Zangief Strategy/Match-up Thread

AE stuff S mp kills yun and yang. Evil ryu his cmk is really good and he hits like a truck but not that bad of a matchup I would say 6-4 in evil ryu’s favor right now because he’s a good zoner. The match is not nearly as bad as akuma but worse than ryu. His low life is nice for gief.

Can anyone break the vega(claw) matchup down and tell me how this is suposed to be in zangief´s favor? Take out of the equation the classic “kd him and win” that people that never play against vega tend to say. His pokes against gief are amazing amongst other things…I´m just totally lost on this matchup atm.

It’s not that much in zangief’s favor but some tips to use are gief c.lp beats all of claws pokes from far out including his slide and s.mp beats most of them from close up, the c.lp to bully him backwards while preventing him from harassing you from where he is too far for you to threaten with jump-ins or s.mp. Other useful pokes i find in this match are s.lk for whiff punishes only and s.mk because it lingers.

The jump back FP from him on your wakeup you can block and punish with ex GH before he lands to get yourself a knockdown. The throw loop he does from the walldive the only ways i found to beat it are early lariat, jump back/forward body splash, ex gh to get out of the way, or U2. It’s annoying though because he can do things other than throw and you cant duck or jump out of it.

Knock him down and win is pretty accurate though becaue not only do his getup options suck but his clothes fly off even if he blocks stuff.

Would someone with solid solid Sakura experience mind telling me how this is a 7-3 matchup?

Not until recently have I played some good sakuras offline and I’m pretty lost. OS pokes seem to always trade with her buttons and there is almost virtually no chance of a surprise jump between cr.hp or dp. Plus if you do get a KD its hard to play wake up games because u2 beats x-ups. Its safe jumpable, but like the timing of the safe jump you can see a mile away and she’ll probably hold it.

Overall the approach on the ground seems tough because her zoning buttons recover quickly and at range so its hard to whiff punish. And the cr. mk OS dp has hella range.

what am i missing?

Counter pokes

it’s not a 7/3, 6/4 for gief imo but no more than that. 7/3s in this game are almost imposible matchups.

vs sakura is 6:4 in vanilla, 5-5 in super
and in AE, i can say it’s in sakura’s favour.

vs Sakura was 7-3 in vanilla 6-4 in super!

Why?

You know at this point I’d just love a updated match breakdown. Hell with the MU odds. lol

Gone are the days of the Gief dive kick, GDLK lariat, GH KD and 3 frame cr. short. So I really wonder how this is still in Giefs favor. I think its even but I do admit Sakura is one of my demons in this game…

Uryo vs Zangitan…sure Uryo gets away with some stuff at first…but I think its mostly to do with Zangitan’s unfamiliarity with the match up

Hi, I need help with Gief x Chun-li in SSF4.

My biggest problem is with her neutral jump HK, that move beat Lariat and when I try to jump against this (with Headbutt or other attack) I lose in air to air due her priority.

Yesterday I was trying to use Gief’s far s.hk (the result is usually a trade) and his c.mp (sometimes I beat the j.hk and others she beat it clean)

Am I missing the time to anti air ? There’s any “magical” move that I’m forgeting? Any sugestion?

P.S: Sorry for my bad english.

Cr.mp is the right tool for it, yes. It gets the deal done if only your are not out of range or she is doing it close to the ground. Ex GH is a possibility also, though i always keep reminding myself of that and never react with it to such annoying neutral jumps like Chuns and Ehonda’s.

Thank You, I will give it a try !

people. i need some helps and tips against solid Deejay Player. once he finds that range, it’s very hard to get in. He can sonic boom, slide, s.hp anti air, s.mp anti air, his mobility is quick enough to zone and control spaces… Play against Da Knut Forever and you’ll see.

You can reaction ex GH his booms. Late knees stuffs slide completely. Just look out for dread kicks and you should be ok. I pit some deejay videos up on the AE Gief thread.

Good Dee Jay’s aren’t gonna slide unless you lariat. I would know because slide is like -4 or -6.

You’ve got to walk him down. He’s not getting out of the corners once you have him there. Don’t try any cross up shenanigans unless you wanna be upkicked. Dee Jay has a short, floaty jump so if he tries a corner escape you can stuff it with Lariat.

Dee Jay’s far st. mp and far st. hp will anti air you every time you try to jump over a Max Out. If he has U2 then all is lost, that’s 500 damage right there.

But really just walk, block, walk, EX Hand, walk until he’s in the corner. all Dread Kicks are SPD punishable at the right range.

I just came home from a six and a half hour crack session at the arcade, facing Yuns almost eight times out of ten lol. I feel like I have a pretty good handle on the match up now, I can do a write up if anyone is interested.

yea do a write up pls thx

Please do, I got raped 0-10 last night.
