The news media is wrong all the time- it’s just that you never really realize how wrong they are until they do a story about you. On the same note: back before people were trying to blame random shootings on violent video games, they were blaming violence on Dungeons and Dragons and heavy metal, and other things the people reporting these stories were 20 years too old to actually know or care anything about. And, of course, it makes sense that if you are into something as a hobby or career etc, you wouldn’t want to have it slandered with these kinds of accusations.
The difference is that 99.999% of people who watch The Matrix or play Doom aren’t going to kill anyone, and rarely do D&D players murder children and sacrifice them to Satan. Under any inspection, the claims don’t really hold up.
But all kinds of gamergate threads etc are thick with misogynistic nonsense. Whether it comes from people who are being genuine, people who are trolling, or people who think that they’re trolling but are actually tipping their hand. Even with a cursory knowledge of the whole thing, I know that “actually, it’s about ethics in gaming journalism” literally became a punchline. People are accused of immaturity and sexism, and are then so easily baited into responding with immature sexism without even realizing it, that it’s hard to take gamergate seriously- even if there are legit grievances with Sarkeesian, Quinn et al.
If it makes anyone feel better. We had great games developed by women. Anyone remember Roberta Williams of the King’s Quest saga in the 1980s? What about the Think Quick! game?
