aight so admittedly this is a stooooopid question but why is it that with some charge characters directions dont matter that much, but with others they matter a lot. i.e. when i’m using honda i can’t do the headbutt by charging db, then df + punch, but charging ub, then uf + punch works fine. the opposite of this situtation is balrog / boxer. his ultra can be done by charging any back direction, like db, then df, db, df + PPP/KKK
ok im going to start enrage right now…
im so pissed off man, HOW do i block ?!?!?!?
everytime i press my fking stick to the back or dowback to block an incoming attack i still get hit ?! how is this possible? i start an attack and it gets blocked every time lol hes jumping at me i do an s.mk or s.hk i dont hit, but he does, then i downback block the shit and he jumps over my head and kicks me and i cant block ?! i need srs help
What do you guys do when you get dizzy? I always just let go of the stick, especially since most of the time the opp uses a lvl 3 FA and there’s not much I can do anyways. Do u just smother your palm over the buttons or piano everything? lol
you are trying to describe one of two things. the first thing it could be is that you’re blocking at the wrong height. overhead attacks need to be blocked standing, or else it will hit. low attacks need to be blocked low or they will hit. regular attacks can be blocked low or standing. the second thing you could be describing is a cross up. some attacks can hit behind you, meaning you have to block the other way. this was originally a glitch in the old games, but is now a part of the SF series. a good example is ryu’s jumping kick. he has 3 jumping kicks, short (light), forward (medium), and roundhouse (hard). roundhouse and forward have the same animation, but different hitboxes. if you get the spacing just right, jumping forward kick can hit behind ryu, hitting the back of the opponents head. if you try this with jumping roundhouse, it wont work, because the hitbox doesnt hit in the same areas as the forward kick, even though it has the same animation. jumping short can cross up as well, esp in the corner. you can tell a move crossed you up because you will see the little “explosion” hit animation on the other side of your body. in these situations you need to block in the direction opposite to waht you would think. i.e if you’re on 2p side and he came from 1p side, hold left on the joystick to block.
Question here regarding choosing a character. I main Balrog and I know him well enough in the sense that I know his block strings, hit confirm into combos, anti airs and when to save meter for super vs using ex moves. My question then is, I am looking to switch to a different character but I noticed that my ground game with all the other characters is pretty much… garbage. I was wondering which character is most like 'Rog because I need a switch thanks in advance.
Oh I love this thread. BlazBlue has gotten me interested in becoming better at fighting games more than SF4 did, but this here answered a lot of my questions about terminology for both. I may have to put SF4 back in and fire it up…
So, I apologize if this is not the place for it, but I have an arcade stick question. I just got a Hori Real Arcade Pro a couple weeks ago (my first stick) and I’ve been having trouble with the direction inputs. Like, if I try to do df, I might get d, df or f,f will come out as f,df,f. Basically, the diagonals are sneaking into my straight inputs and vice versa. Does anyone have any advice as to what to practice to fix this? When I try to do just a double qcf ultra in training mode with the input display on, practically the whole screen fills up with my inputs. It’s driving me crazy!
I’ve got a newbie question…
Foot games… I can do them… Until I find someone who’s good at spacing, They stay just outside my poke range. And I always seem to lose with the pokes…
I seriously don’t know how to do this How do they do it and how do i respond to it?
Uhh… I mean once I get just outside someone’s poke range I have no idea how to press that advantage… (and i’m not that good at getting to that position either)
And when someone else is just outside my poke range. I don’t know how to fight this…
Basically I suck at spacing… and Spacing battles…
I want to know ways to find and control the point you need, how to use it. and how do these foot games work? Is it just all mind games and luck? Or is there some trick to doing it? something to watch out for? certain patterns?
I know Baiting is a part of it. but it seems impossible to react when people fall for a whiff…
Do you just predict it? or do I just need more practice and need to improve my reaction?
(and obviously If i predict wrong I get punished)
It’s hard for other people to make this assessment for you, since it depends on what you really feel is essential to how you play Balrog. But if I had to take a shot at it, I would say Honda, then maybe Blanka.
You can try weaving in and out of your opponent’s poke range to bait them into whiffing something, and then punish their whiff.
All of that is really just a matter of practice and getting accustomed to the properties of each character’s normals. There really isn’t any trick it’s just all about knowing what you and your character are capable of. Some of it is prediciting, some is reaction, some is luck and taking advantage of it. But it’s practice that’ll make you better.
I am down at the bottom…

Holy Crap! That’s a ton of information. I just played the game for the first time last night. Looks like I have some reading to do!
Would be really nice if you could add this section to the OP. Very helpful
I strongly second the above. That was probably the first time I really understood option select.
i love how my skype registers 1-800-help-a-nub as a real phone number
hey guys, newbie here
I’m having a hard time trying to connect hits in Gief last trial in Hard mode and also Elf Trial 4 in Hard as well. For Zangief, I thought that by enabling the turbo option in SE would make it through, but this thing is driving me nuts T_T. Elf is same scenario, cannot link hits properly.
- Is there a way to know when exactly to press button?
- Is there a delay between pressing button and actually performing the action?
Not quite sure if this is related to LCD, but I have a Samsung L32A550.
Thanks in advance
sry double post

i did a search but i cant find anything on help with tech throws. when im on blanka i like to mix my game up and corss them up hop/back fourth and confuse them, but people always manage to know when im about to throw. however, when im blocking a combo link, i can never anticipate a throw in between the hits. is there anything i can do to watch out for this? i at least want to tech it.
i have a question about frame data when empty jumping. Does anyone know the landing recovery on forward, backward, and neutral jumping?
