Zangief Video Thread

Hey yall, I’ve started uploading replays to my YT channel; all Gief playlists sorted by matchup. I’m starting with our problem matchups, so the first round of vids will be Nash, Chun, Dhalsim and Birdie.

Chief, you had a youtube channel? Well I’ll be damned! Pretty Cool!!!

As part of the learning curve, I’ve started adding to favourites all the world’s best giefs, to study what they do.

Not many gief’s in the top 700.

Can anyone name any good giefs? Who’s game I should be analyzing.

zangitan, itazan, brickSWE, tobari, dragoneyez

There’s others I found while looking for vids to upload but I can’t remember atm. I’ll be consistently uploading though, so keep an eye on my channel.

BrickSWE is supposedly a ragequitter.

I’m not uploading matches to showcase any individual person; I’m uploading them so that Gief players can see what other Gief players are doing in certain matchups. If he’s playing well against a good opponent, I couldn’t care less if he RQ’s or not.

Well if he’s a RQ’ing cunt then he certainly doesn’t deserve any attention.

Definitely agree with this.

Starting to upload Chun-Li matches. Should have 5 vids (10 matches) up by today. Was going to do Dhalsim next; any suggestions for what matchup I should upload next.

Thanks Chief for your work on this. Let me be greedy and ask for a few Vega videos next if you can find them. It is my worst matchup embarrassingly.

I probably will do Vega next. Dhalsim is likely a harder matchup, but I’m assuming ppl run into Vega more often.

Here are some vids from me playing this weekend. In case anyone finds anything interesting, or even a good example of what NOT to do, I figured I’d post them all here. Hadn’t played in a week and was rusty, but in some ways it helped me as I played better than I have in ages.

tech - air spd is nice if you find you are about to jump into one of Laura’s fireballs.

Rich I watched those four videos and thought you were fishing for the air spd too much. In the end it didn’t matter much here but there was a time or two where you were punished for it. In the Ken matchup he was jumping back and forth and I knew that you had the read on it but seemed to be trying to hit the air spd. I would have slowed down and just cr.hp him with such a solid read there. How about a little bit more meaty headbutt on their wakeup too? It is a great way to keep up the pressure and force bad decisions. On bodysplash you can add c.lp, s.lk xx lariat rather than going just to lariat. This makes it a bit safer just in case of a block.

AlxL that was awesome. Great job staying composed at the end. I bet your heart was beating out of your chest.

on body splash do cr mp, if blocked do another cr mp or do spd. if hit do st lk larriat. gotta get that white life damage when you can.

Got it filldoh, thanks! You’re absolutely right.

haahahahah you bet it! It really was! I even stopped for a moment after the game, to come back to my self LOL, while rewatching the last round…
Thanks!

First matches against Alex.

I played another set with a silver player with the same results. People are obviously very green with Alex but this match feels very slow with Alex’s ultra heavy attacks.

Hey Guys
im just here looking for some critique, trying to level up my Geif in anyways possible cuz im not dropping him no matter how bad he is

Tell me what i need to improve on

@TheSupaSage I’m not sure I have anything to really add on the FANG fights. Everything I thought to tell you to do, it seemed like you figured out towards the end anyway. Though I suppose they might be worth discussing anyway.

So here’s the thing with FANG: at footsie range I feel like if he’s still tossing poison balls, that’s your cue to just dash up and throw him whenever you feel like it. Other characters might worry about the balls falling on their head if they try to start some offense, but they don’t matter once a throw animation gets going, heh. At longer ranges, make sure you’re moving forward. You’d block or vskill a lot of the balls and then just kinda sit there. Walk or dash forward.

Which brings me to the other thing about FANG, especially online. I know they love to randomly do that dash punch at mid range, which might have been a part of your hesitation. You need to be wary of it, but its definitely something you can alleviate by just v skilling randomly. If he hits your armor, he’s yours. Just be sure not try v skilling in that situation if balls are also falling in your head. At that point, if you can’t get out from under the balls, just block, and keep an eye out for his command dash.

As for the birdie fight, you seemed to handle yourself pretty darn well there, so my only big thing is to suggest watching out for his leaping grab a bit more actively. The non-ex version is totally reactable with a jump, especially if you keep it in the back of your mind all the time. Heck even the EX version is reactable if you’re really on point, though I could forgive you for getting hit by it.

You did this a couple times so you’re probably aware, but the chain is actually armorable, despite seeming like a hit-grab that would beat armor, so some random v skills at mid range is kinda warranted against birdie too. V skilling it gives you ample time to move in on him.

Something else that’s armorable is the banana peel and the soda can. Good way to move through them without having to jump or block. Granted I’m sure he can blow that up if he expects it, but as a gief player you should already be familiar with keeping things random and fresh and using moves and approaches sparingly. Just mix it in, I guess.

Also oh boy that salty ragequit, lol.

Super gold Laura first to five set.

Any thoughts? Tips? I can’t help but to jab my way to victory. I did end up figuring out that she wants to jump on 90% of the resets and v reversals.
