a newcomer, and totally contrary to what I’ve seen in the past.
